Chapter 247: Chapter 247: Reckless Youth

Walter Archer was Rona Langdon’s middle school classmate. In her previous life, after Rona Langdon had framed Zachary Preston and sent him to prison, she had divorced him and eloped with Walter Archer’s son...

Later on, it was exposed that Walter Archer had killed a patient on the operating table because their family hadn’t given him a bribe. The incident became a huge public scandal.

Rona Langdon’s face was full of displeasure as she said, "What do you mean, ’a timely heart condition’? Vera Xavier, Cara is your sister! You can’t keep making her angry; you have to give in to her on everything! If you cause her condition to flare up, I’ll tear you apart!"

Vera Xavier’s expression was cool, her voice light as she said, "Oh, is Cara’s condition really that serious? The equipment in our city’s hospital isn’t the best, and the doctors aren’t top-tier either. Why don’t we take Cara to the provincial capital for another examination? If they confirm she has a heart condition, we can make sure she gets proper treatment. Mom, you care about Cara so much, you wouldn’t refuse this suggestion, right? After all, it’s for her own good!"

The color drained from Rona Langdon’s face. "Absolutely not!"

Vera Xavier asked with a look of astonishment, "Why not? Don’t tell me you’re unwilling to spend the money, Mom? In your heart, what’s more important: money, or Cara?"

Rona Langdon was speechless, but Cara Preston was much quicker to respond. "Mom is just looking out for me. The doctor just warned me not to overexert myself. The car ride to the provincial capital takes several hours, and I’ve always gotten terrible carsickness. My body just wouldn’t be able to take it."

"Yes, yes, that’s it!" Rona Langdon jumped in. "Anyone who tries to make Cara go to the provincial capital for another check-up is trying to murder her!"

Vera Xavier smiled coolly. She glanced at Zachary Preston, who was standing nearby with a pensive look. She believed that he understood everything now. Not bothering to say another word, she shouldered her schoolbag and went upstairs.

When Nathaniel Nathan returned to the Nathan residence after dropping Vera off, Master Nathan grinned and asked him, "So, today, upstairs... you and Vera..."

"Grandpa, that’s hardly befitting of an elder," Nathaniel Nathan said coolly. "I have taken your teachings to heart and dare not cross any lines."

Master Nathan was having none of it. "Rules are rigid, but people are flexible! Vera is such a wonderful girl. Aren’t you afraid someone else will snatch her up?"

Nathaniel Nathan: "..."

Master Nathan smacked him on the back of the head. "You two were alone in a room for that long, with a gorgeous girl right in front of you, and you didn’t even think about making a move? Are you a man or not?"

Nathaniel Nathan: "..."

’Grandpa, are you sure it’s okay to be this inconsistent?’

Seeing his grandson’s rare, dumbfounded look, Master Nathan summarized smugly, "If you’re not a little wild in your youth, you’re wasting it. When the time comes to make a move, you make a move!"

Nathaniel Nathan took a deep breath and said, "You are absolutely right, Grandpa."

The next day, when Vera Xavier arrived at school, she heard the rumors being spread by Cara Preston and Rona Langdon. Vera raised an eyebrow and smiled coldly. ’Looks like I’ve been too lenient with Cara Preston.’

Vera Xavier hadn’t been in her seat for long when Shane Caldwell came in. She noticed something was off about him today. As soon as he entered the classroom, he gave her an unreadable look, then sat down in a huff and immediately started tearing through a practice exam.

Vera Xavier figured that with the college entrance exams approaching, the normally mouthy Shane Caldwell must have finally felt the pressure and decided to start cramming. She didn’t give it much thought. In fact, she was relieved he wasn’t pestering her with his usual incessant chatter, as it let her focus on her own work in peace.
