Chapter 246: Chapter 246: Don’t Seduce People
Nathaniel Nathan, however, didn’t even spare her a glance. He simply looked at Zachary Preston and said, "It isn’t my place as an outsider to interfere in your family matters, Mr. Preston, but Vera is the Nathan Family’s savior. Anyone who bullies her is bullying our family."
Vera Xavier was a little surprised to hear that. ’While his words didn’t spell out their relationship, they came pretty close.’ She stole a glance at him. He wore his usual public mask of refined indifference, his face completely expressionless.
Cara Preston, however, was so furious upon hearing this that she nearly fainted. ’Is he developing feelings for Vera? No! Absolutely not! He can only have feelings for me!’ Her hands clenched into fists, her nails digging into her palms without her even noticing.
Zachary Preston was not the least bit intimidated by Nathaniel Nathan’s powerful aura. He simply said, "Vera is my daughter. I won’t let anyone bully her."
Nathaniel Nathan gave a slight nod and handed her the backpack he was carrying. "Get some sleep. Try not to look at that pig face too much, or you’ll have nightmares."
Vera froze for a second. ’Pig face?’ It only took her an instant to realize he meant Cara Preston. She smiled and nodded.
Cara Preston caught on as well, and her hatred for Vera intensified. ’This is all her fault! If she hadn’t brought Nathaniel here, he never would have seen me like this!’
After Nathaniel left, Rona Langdon started screaming, "So shameless at such a young age, always fooling around with boys!"
Vera turned to Cara and said, "Cara, I know Mom is yelling at you, but you have to believe she’s the person who cares about you most in this world. You absolutely can’t get angry!"
Cara Preston: "..."
Rona Langdon: "..."
That feeling of landing a punch on a bale of cotton was truly awful.
Zachary Preston said in a heavy voice, "No one is to ever bring up what happened today again. I know full well who was right and who was wrong. Furthermore, I trust the police to be impartial!"
Vera could guess that while she was away, Cara Preston and Rona Langdon had slandered her to no end. For him to say this meant he actually believed Vera, not Cara.
The expressions on both Rona Langdon’s and Cara Preston’s faces turned ugly. Cara suddenly burst into tears, her body wracked with violent sobs, looking as if she was about to faint at any moment.
Rona Langdon shot her a look, then immediately pulled her into an embrace. "My poor Cara! If we hadn’t taken you to the hospital for a check-up after you got hurt, we never would have found out you have a heart condition! Those heartless people are trying to kill you! You mustn’t get worked up! If something were to happen to you, what would your mother do?"
Zachary Preston was taken aback. "Hasn’t Cara always been perfectly healthy? How could she have a heart condition?"
"This is the doctor’s report. Do you think it’s fake?" Rona Langdon retorted, pulling out Cara’s medical chart. The diagnosis did indeed state that she had a heart condition, and the doctor’s orders read: "Rest is advised. Avoid anger and agitation."
Zachary Preston had been about to tell Cara Preston to return to her own home after the college entrance exams. But upon seeing the medical chart, he couldn’t bring himself to say the words. Such news would surely be too much of a shock for her...
Vera remarked coolly, "This heart condition of Cara’s certainly appeared at a convenient time."
’If she has a heart condition, she can’t be agitated. Now, anyone who provokes Cara Preston would be accused of trying to harm her.’
Vera had to admire Cara’s adaptability. ’Her shamelessness has reached a whole new level. No wonder my past self was so thoroughly played for a fool by her.’
She reached for the medical chart and glanced at it. The signing physician’s name was Walter Archer. The moment she saw that name, a memory from her past life surfaced.
