She didn’t finish her sentence, but Juliana Taylor understood completely. She nodded in agreement. "Give some people an inch, and they’ll take a mile. You did nothing wrong this time. She needed to be taught a lesson, but..."
Juliana Taylor asked worriedly, "But what about the situation with your family?"
Word had already gotten out about Rona Langdon causing a scene at the police station last night. Juliana Taylor was aware of the Preston Family’s unique situation. Moreover, Vera Xavier was currently her top student and a contender for the highest score in the province, so naturally, she was especially concerned.
Vera Xavier knew what Juliana Taylor was worried about. After all, she had once intentionally failed all her tests because of her family situation. She said calmly, "None of this will affect my grades."
Juliana Taylor smiled. ’This girl is so perceptive and clever.’ She nodded and said, "It’s good that you have a handle on it. Don’t let these trivial matters get in the way of your future."
Rumors only need a kernel of truth to take flight, fueled by people’s imaginations. With Jack Judd now part of the story, the original defamation charge that landed Cara Preston in custody quickly morphed into accusations of promiscuity.
By afternoon, rumors about Cara Preston sleeping around had spread to every corner of the school. Even the cleaning ladies had heard the gossip.
Crestfall wasn’t a large city. With the entire student body and faculty spreading the story, news of Cara Preston’s detention quickly swept through town.
And just like that, Cara Preston went from being a beloved, kind, beautiful young woman to a slut on everyone’s lips. Her reputation was in tatters.
Initially, Vera Xavier had only wanted Jack Judd to bother Cara Preston every day so she couldn’t focus on her studies. She never expected Cara to dig her own grave and fall right in. All Vera could think was, ’Serves her right.’
During breaks, she could overhear conversations like these just by stepping out of the classroom:
"Did you hear? That girl Cara Preston from Senior Class 4 has been sleeping around. They say she even got pregnant and had an abortion!"
"So shameless. If you’re going to do that kind of thing, at least keep it private. But no, she had to do it out in the open. Serves her right for getting arrested."
"She’s the one who did it, but she tried to pin it on her own sister. That’s just vicious!"
"She’s a total disgrace to our school, doing something like that while she’s still a student!"
Waiting at the police station was torture for Cara Preston. When Rona Langdon had shown up to cause a scene last night, Cara had actually felt a flicker of hope. She was well aware of her mother’s ability to raise hell; few people could stand up to her.
Even if Rona Langdon couldn’t sort it out, there was still Zachary Preston.
She had always known Zachary Preston wielded considerable influence. He was just always so incorruptible, never pulling strings or using his connections. But she had grown up with him as her father; he couldn’t possibly abandon her.
That was why she had been so sure last night: all Rona Langdon had to do was call Zachary Preston, and then Zachary would call the police station, and she would be released.
But reality delivered a harsh slap to the face. She ended up spending the entire night locked up at the station.
That one night was enough to make her hate Zachary Preston to the bone. He had actually abandoned her! ’And I called him Dad for more than ten years,’ she thought bitterly. ’He doesn’t deserve it!’
