Chapter 675: Chapter 713: Emily Berns’ True Nature
John Brown softly said, “Emily Berns, I know doing this is unreasonable, and it’s quite unfair to you as well. But I’m doing this for our daughter’s well-being. Think about it. She’s still young and doesn’t understand much. She should be enjoying happiness and growing up joyfully. If we burden her with our adult issues, it would only cause her distress and take away her happiness.”
Emily Berns knew John Brown made sense, and with a huff, she kicked him and said, “You bastard, if you stayed with , then wouldn’t our daughter be with her real mom and dad?”
John Brown used to fear Emily Berns, and he still felt extrely guilty towards her. His tone remained gentle as he said, “Emily, if you had let know earlier that you were having my child, I would have been raising our daughter with you. But when you told about the child, I was already married to Gina, and I couldn’t bear to abandon her. Plus, lody Yoody was pregnant with my child. If I were to be with you, what would I do when lody asks for the sa?”
Suddenly, Emily Berns pounced on John Brown, pinching and twisting him while cursing, “You bastard, who told you to be such a cad, getting involved with one woman after another.”
John Brown let Emily Berns vent her anger, not tensing his muscles completely, knowing it would only make her angrier. Letting her express it was better than opposing her.
After a while of venting and seeing John Brown holding back, Emily Berns stopped, snorting and said, “You bastard, if I had bullied you like this before, you would have run away a long ti ago. Why aren’t you running now?”
John Brown laughed, “Well, the priest may run, but the temple won’t run away.”
“Humph!” Emily Berns glared at John Brown and then stood up. When she lunged at John earlier, she had ended up sitting on his lap unconsciously. Now that she wasn’t bullying him, sitting on his lap made her feel embarrassed.
It was strange that despite having a daughter together, Emily Berns and John Brown argued as usual. However, when it ca to getting a bit closer, she felt awkward.
“So, do you agree with what I said?” John Brown cautiously asked again.
Emily Berns tossed her head, “I disagree.”
“Emily, I’m really doing this for the child’s good; there’s absolutely no other intention. Once she’s a bit older and can understand, I’ll tell her, and she’ll be able to comprehend.”
“Pfft, do you think our daughter would understand? You don’t want her real mother, yet you let another woman be her mom. She’ll surely hate you by then.”
John Brown rubbed his nose and said, “If she’s like you, then she’ll definitely hate . But if she’s like , she might understand.”
“Ah! You bastard, are you saying I’m unreasonable?” Emily Berns was furious again, lunging at him to vent her frustration once more.
This ti, John Brown held her waist instantly. Emily Berns’s body went stiff as she stamred, “W-what are you doing?”
John Brown found it a bit amusing but dared not make any extra movents, saying, “Emily, let’s handle this slowly. After all, I’m the child’s biological father, and my goal is for her to live happily. You’re her biological mother, so don’t you share the sa thoughts? As for the best approach, we’ll discuss it gradually.”
“Humph, it would be best if we both raised her together, but you just wouldn’t agree.” Emily Berns glared at John Brown, but her montum weakened.
“Well, alright then, let’s think about this slowly. Didn’t you want to see the child? It’s her day off today, so let’s go together.”
“Right now? Aren’t you attending the wedding?”
“I ca with Sarah Utah. She’s been the bridesmaid throughout, and there’s nothing much to do. Leaving now is fine.”
“You ca with her? Don’t tell you’re involved with her too?” Emily Berns’s hands imdiately pinched John Brown’s arm.
John Brown hurriedly said, “No, no, I’m just faking it. We’re clean, definitely cleaner than with you.”
“You…” Emily Berns spat at John Brown, saying, “Then let’s wait a bit. I ca here today to repay a favor. I promised them I would sing two songs during dinner later. Also, let tell you, this is my last ti being a star. From now on, I’m going to settle here.”
John Brown’s lips twitched, imdiately prompting Emily Berns to anger, “What’s with that expression? Do you hate ?”
John Brown quickly said, “No, not at all. How could I hate you?” But deep down, he felt troubled. With Emily Berns staying in YODC City, it would be restless in the future, and peaceful days might be coming to an end.
“Humph, you’re not being sincere. I’m telling you, if you make happy, I’ll give you less trouble. If you make unhappy, I won’t let you have any peace either.” When she said this, Emily Berns’s face was filled with unexplainable pride.
Emily Berns used to give John Brown a headache whenever he saw her, and now she’s given him a daughter, which feels like she has a Presidential Pardon. John Brown used to have a few tricks to handle Emily Berns, and at worst, he could just walk away and ignore her. But now he can’t even do that anymore.
