Chapter 693: Chapter 38: Heart for Heart

Lair felt uneasy walking through the dense fog.

He was on his way to the gathering point, guided by the Envoy of the Contract Land. Although he had ntally prepared himself before coming, he still overestimated his endurance. He always felt that the shapes in the fog were from his hotown, so every ti he passed a new village, he felt nervous, only to feel relieved when he discovered it wasn’t his ho, which then turned to lancholy.

This experience tornted him repeatedly, pushing him to his limits and prompting him to do sothing to distract himself.

So he naturally turned his attention to the Envoy leading the way ahead.

“Hey, brother.” Lair strode forward, walking alongside the serious Envoy, “How much longer do we have to walk?”

The Envoy replied blandly, “We’re almost there.”

What does ‘almost there’ an?

It’s just the two of us; can’t you be a bit clearer?

Lair was displeased, but he didn’t show it, fearing that the Envoy would ignore him if he did.

So he asked again, “Bro, is it really you?”

The Envoy glanced at him, seemingly thinking him a fool.

“Hmm, you should be the real one. Your eyes are different from your master’s.” Lair made a judgnt, “His eyes are more, um… Is he a woman?”

“Don’t ask what shouldn’t be asked.”

“How would I know what shouldn’t be asked if I don’t ask?” Lair said, “If I ask sothing taboo, just tell , and I’ll know.”

The Envoy ignored Lair.

But Lair, being a Black rchant, had thick skin, so he continued to try to be friendly, “I think we probably have a lot of topics to chat about, right? After all, we’re the sa kind of people, like those pupp— I an, agents, right? There can’t be many of those jobs around.”

“I’m different from you.”

“What’s different?”

“I won’t betray my master,” the Envoy said blandly, “but you will.”

“Hey, look at what you’re saying. How could I betray Visa… my whoever.” Lair almost let Visas’s na slip out but quickly corrected himself. He carefully observed the Envoy and, seeing no sign of suspicion, sighed in relief and continued, “Besides, my relationship with that gentleman is different from yours. Mine is a cooperative relationship, but you and the lady above you are in a master-servant relationship… Hmm, it seems we’re indeed slightly different, but not by much.”

The Envoy initially didn’t want to deal with Lair, figuring since this guy was just a Puppet, there was nothing to pay attention to.

But at this mont, Diana’s voice sounded in his mind.

“Talk to him; find out who he truly is, why he’s willing to work for ‘Tongue,’ and make it natural. Don’t reveal that I’m instructing you.”

Receiving the instruction, the Envoy’s expression didn’t change. He just subtly nodded, “Perhaps.”

This was in response to Lair’s previous words.

“Right, right, you finally admitted it.” Lair smiled at the Envoy, “Then we can definitely find so common topics to discuss.”

“Sure.” The Envoy nodded, “Let start by asking, who are you really?”

“That’s a bit too direct.”

“I don’t sugarcoat things.”

“Fine, I don’t like beating around the bush either.” Lair threw out his fake na, “I’m called Lairs, and my real identity… well, I’m a Black rchant.”

Using a real profession makes the half-truths more confusing.

“Alright, I’m Carter,” the Envoy said, “a Guardian of the Contract Land.”

“Hey, hey, hey, you said that, not . That’s not what I wanted to ask.” Lair said, “Who doesn’t already know you’re a Guardian of the Contract Land? Saying that is as aningless as saying you’re a man. You should at least answer the questions I ask.”

Carter’s brow slightly furrowed, but after considering, he realized Lair had a point, so he nodded, “Okay, that doesn’t count, you can ask directly.”

While Carter was speaking, Lair was observing his expressions the whole ti.

By now, with such prolonged exposure, he had gained so understanding of Carter.

Simply put, Lair felt Carter’s mind seed off, not very sharp.

More accurately, Carter didn’t seem like a normal person, more like a Puppet with so independent thought capabilities and little emotion.

But this needed confirmation, so Lair asked, “Do you have any hobbies?”

“Hobbies?”

“Yes, like things you like doing when not working for your master.”

“No.”

“No?”

“Yes, none,” Carter said, “I exist for my master, so there’s no need for aningless activities, nor do I have things I like doing.”

“What do you do when not working for your master?”

“Rest,” Carter said calmly, “to better serve my master.”

Lair was stunned.

Is this so sort of chosen servant? No wonder his master says he’s more loyal than I am. At least he thinks he’s more loyal to Lord Visas than I am.

“Now it’s my turn to ask,” Carter said, “why do you work for Tongue?”

“For money, of course,” Lair replied matter-of-factly.

“Just for the money?”

“What do you an just for?” Lair was slightly displeased and continued half-truthfully, “It’s a lot of money.”

Lair’s voice and deanor naturally echoed in Diana’s mind from far away.
