Chapter 233: Chapter 233: A Ruined Reputation
Vera Xavier’s voice hadn’t been loud, so not many of her classmates had heard her. But after the loudmouthed Elise Langdon shouted, the whole class heard. There was no shortage of clever students, and they immediately understood the implication, their eyes filling with disdain.
Elise Langdon saw her classmates’ expressions and still didn’t understand. Just as she was about to say more, another girl who was usually on good terms with Cara Preston couldn’t take it anymore. She reached out, pulled on Elise’s arm, and made her sit down.
The corner of Vera Xavier’s mouth quirked up. ’Cara Preston eggs on Elise Langdon to come after me every single day. I bet she never thought Elise would be the one to mess things up for her. It’s really true that you don’t have to fear a god-like opponent, only a pig-like teammate.’
Shane Caldwell, sitting beside her, had watched the entire argument with Elise Langdon. When Vera turned back, he saw the mockery glinting in her eyes and immediately understood she had done it on purpose.
When Vera Xavier turned back and saw him looking at her, she raised an eyebrow. "What are you looking at? Never seen a pretty girl before?"
Shane Caldwell: "..."
’Alright, he had to admit it. She really was prettier than all the other girls in their class, even prettier than the school belle. The slight arch of her brow was as radiant as a plum blossom just beginning to bloom—lofty and elegant, yet with a cold, unparalleled beauty.’
He could hear his own heart pounding and felt a blush creeping up his face. He quickly snorted, "Narcissist!" to hide how flustered he was.
But Vera Xavier wasn’t even looking at him. This nonsense had wasted her study time, and she needed to get back to grinding through her practice problems.
Shane Caldwell had expected her to banter back and had even mentally prepared a comeback. But after waiting for what felt like an eternity, she still hadn’t responded. His face, which had just returned to its normal color, turned toward her. She was already back to working on practice problems, ignoring him completely.
He was suddenly overcome with a sense of disappointment. The way she looked while concentrating on her work was a world away from how she’d been moments before. Her serious, focused expression held a different kind of beauty, and he found himself unable to look away.
Vera Xavier seemed to sense something and turned to look at him. He immediately whipped his head back around like a thief caught in the act. She just looked baffled.
Since Cara Preston was still a student at No. 1 High School, the police came to the school that morning to speak with Juliana Taylor and inquire about her.
The police rarely came to the school, so their visit immediately drew the attention of the other teachers. They all pricked up their ears to listen. Although the police and Juliana were speaking in a private office, the soundproofing was so bad that the teachers outside could hear everything clearly.
Just as the police were leaving after finishing their inquiries, Principal Gage arrived. Seeing Juliana Taylor’s troubled expression, he asked, "What’s going on?"
Juliana Taylor gave him a brief summary of what had happened. As a teacher, even though she didn’t like Cara Preston, she was still unwilling to think the worst of her. She concluded by saying, "This whole thing still needs to be investigated."
Principal Gage and Zachary Preston went back many years, and his face fell the moment he heard the news. Juliana Taylor said it needed investigation, but if the police were already involved, what more was there to investigate? He said in a low voice, "That girl is a real disappointment."
The fact that Principal Gage held his position so securely meant he was a diplomatic man who rarely let his emotions show. For him to speak so bluntly meant he was completely disappointed in Cara Preston and felt sorry for his old friend.
Juliana Taylor was a responsible teacher. Since the incident also involved Vera Xavier, she called her to the office during the long morning break to ask for details about the situation.
