Chapter 245: Chapter 245: No Conscience

Nathaniel Nathan looked at Vera Xavier, slightly surprised by her words. His stare made her a little uncomfortable. "What is it?" she asked.

"You’re giving my dowry to another man? Have you no conscience?" Nathaniel Nathan asked, looking at her.

Vera Xavier coughed lightly without saying a word. ’So this is what it feels like to shoot yourself in the foot...’

Her expression delighted him. "I’ll let it slide this once," he said. "Don’t let it happen again."

Vera Xavier immediately realized he was teasing her again and pouted slightly. He leaned down and brushed a kiss across her lips, as light as a dragonfly skimming water, then took her hand and led her downstairs.

In reality, Nathaniel Nathan was in an excellent mood. Seeing her like this reaffirmed his good judgment; she handled matters with grace and always repaid kindness.

As they came downstairs, Master Nathan was sitting at the dining table, watching them with a smile. Vera Xavier had always considered herself thick-skinned and unflappable, but her face turned red again under Master Nathan’s smiling gaze. ’It’s all Nathaniel’s fault,’ she grumbled internally. ’Why did he have to keep me in the room for so long, and then hold my hand all the way downstairs? He’s making something out of nothing.’

"Time to eat, time to eat!" Master Nathan called out with a chuckle.

The meal was excruciatingly awkward for Vera Xavier. She tried to keep her distance from Nathaniel Nathan and just fade into the background, but he insisted on putting more food into her bowl, drawing Master Nathan’s frequent glances.

Once the meal was finally over, Vera Xavier quickly came up with an excuse to go home. Master Nathan was just about to give Nathaniel a "kick" to get him moving, but he had already stood up. "I’ll take you home," Nathaniel said.

Vera Xavier was about to refuse, but Master Nathan spoke up first. "The city’s not very safe these days. I heard that Wesley Kane from the front courtyard was beaten badly and left on the side of the road like a dead dog. It’s even more dangerous for a young woman like you. You should let Nathaniel take you."

The moment Wesley Kane’s name was mentioned, Vera Xavier felt a twinge of guilt, suddenly certain that Master Nathan knew something.

Nathaniel Nathan was already pulling her out the door by her hand. The night air was as cool as water, and as they strolled along, both felt the moonlight was exceptionally beautiful tonight.

As they strolled leisurely down the street, Vera Xavier felt as if they were actually dating.

’Hmm, it’s a nice feeling!’

Nathaniel Nathan couldn’t bear to part with her, so he walked her right to her doorstep. At the gate, they heard Cara Preston crying inside. Vera had been about to tell him to head back, but he unexpectedly reached out and opened the gate.

Inside, Cara Preston was sobbing as she spoke to Zachary Preston, "Dad, you know about that night sister came home late! It was obviously her..."

"That night, just like tonight, I was the one who brought Vera home," Nathaniel Nathan said in a low voice.

At his arrival, the crying Cara Preston froze. Rona Langdon, who had been fanning the flames, had a stiff expression on her face. Only Zachary Preston stood up, his expression unchanged, and said, "I believe Vera, too."

His trust in Vera meant he disbelieved Cara.

Cara Preston’s expression instantly soured, but with her face already swollen up like a pig’s, it was impossible to see any change.

What a piece of work she was. Even at a moment like this, she was actually worried that if Nathaniel Nathan saw her in such an ugly state, it would destroy whatever beautiful image he had of her in his mind.

She quickly turned her head aside, hating Vera Xavier to her very core. ’Vera must have done this on purpose!’ she thought furiously. ’She knew my face was hurt, so she brought Nathaniel here on purpose to see me like this, just to ruin his image of me!’
