The moon hung low on the horizon, casting long shadows that stretched like dark fingers across the settlent. It was a night like many others, marked by an eerie silence that seed to envelop the world.
But for Shinon, the night held a disquieting undercurrent, a sense that sothing had been set into motion.
He sat on the rooftop of one of the settlent’s buildings, eyes scanning the periter. It was his thing to do when he felt confused and didn’t know a way out of an overwhelming issue. But this ti, even stargazing wasn’t going to help him.
"What has beco of my life," Shinon smiled wanly, staring at a long-forgotten constellation. "Just when I think everything is getting on track, sothing randomly pops up and throws off. For now... I can hope the scouts find sothing tangible about those attackers."
Earlier that day, Selena had dispatched scouts to gather information about the masked assailants who had disrupted their lives. But they were yet to return, and besides, Shinon wasn’t too optimistic about them finding anything of use to him.
More importantly, the revelation that his father’s mark adorned the gear of these mysterious attackers had sent a ripple of unease through Shinon’s soul.
Could it be that his father was entangled in the threads of this post-apocalyptic world just like him? His heart ached with the uncertainty, and he couldn’t shake the nagging feeling he needed to uncover the truth.
But he was too helpless to actually do anything about it. He had even asked Widow about the assailants, and even she had no idea who they were, and without any leads, it was impossible for Shinon to do anything.
"Shinon," a soft voice broke through his reverie.
It was Selena, her steps light as she joined him on the rooftop. Her gaze was gentle, as if she understood his turmoil, even though she had no idea what got him so tense and on the edge.
"Can’t sleep?" she asked, taking a seat beside him.
Shinon shook his head, his eyes never leaving the darkened landscape. "No, not tonight. There’s sothing... sothing I can’t quite put my finger on."
"I know what you an. These events have shaken us all," Selena sighed, her breath forming a mist in the chilly night air. "First Marcus and now this... But we can’t let it consu us. We need answers, and we’ll find them. No matter the cost."
"You’re right," He nodded in agreent, appreciating her presence. "I just wish we could do sothing other than-"
Their conversation was interrupted by a distant shout. Shinon’s head snapped toward the disturbance, his senses on high alert. The settlent should have been quiet at this hour. The sudden commotion got both of them worried.
Without hesitation, he and Selena made their way to the source of the disturbance. As they reached the heart of the settlent, they were t with a troubling sight. A group of settlers had gathered around a ssage board, their faces etched with disbelief and anger.
Shinon pushed his way through the crowd, Selena at his side. His eyes fell upon the ssage scrawled in bold, defiant strokes: "We know your secrets, Shinon."
A murmur of unease rippled through the crowd. Whispers filled the air, and Shinon could feel the weight of suspicion settling on him. It was as if soone had taken a sledgehamr to the fragile trust that had held their community together.
"Secrets? What secrets?" Shinon heard one of the settlers mumbled, and others readily joined in.
After what Marcus had done, the settlers were on edge, and the re ntion of a secret was enough to get everyone on edge. However, Selena promptly stepped up and ensured to kill whatever hoax was cooking in everyone’s mind.
"Gather yourselves, people!" she declared. "We can’t let fear and mistrust tear us apart. We need to stand together, now more than ever."
Their words seed to reassure so of the settlers, but doubts still lingered in the air. Shinon couldn’t bla them; these were uncertain tis, and paranoia was a natural response to the unknown.
As they attempted to quell the rising tension, another commotion erupted at the settlent’s entrance. The scouts had returned, their faces etched with weariness and frustration.
Selena rushed to et them, followed by Shinon and a few settlers. Everybody was keen to know their findings. However, as they got closer, it was clear from their expression that the scouts didn’t find anything about the intruders.
"We tried our best, but it’s as if they vanished without a trace," Mitra, the team leader, inford Selena. "They knew more about the city than us and used that to their advantage and disappeared even though they were carrying a corpse."
Shinon clenched his fists in frustration. Although he knew it would be the likely outco, he was hopeful that maybe, just maybe, they’d find sothing that Shinon could use to discover the truth about his father.
"We’ll figure this out, Shinon," Selena sensed Shinon’s wild emotions and touched his shoulder reassuringly. "But for now, we must keep the settlent safe and united."
"Of course," Shinon replied. "As a leader, that should be your first concern. As for the intruders, leave their investigation to ."
Selena was a bit taken aback by Shinon’s determination to find the intruders and realised there had to be sothing that got Shinon so serious regarding the assailants.
"But first, we need to organise a council eting. Let the settlers voice their concerns, and we’ll address them openly and honestly. Transparency is our best ally right now." Selena stated. "Once that’s done, we can assemble a team to help you with your investigation."
"You’re right, Selena. Let’s gather the council and bring everyone together." He nodded in agreent, impressed by Selena’s ability to think pragmatically in tis of crisis.
The council eting was called, and settlers from all walks of life gathered in the settlent’s central hall. Selena stood at the forefront, flanked by Shinon and other trusted council mbers.
She began by recounting the events that had unfolded—the masked assailants, the ssage, and their relentless search for answers. Selena also spoke of her concerns and doubts, acknowledging the fear that had taken root in their hearts.
But she also emphasised their strength as a community and the importance of unity in the face of adversity, urging the settlers to voice their concerns openly, promising transparency and accountability from the council.
As the eting progressed, the settlers shared their fears and suspicions. So questioned the ssage’s authenticity and if there was so secret Shinon was hiding from them.
While others worried about the settlent’s security. Shinon listened attentively, addressing each concern with patience and understanding.
Selena’s presence beside him bolstered his resolve. As the leader, her unwavering support and the trust everybody had in her quickly cleared Shinon of any suspicions.
By the end of the eting, a sense of solidarity had erged among the settlers. The cloud of doubt over them dissipated, replaced by a renewed determination to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
With that, the public eting ca to an end, and the council mbers headed inside the eting room to discuss their next steps regarding the assailants.
