"I’m here to pick up Zoey, and I’ll drop you off on the way?"

Zoe Monroe popped out from behind him and hooked her arm around Vera Yves, as if afraid she would refuse, "Co on, Vera."

Winston Valentine’s driver was waiting on the side, "Miss Yves, President Valentine instructed to take you ho."

Zoe Monroe hugged Vera Yves’ arm tightly, and Vera couldn’t shake her off. Helplessly, she said, "Alright, I’ll go with you, can you let go now?"

Miles Monroe obviously breathed a sigh of relief too.

Vera Yves glanced at the driver on the side, "Please tell President Valentine I appreciate his kindness."

The three of them got into the car.

Zoe Monroe sat in the back with Vera Yves, scrolling through her phone, "Vera, the social dia circle is buzzing! Cecilia Vaughn has really made a na for herself this ti! I was too excited earlier and forgot to take a video!"

Zoe Monroe liked every video.

Vera Yves watched the scenery outside the car window constantly receding, her mind drifting sowhere unknown.

"Cousin, stop the car up ahead," Zoe Monroe said with a smile, "I’m heading to my mom’s tonight, it’s just a few steps away, I’ll walk from here!"

Miles Monroe pulled the car over to the side of the road, and Zoe Monroe happily got out of the car, sneakily winking at Miles Monroe.

The car started up again.

The compartnt was quiet. Vera Yves leaned against the car window, closed her eyes, and assud a non-communicative posture.

In silence the whole way, the car stopped in front of the clinic over twenty minutes later.

Miles Monroe saw that her eyes were still closed, didn’t call her, just quietly watched her.

Until the air beca chilly, worried she’d catch a cold, Miles Monroe called out to her, "Vera."

Vera Yves opened her eyes, noticing the car had stopped, thanked him and got out.

Miles Monroe got out too, walking to her side.

Wearing high heels, Vera Yves stumbled a little upon getting out. Miles Monroe wanted to steady her, but she avoided him.

Miles Monroe withdrew his hand, his voice hoarse, "Vera, can you give another chance?"

Vera Yves stopped in her tracks, "If we started over, would you still leave alone at our wedding?"

Miles Monroe had pondered this question more than once in recent days.

"I could choose a better solution."

Vera Yves gave a soft laugh, "You never understood my true fears. If you understood even a little, you wouldn’t have left there."

Vera Yves looked back at him, "Jane Shea said you have a cleanliness obsession, which is why you never touched ."

Miles Monroe looked at her in surprise, "Vera, you know it wasn’t like that."

"Yes, I know." Vera continued, "But she also said you just wanted a woman willing to marry you."

Miles Monroe wanted to hold her hand.

Vera Yves stepped back, "She also said that even at our wedding, if she beckoned, you’d leave without hesitation."

Miles Monroe looked sowhat incredulous, "Vera, I..."

"So much I know. I was certain you’d never do that, yet you still left ."

Vera Yves laughed softly, "Actually, the reason I decided to be with you back then was partly out of spite. You probably won’t understand, but there was an inexplicable rivalry between Jane Shea and long ago."

Vera Yves laughed self-deprecatingly, "Turns out, I still lost."

"I didn’t give you enough security."

It was only at this mont that Miles Monroe deeply understood the impact of his past actions.

"Now, when I close my eyes, I can still see your back as you left." Vera Yves stepped back further, "I’ve seen your back too many tis, I really don’t want to see it again."

Vera Yves turned away, opened the door, fearing that if she looked back even once more, she’d soften.

Winston Valentine returned to the villa to find linda Shelby sitting in the living room.

linda Shelby elegantly took a sip of tea, "I wondered why the engagent party had to be so grand, turns out it was to set the stage for this big drama."

Winston Valentine looked sowhat tired, "Mom, I’m the victim here."

"Bang!"

The teacup was thrown to the ground, and linda Shelby sneered, "Victim? Do you think I’m as dumb as you? Do you even know what you’re doing? With things like this, are you waiting for your father to bring that woman into the house?"

Winston Valentine saw the teacup on the floor, bent down, and picked it up.

linda Shelby looked at his trembling right hand and frowned, "Because of Vera Yves, you’ve ssed up all my plans! Your father has sidelined all my people in the Valentine Group, what am I supposed to use to fight him?"

Winston Valentine tossed the teacup into the trash, "Mom, have you ever thought of divorcing him..."

"Winston Valentine!" linda Shelby looked at him in disbelief, "Do you know what you’re saying? Have you forgotten how he treated us? Has he ever fulfilled his duty as a father to you? Don’t you hate him?"

Of course, I hate him.

If I didn’t, how could I have ended up like this?

"Their wedding is set for spring, indicating he’s ready to fight to the death." Winston Valentine glanced at linda Shelby, "Actually... he’s not completely unaware of your affairs."

linda Shelby’s eyes paused, "My affairs are none of your business! You should think about how to get Grandma to give you her shares!"

Winston Valentine looked at his mother, recalling how she once smiled so gently at him.

He could never forget that day when he overheard the servants gossiping about his parents’ latest fight while at the old house.

Fearing for his mother’s wellbeing, he snuck back ho.

There was no sign of Tristan Valentine’s presence, only chaos everywhere, evidence of their fierce quarrel.

He went upstairs, and passing the staircase corner, he heard his mother’s voice.

It seed both pained and joyful.

Then, through a crack in the door, he saw the man who played the father role in his childhood, pressing his mother down on the bed.

In that mont, the world felt sickeningly repulsive.

He hated Henry Sterling, a man of such low status, how could he treat his mother that way?

He hated Tristan Valentine even more; without his betrayal, none of this would have happened.

He ran out of the house, wandered aimlessly on the streets, later got into a fight, t Cecilia Vaughn, whose outstretched hand felt like the world’s last bit of goodwill to him.

...

Mark Yves quickly made arrangents for Vera Yves to visit Rae Rhodes in prison.

Rae Rhodes was sowhat surprised to see Vera Yves, "If you’re here to mock , there’s no need."

"Your mom is really worried about you."

Rae Rhodes let out a cold laugh, "Do you think if I were really Cleo Sutton’s daughter, Tristan Valentine would let stay in prison?"

Vera Yves did suspect that Tristan Valentine’s illegitimate daughter, no matter how serious her cri, he had the ans to keep her out of jail.

Rae Rhodes eyed Vera Yves, "Every ti we’re together, are you secretly laughing at for being a bumpkin?"

"I never did." Vera Yves maintained her composure.

Rae Rhodes sneered, "You’re just relying on your looks. If it weren’t for Winston Valentine’s covert help, you’d just be a corpse by now!"
