Chapter 47: Killing the Chicken to Warn the Monkeys
The passing maids all understood what was happening, but to avoid unnecessary anger being directed at them, they did not dare even whisper a word. They only watched from afar as spectators.
Anyone foolish enough to interfere was simply tired of living.
So they all chose to mind their own business and leave as quickly as possible.
anwhile, the maid Xiao Fei, who had been gossiping behind Vivian’s back, fell into despair.
“What were you chatting about? Tell ,” Vivian said with a smile that was not a smile. Small in stature, yet her presence was overwhelming.
Xiao Fei lowered her head, her voice trembling. “Young Miss… I know I was wrong… please, please don’t…”
“Wrong?” Vivian let out a light laugh. She tucked a strand of red hair behind her ear, and the curve of her brows revealed how pleased she currently was. “You seed to be chatting quite happily. What did you do wrong?”
“I… I shouldn’t have…”
Before she could explain, Vivian softly interrupted her. “Must I raise my head to speak with you?”
Thump.
Xiao Fei reacted instantly and dropped to her knees, striking the stone pavent hard enough to make her grimace in pain. “Young Miss… I shouldn’t…”
SLAP!
A crisp sound rang out.
Xiao Fei was struck into a daze. The pain made her instinctively cover her face. “I’m sorry, Young Miss! I know I was wrong! I know—ah!”
SLAP!
It was useless. Vivian did not listen at all. In a gentle voice, she softly coaxed, “Take your hand away, please. Do not block your face.”
When the trembling girl failed to obey, Vivian’s expression instantly turned fierce, and she barked sharply, “Move your hand!”
SLAP! SLAP! SLAP...
She struck left and right, leaving vivid red handprints on both cheeks. Only when her palm began to sting did Vivian finally stop.
But Xiao Fei could no longer beg for rcy. The mont the blows ceased, she collapsed to the ground, blood seeping from the corner of her mouth onto the cold stone floor.
The next instant, the shoe encasing Vivian’s delicate foot ca down hard onto Xiao Fei’s head.
“Urgh…!”
The force was so great that a dull thud could be heard, along with an unconscious choking sound. The maid who had first raised the topic stood nearby, too terrified to move.
eting the vacant eyes of the girl on the ground, she shuddered violently, her legs nearly giving out.
“I feed you, clothe you, house you, and free you from the miserable lives you once had outside. And this is how you repay ? Hmm?”
Thinking about being gossiped about by servants—and even overhearing it herself—only made Vivian’s anger burn hotter. The pressure of her stomping increased.
“Urgh…!”
“Urgh…”
“.........”
Several tis in succession. Each stomp was accompanied by a dull impact and a pained groan, every step the dignity of the lower class crushed beneath the authority of the upper.
At last, Vivian withdrew her foot. The maid had already fainted and no longer moved, her hair disheveled as a thin line of blood seeped from the back of her head.
Vivian wiped the sole of her shoe on the maid’s clothing in disgust. Her voice returned sowhat to calm.
“Drag her away.”
The surviving maid nodded repeatedly, thankful she had not spoken too much.
A few minutes later, the news reached the Head Maid, who imdiately notified several guards. They cleaned up the grisly scene and carried the girl to the infirmary.
Afterward, Vivian walked up the steps with a mocking expression. As her petite figure rose higher, she reached the topmost step.
Arms folded, she looked down at all the passing maids and declared sternly,
“Do not think that because you can stay here with food and clothing provided, you may beco unruly. Rember this—your lives are given by !”
“You may gossip behind my back, but if I hear it again, next ti I will break your limbs and throw you out!”
Hearing such a terrifying fate, the young maids trembled uncontrollably. They wondered what beliefs had been instilled into this noble young lady to make her so cruel…
But such was the era. Power lay mostly in the hands of capital. Would the Church intervene? It would, if it were an ordinary dispute among commoners—they would be imprisoned.
However, if a noble of high status killed a commoner, such matters had long beco commonplace. The Church would not offend nobility over such a “small matter.”
Life was often not as valuable as one imagined.
...
While the others were still shaken, a white-haired maid who had arrived upon hearing the commotion stood in a corner without revealing herself. She lightly rested the parasol on her shoulder, having witnessed the entire scene. Her gaze remained calm as water.
Thinking back, when Vivian had tried to kill her before, it probably had not been a joke. Her thods were decisive—clearly not her first ti doing such a thing.
That said, if the force was small, flat shoes made it difficult to kill soone. Perhaps next ti she should try high heels?
“Eve!”
A sudden sharp call made the dispersing maids glance back again, though only for a mont.
After searching with her gaze, Vivian locked onto the figure in the corner. The difference was obvious—it was not hard to find. She simply had not noticed earlier in her rage.
“Ah… I’ve been discovered,” the nad maid tilted her head, not moving imdiately.
Vivian raised a brow and lifted her hand, pointing like the Desolate Heaven Imprisoning Finger. “Co here!”
The target in her sight did not move.
“Can you not understand?! I said co here!”
Eve still did not budge. She was wondering what would happen if she teased her a little.
As expected, Vivian imdiately flared up again, her face flushing red as she shouted toward the sparse onlookers, “What are you all staring at?! Go do your work!”
As soon as she finished speaking, she marched toward Eve in a hurry—very urgent, eager to reach her at once.
Yet just as she arrived, Vivian slipped on sothing, losing her balance and lunging straight toward the white-haired maid’s skirt-covered thigh.
What a humiliating display…
She was caught in ti and did not end up face-planting into the grass. Imdiately after regaining her footing, she turned around and kicked the culprit flying away.
Why were there rubber ducks everywhere…?
“Who threw trash here?” Vivian complained with a frown. Turning back to the white-haired maid, she put her hands on her hips and continued complaining, “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?! You wanted to embarrass , didn’t you?! Believe it or not, I will give you the sa fate as that one earlier!”
Her chest rose and fell violently—she was clearly furious. “Speak! Stop pretending to be mute!”
Eve lowered her eyes, looking at the red-haired girl who was shorter than herself yet brimming with aggression.
“Young Miss, your outfit today looks very nice.”
