Synopsis
Inherpursuitofsavingenoughmoneytoreturnhome,Hannahfoundherselfplayingtheroleofthe“first-love”characterinabelovednovel.Originally,thischaracterwasatypicalstand-insupportingactress,takingonvarioussubstitutesforthefemaleleadasdictatedbythemaleprotagonists,suchasdonatingkidneysorsparingroadforthefemalelead,whichsheallagreed.Eventually,theoriginalcharactersuccumbedtothepressure,turningdarkandmeetingatragicdemisewithadisfiguredfaceonthestreetsafterbeingkilledbythemaleprotagonists.Hannah'staskwastofollowthisgrimplotlineandachievethetragicstory'sintendedoutcome.However,intheeyesofGeorgeRiver,shewasmerelyasubstitutehehadenlisted—anentitydependentonhim.Whenhistruelovereturned,hecallouslyabandonedthewomanwhodeeplylovedhim.Later,heregrettedhisdecision,onlytodiscoverthattheonce-beggingwomanwasnowsurroundedbyvariousexceptionalmen.Theindividualswhohadpreviouslyusedherasashield—themovieking,theambitiousyoungactorwhoclimbedoverherforhisidealgoddess,andthepresidentwhoregrettedhisactionsuponregaininghismemory—allfoundthemselveshumblypleadingforheraffection:“Hannah,theoneIloveisyou.”Confusedbythesuddenturnofevents,Hannahobservedherbankaccountsteadilygrowingandstumbleduponanewfoundskillforcraftingtragicstories.Asthemainantagonistwhosuccessfullysurviveduntiltheendofthestory,ArnoldSimmonswasruthless,dark,andviolent.Inhiseyes,Hannahappearedtobethemostnaivewomanhehadeverencountered,herthoughtsconsumedsolelybylove.Witnessinghercontinuousdeceptionbythosearoundher,Arnoldeventuallyreachedabreakingpointandseizedher,declaring,“Staybymyside;letmehandleyourtasks.”Aseeminglyfragileflowerwithaninnerstrength,DaughteroftheSea,crossespathswithanobsessed,dark,andsinisterantagonistwhocontemplatesdisruptingthepondofbredfisheveryday.
