Gio brought the case closer to himself and looked at the ampules within.

’Condensing Genetic Power isn’t a very useful thing in most cases, but it was revolutionary for Healers. It allowed them to stay further back on the battlefield and create healing serums instead of being on the battlefield directly healing people. To think that the first instance of it happened here...’

He didn’t even know. This was sothing the Old Lady developed in the past as well, but he never returned to Gastle after he went to the mine site. He wasn’t able to find a way back before "that event" happened.

The developnt of this technique in the future ca as a byproduct of other research being done. It was one of the smaller advancents of humanity, but one that played its own part nonetheless.

’When Aunt died, did this research die with her? Was the developnt of this technique delayed specifically because of her death?’

Was the destruction of Gastle really a random event?

Gio shook off his thoughts and returned to the present.

It wasn’t easy to create sothing like this. Each serum took great effort to make and the exhaustion that ca along with the process wasn’t easy to deal with.

Future healers had other thods to help them cope with the stress, but the Old Lady had none of that now.

She dealt with that exhaustion with her mind alone purely because she wanted him to stay safe.

Gio looked at the Old Lady.

"This...thank you."

He wasn’t able to say anything else. How many hours of research did she put into this?

Really, she did all that just for him?

’I was never really able to consider her a mother.’

Yet, even though the current him was older than her, he couldn’t help but beco a child in front of her.

The reason he could never truly accept her...

He learned it much later in life.

And it was sothing that still affected him to this day.

It still made it hard for him to consider her as a true mother, but in his heart, she was the closest thing he had to one.

When she did things like this, it was hard for him to keep the word from coming out of his throat.

Yet, no matter how far it got, no matter how far he allowed it to go, it would never get past the tip of his tongue.

’One day...’

One day, he wanted to show her how much he appreciated her role in his life by calling her the sa title she had been wanting to hear for so long.

But that day was not today.

Gio closed the case and stood up. He walked over to the Old Lady and gave her a proper hug.

Perhaps he couldn’t say that word, but he could show it in ways that were impossible for the old him.

The Old Lady’s eyes widened when he embraced her.

It was yet another change that she couldn’t understand, but...

She smiled lightly.

’Well, I can accept this one without too much of a fuss.’

She patted him on the shoulder, hiding her smile as she chided him.

"Alright. I’m sure you have a lot of packing to do, so get out of here. It’s getting late as well."

"Got it. I’ll co see you again to say bye before I leave. Thanks again for this."

Gio grinned as he gave his farewells and ran out the door with the case.

She hid it as well as she could, but he could see her lips twitching.

Evidently, she didn’t want to celebrate this mont until he was too far away to see or hear her doing so.

She still had her pride, after all.

It happened as Gio expected. Around five minutes after he walked out the door, her celebrations began.

But, that was sothing for her to enjoy alone.

Gio happily took his new lifesavers ho and made a spot for them on his utility belt.

’Now then, it’s Nightreign and then rest.’

He didn’t need much. Actually, what he wanted to get from Nightreign would help him in his "internship," but not directly.

’I need books.’

His knowledge wasn’t absolute. Nor was his mory. He could only rember things he’d seen before, and of those things, he could only comprehend what he actually had the ability to comprehend.

There was a lot of knowledge in his head that he simply didn’t understand.

His job was to be a guide and a savior to the true saviors of the world while growing strong enough to handle any threats they could not.

He couldn’t very well guide this world forward if he didn’t know what he was talking about, could he?

’I know what technological developnts need to be made and I know what needs to be researched, but I don’t have a good picture of the tiline that I should follow.’

Unlike his overall plan, this one was more of a rough outline with plot points. He left it as a job for his regressed self to put together the proper tiline once he’d gained all the right knowledge.

This trip to Nightreign was only one of many that would occur for the sa purpose, but that didn’t make it any less important.

Gio’s lack of money did, though.

He didn’t have the funds to purchase much, so he only bought four or five books before returning ho and sleeping for the night.

The next day was also spent casually. He t Ricky again and the two of them spent so ti together before Gio went ho to do nothing for the rest of the day.

He was only waiting for that mont. He slept one more ti before it arrived.

The day of his departure.

He packed two bags that held all the clothes he had, a backpack with daily necessities and other smaller things he wanted to bring with him, and, of course, his utility belt.

He looked a little odd with a gun strapped to his back with a backpack over it, but was there a more convenient way for him to carry his stuff?

Raymond sent him the eting ti. It was only an hour away now, but the eting place was around that far away from Gastle as well.

He said his farewells to Ricky the previous day. Once he’d done the sa with the Old Lady, he made his way to the gate where Seb was once again waiting for him with a car.

"You ready?"

They were words he’d already heard before, but the destination was different.

"I am. I bet you’re glad that you don’t have to be responsible for this ti."

Seb grinned.

"I won’t pretend you’re wrong. If you didn’t know you were a headache, it would be a much bigger problem."

He couldn’t be happier with the job of dropping Gio off and leaving him alone. He couldn’t imagine the stress he’d have to go through if he had to accompany him.

"Get in. There are people waiting on you."

Gio nodded and did as he was told.

His military rcenary internship would begin today.
