Chapter 124: Chapter 124
Alia sat on her grandmother’s bed, watching as Margaret disappeared into her closet. "I would love to take sothing belonging to you to the north so that I have a piece of you there. How about that carriage you were going to give to ?" She asked.
"I have sothing better," Margaret returned with a stack of boxes.
"You should have let
help you," Alia stood up to take the three boxes from her grandmother. "Did you pack rocks inside of these? Why are they so heavy?"
"You’ll see soon. I’ve been making them for a while now and they’ve finally arrived today. Here. Open the smallest one first," Margaret sat down on the bed and handed Alia the smallest of the three boxes.
Alia sat down beside Margaret, excited to see what was on the inside. Outside of her mother, Margaret always had the best gifts. "Is this for my hair? The end is so pointy," she touched the sharp end of the hair decoration. If she was not careful with this, soone could seriously get hurt. "Is this to protect
in case soone tried grabbing my hair?"
"It is ant to be in your hair at all tis so if a demon tries to attack you, you can easily pull this out to defend yourself. My family has secrets about what can hurt a demon. From the mont your father started to ss with the north again, I started to make a couple of weapons to keep this kingdom safe. After your engagent, I ordered three special things to be made for you," Margaret explained.
’Was that what the cart on her land was for?’ Alia rembered. She rembered the cart being taken off her grandmother’s land the day she was supposed to sleep over.
"Will you be giving the castle these new weapons? If so, what will you say to Fraser?" Alia asked since Fraser could not know about demons.
"That they are a donation and leave it at that. He’ll be thankful soone else had made a donation and money does not need to be taken from the castle to pay for new weapons."
"That is true. Thank you, grandmother," Alia said as she placed the first gift in her hair. She would make sure to wear it every day to keep herself safe. "What is in the next one?"
"Open it and see for yourself," Margaret handed her the second box which was a little bit bigger than the first box.
Alia’s eyes lit up at the sight of the dagger in the second box. "Now I must truly learn how to fit with all these weapons you are giving . I should be able to hide this under my dress right on my thigh. I will need to have a thick pouch made so that it does not cut . Can I know what is the secret that helps them work against demons? Is it the material or sothing else? It seems like regular iron to ."
"It is regular iron but it has been mixed with water that fell from the sky-"
"Rain?" Alia replied and received a smack on her arm. "That is what you call water that falls from the sky. It would be funny if rainwater was the demons’ weakness. All we would need to do was attack them during a rainy day."
"It is not rainwater. It is a special water that fell from the sky. This water is unlike any other in this world. One of my relatives was fighting a demon and as they were running away, they stumbled into this water. The demon followed after them and for so reason began to burn. It is said that this water fell from where the Gods are. A place where no demons are allowed and that is why they burn when they touch this water. I heard this story many tis as a child," said Margaret.
"Why haven’t you told
any of these stories as a child? I wouldn’t have believed the stories were real but I would have enjoyed the stories. Are there books for
to learn about these things? About demons and whatever else is out there?" Alia knew that since people like Killian would be much stronger than her even if she learned how to fight, the best thing to defend herself with was knowledge.
"Open the last box," Margaret handed Alia the biggest of the three boxes. "There are many copies of these papers so there is no need for you to worry if you get one dirty but you must make sure to keep them out of sight. From the people here and in the north. Demons should not be aware of how much information we have about them."
Alia flipped through papers with drawings of people who looked straight out of nightmares. So had pointy teeth and their facial expression was drawn to be as scary as possible. "Demons, vampires, werewolves, trolls," Alia read a few of the nas at the top of the paper. "All of these things truly exist?" Alia asked in disbelief although she already knew demons were real.
It was crazy how a couple of days ago she was unaware of just demons existing and now there were countless papers before her with nas she never heard of.
"The world holds many secrets, dear. Many of these creatures had long died or maybe they are just hidden. As of right now, your main concern is just demons but I have given you the information on the others just in case you run into one and need to identify them," said Margaret.
"Thank you. It has been scary to travel to the north without knowing about any of this. My head feels like it is about to explode because of all this information," Alia stated as she touched her aching head.
Margaret chuckled. "It has always been hard for people like us to process that we are not alone or the superior species. That is why we cannot tell more people about these secrets. There will be too much panic and people will not think straight about their actions. After a while, it will not stress you to think about it. Take it from
since I had a hard ti accepting what my father and grandfather told ."
"Did they show you a demon to make you believe these creatures were real or were the papers just enough for you to believe that they were not lying?" Alia asked.
Margaret rembered the ti she visited her grandmother and heard screams in the middle of the night. She followed where the screams were coming from and nearly passed out at the sight of her father and grandfather fighting a demon who had co to get revenge on her family. There was no better convincing her than that.
Her family wanted her to join in continuing to wipe out demons and other creatures but that life did not interest Margaret. Margaret understood that demons were dangerous but she did not agree with killing all of them because normal people like her were scared that there was sothing more powerful than herself out there in the world. She didn’t believe that all demons were bad and deserved to be killed just because they were demons. There were normal people who had done bad things but they were just imprisoned.
"I will tell you more about my past when you and I see each other again. Rember, our goodbye today is not forever. You and I will see each other soon," Margaret took Alia’s hand and squeezed it. It wasn’t easy for her to let Alia go now that the ti ca but she had to. She could not take her words back after she pushed for Alia and Killian to be together.
"Of course, we will see each other soon. Don’t tell
you were not planning to attend my wedding? I would love it if you could stay in the north right before the wedding but I know it is too dangerous. I will write to you every day to the point you will get sick of them. I am worried about you here alone. I know that you are familiar with the castle and must have allies but I do not trust anyone to not harm you. Fraser will not want you behind him," Alia said as she knew Fraser wanted to be the sole person making decisions.
If she could kill her own father, why would it be so hard for Fraser to kill his grandmother? It wasn’t like Fraser and Margaret were that close to each other.
Margaret patted Alia’s head like she would when Alia was a child. "I have survived worse enemies than Fraser in this castle and even at this age, I will do it again. Do not worry about , child. You need to focus on yourself in the north as there is a lot of danger there. Soon you will have what you have always dread of. You will sit on a throne and rule as queen of the north."