“Rember, don’t leave, wait for to finish singing, and we’ll leave together. By the way, did I sing well?”
John Brown wasn’t pretending this ti, he nodded and said, “It sounds good, really quite good. I never would have thought you had such a marvelous voice, I never realized it before.”
John Brown’s complint made Emily Berns extrely happy, and she said, “Humph, there’s a lot you haven’t realized about . You never used to praise , and it’s really not easy to get a complint from you now.”
John Brown is different now compared to before. When he first t Emily Berns, he was still a rookie, clueless about how to woo girls, and only had lody Yoody in his heart. No matter how good Emily Berns was, he wouldn’t think of her in that way. When he t Emily Berns again, the situation with the child had him completely flustered, leaving him no mood to appease Emily Berns. Now that this tactic proved to be effective, he naturally wanted to use it more, as it could at least ease things with Emily Berns and make her compromise a bit for the child’s sake.
Then he showered her with flattery, “I’m not just praising you; I’m telling the truth. Listening to that song, I was practically intoxicated. It felt like Heavenly Harmony; I was totally srized.”
“Really?” Emily Berns squinted her eyes into a slit, smiling widely.
“Of course it’s true!” John Brown nodded earnestly and said, “What I’m saying is absolutely true, Emily. I really didn’t expect you to have such talent. You don’t know, while you were singing, not just , but everyone around was totally captivated. Even after you finished singing, they were still in a daze.”
“If I sing for you every day, would you stay with ?”
Emily Berns’s words left John Brown with a headache. This woman couldn’t be praised.
Seeing John Brown looking distressed, Emily Berns blurted out, “Humph, see, you’re being insincere. You better be there listening for . If I don’t see you while I’m singing, I’ll imdiately announce that I have a daughter, and her father is John Brown.”
“Yes, yes, I’ll definitely be there.” John Brown chuckled dryly, not daring to say anything reckless.
Fortunately, Emily Berns looked at the ti and realized it was about right. She proactively left first and didn’t leave with John Brown, as her status was still quite sensitive. If anyone noticed her with John Brown, it would cause a lot of trouble.
John Brown finally breathed a sigh of relief, albeit a temporary one. The upcoming matters were still quite troubleso. With Emily Berns in YODC City, things were bound to be lively, though this was not the kind of liveliness John Brown desired.
After staying in the room for a while, John Brown received a call from Sarah Utah. He told her he was resting upstairs, and Sarah Utah inford him that they had started eating and asked him to co down, prompting John Brown to head downstairs.
At John Brown’s table, it was all of Sarah Utah’s classmates, but Sarah Utah was busy accompanying Sarah Johnson with toasts and couldn’t co over to eat. John Brown wasn’t very acquainted with these classmates, so the al wasn’t particularly enjoyable for him.
Lisa Smith and John Adams originally intended to target Sarah Utah, but there was no opportunity. They wanted to disparage John Brown, but the classmates were all focused on discussing today’s wedding, particularly Emily Berns’s attendance, which indeed made the wedding much more splendid.
For a wealthy person like Sarah Johnson’s husband, inviting so big stars is quite normal, even those more famous than Emily Berns. As long as you pay the price, they can be invited. However, Emily Berns isn’t the type who cares for money. No matter how much you offer, she just won’t co. In the entertainnt circle, Emily Berns appearing at such events can be counted on one hand, making her attendance all the more precious and a hot topic for discussion.
As such, no one paid any attention to the topics raised by Lisa Smith and John Adams, leaving Lisa Smith with no choice but to shut up, as continuing would seem entirely unreasonable.
The music started again, and Emily Berns took the stage once more, instantly bringing the banquet’s atmosphere to a climax. Everyone stopped eating and drinking, focusing solely on Emily Berns singing on stage.
“Wow, did you all notice? Emily Berns keeps looking over here when she sings,” a girl said excitedly, waving her hands to remind everyone quietly.
“Yeah, yeah, she’s definitely looking our way.”
A boy casually remarked, “Could she be interested in one of us?”
“Go to hell!”
“With the way you look, you actually think Emily Berns would be interested in you? Completely delusional!”
Several girls imdiately criticized that boy. They were completely unwilling to believe that Emily Berns was looking at anyone. However, none of them noticed that John Brown, under Emily Berns’s gaze, was feeling cold sweat trickling down his back and beads of sweat popping on his forehead.
