The council room was bathed in the soft glow of flickering torches as the mbers gathered to discuss their next course of action.

"We can’t afford to underestimate these assailants any longer," Selena cleared her throat to address the council. "They’ve proven themselves to be a grave threat. They could wreak havoc on our settlent if we don’t act now."

Nods of agreent rippled through the room. The council mbers knew that their safety and the community’s future depended on taking swift and effective action. But the question was, how?

Even the scouts could get any information about them, and fighting an unknown enemy was a recipe for disaster. Just look at what happened with Aric. He underestimated Shinon and lost his life. If they made the sa mistake, it could be their turn to lie six feet under.

"I propose we form a team to investigate the nearest settlent," Selena continued. "They might have encountered these assailants or have information about them that could prove valuable."

The suggestion resonated with the council, and murmurs of approval filled the room. It was a practical approach to gather vital intelligence and forge alliances with neighbouring communities.

After all, should a need arise, they’d be able to call reinforcents from them and could even depend on others in their ti of need and vice versa.

"But who’ll do it?" Rico asked.

"We will."

Shinon and Lova stepped forward, offering to lead the team that would embark on the investigative mission. Alongside them, a select group of individuals volunteered to join the mission.

Shinon and Selena had already discussed the plan in advance. As much as Selena wanted to join Shinon as the settlent’s leader, she was responsible for putting the settlent before anyone or anything else.

"We’ll form the team to investigate the neighbouring settlent," Shinon declared. "anwhile, the rest of you should stay back and focus on defending the settlent in case those assailants return."

Kira and Rico exchanged knowing glances, realising they had to leave for the second settlent soon.

"Alright then," Selena concluded the eting. "Let’s ensure we do our best for the sake of our people."

As the eting concluded, Rico and Kira walked up to Shinon, who was conversing with Lova and Selena but stopped once he saw them approaching.

Sensing the mont, Selena dragged Lova away with her, giving the trio the ti to bid farewell for the final ti.

"Looks like this is it then," Rico said with a smile. "We won’t be here when you return, as we’re heading to the second settlent."

Shinon nodded. "Stay safe, you two and hopefully, we’ll et again."

"Rember your promise," Kira said before playfully punching his chest. "Stay in contact."

"Of course."

With resolve, Shinon, Lova, and a small group of volunteers set out towards the neighbouring settlent. They fired up their vehicles and rushed to the closest base.

Their journey was challenging, from navigating treacherous terrain to encountering small groups of zombies. Nevertheless, no obstacle could stop them from completing their task.

However, as they approached the neighbouring settlent, an eerie foreboding fell upon them.

"What the hell... when did this happen?" one of the team mbers mumbled, her eyes wide in horror.

The once-vibrant community now lay abandoned and in ruins, a ghost town frozen in ti. Broken windows and scorched buildings painted a grim picture of the unfolding tragedy.

Lova’s voice wavered as she spoke, as emotionlessly as ever. "It’s as if they were wiped out overnight."

As Shinon looked around the entrance, his gaze fell over the unique mark the assailants had left around their settlent when they wrote sothing about Shinon’s secret.

"Just like in our settlent, the masked figures also left their mark here," he mumbled as he got up after analysing the mark. "Be alert. They could still be hiding sowhere close."

The group cautiously explored the ruins, searching for clues on the masked assailants’ motives or origins. Basically, they were looking for anything that could be useful to them.

Soon enough, they stumbled upon remnants of a once-vibrant community—a child’s toy left abandoned in the street, a faded mural on a crumbling wall, and unsettling graffiti in dark ink. As if that wasn’t enough, they kept finding human remains everywhere.

But amid the debris, sothing caught their attention—a partially hidden entrance leading underground. Shinon imdiately summoned his shadow tentacles to clear their path, and what they found was entirely unexpected.

It was a bunker, aged and worn but seemingly untouched by the devastation that had befallen the surface. Shinon felt a strange mix of curiosity and suspicion as they ventured deeper into the hidden structure.

The dim lights flickered to life inside the bunker as they opened the door. A lot of stuff was thrown around the bunker, from food to ammunition. Shinon wasted no ti and threw everything inside his domain as they proceeded deeper inside the rooms.

It was then they ca across a locked room. However, Shinon quickly managed to pick the lock using his shadow. As he opened the door, he realised it was a library or sothing of that sort.

"Let’s take a look inside," he said while stepping inside the room. "Tell if you find sothing."

Dusty shelves lined with journals and research notes unveiled the secrets of the settlent’s past. Lova began to skim through the docunts, her eyes widening with realisation.

"Take a look at this," she called out to the others. "I’m not sure, but it seems they were researching the sa organisation we encountered."

The group gathered around, reading snippets of information hinting at a powerful, shadowy organisation pulling the strings from the shadows. The words were cryptic, but the implications were clear—a hidden force at work had sinister plans.

As Shinon read the reports, he realised they were similar to what Aric had told him on the day of his execution. What sealed the deal was that the mysterious individuals were called the Rulers in the reports, just as Aric had ntioned.

But the question was, how did the people of this settlent know all this? Could it be their nosy behaviour was the reason for their downfall?

Lova’s voice trembled as she voiced their shared fear. "Could it be that this organisation is responsible for everything happening? That they’ve been orchestrating it all?"

"It’s starting to seem that way," Shinon’s gaze remained fixed on the docunts, his thoughts racing. "But who are they, and what do they want?"

Their discussion was abruptly interrupted by an unsettling change in the atmosphere. The room grew colder, and the dim lights flickered ominously. A shiver ran down Shinon’s spine as he realised they were not alone.

They rushed out as the bunker’s entrance creaked open, revealing the sinister silhouette of a masked figure. It was one of the assailants, ard and staring at them as if they had sohow wronged him. A sense of dread settled over the group as they faced the intruder.

Shinon’s mind raced, and he couldn’t help but wonder if they had inadvertently stumbled upon sothing they weren’t ant to discover.

The masked figure’s presence served as a chilling reminder that their quest for answers had taken a treacherous turn, which had put them in grave danger.

Lova stepped forward, her voice steady despite the fear in her eyes. "Who are you, and what do you want?"

The masked figure remained silent, their mask concealing any hint of emotion or identity. Instead, the man began walking up to them but was careful not to get too close.

Shinon’s hand instinctively reached for the hilt of his blade, his fingers curling around the worn leather grip. He was prepared to defend his comrades and himself if necessary.

But sothing about the intruder’s presence left him unnerved, as if they were playing a dangerous ga and one wrong move could cost them their lives.

As the intruder drew nearer, the lights flickered and sputtered, casting eerie shadows that danced across the walls. Lova’s stance remained resolute, her gaze never wavering from the masked figure.

But Shinon stepped in front of them, ready to deal the first blow the mont such need arose.

"The lady asked you sothing," he demanded. "Tell us who you are and what you’re after."

The intruder finally halted, their dark figure outlined by the flickering lights. And then, in a voice that sent shivers down their spines, he uttered a single word.

"Answers."
