The director wasn’t actually sick, just didn’t want to go back and face Tiffany Lynch, for fear of losing his temper and insulting her, which would ultimately offend Jimmy Simmons.
Another reason was that the scene where Tiffany physically attacked soone was just too violent. After giving it so thought, the director figured he wouldn’t last a single move against her before hitting the ground.
After all, he was getting on in years and was no match for her.
He might as well take a leave of absence and let the assistant director take over.

It didn’t matter who was behind it, whether they had taken money or acted out of extre personal feelings, there was no negotiating a lawsuit from them.
