Since I thought that the celebration of her arrival was sothing extrely important, I took extra care in dressing up for the occasion. Instead of making it a state affair, the king had opted to arrange a small dinner party for the royal family mbers and so prominent mbers of nobility instead.
"Can I ask a question?" I asked Prince Leonard while we were getting dressed.
"What is it that you want to ask about?" He asked without looking my way.
"This might sound a little strange," I said before hesitating.
"Just ask away," the prince replied encouragingly. He turned to face , and I could tell that I had his undivided attention at that mont, which made even more nervous to state my question.
"Didn’t they know in advance that the baby is a girl?" I asked the question that had been burning on my mind for a couple of days now.
With the technology available in this day and age, it isn’t difficult to determine the gender even if the mother is still in her early stages of pregnancy. That was why I was slightly confused that everyone seed so shocked that the baby turned out to be a girl, as if they didn’t know anything about the child’s gender beforehand. Had they been so curious, which I undoubtedly thought that they were, then why didn’t they check in advance?
"That’s a very good question. You see, a royal baby is also a political tool, and because of that, the gender of the baby can bring about conflict that could endanger the baby and the mother. So to prevent conflict, there is a rule that prohibits checking for the baby’s gender before it is born," the prince explained smoothly.
"Oh, I never knew that," I replied softly.
"Well, now you know. Personally, I don’t think that the gender of the baby matters, but I have to say that this does put the king in a sticky situation. He must have been disappointed after losing Darius’s baby and having Florian’s child being born a girl on top of that," Prince Leonard said before he let out a sigh.
I turned away to hide the sorrowful expression on my face as I felt a huge lump of guilt well up in my chest because what was probably the most disappointing of all was the fact that I wasn’t pregnant.
...
"Mila!" a bright and sweet-sounding voice called out to the mont that I entered the venue. I turned around to see Duchess Flavia waving at enthusiastically. I waved back while thinking that it did make sense that the Duchess would turn up to the party celebrating the arrival of her granddaughter. It was probably the first ti that I saw the Duchess together with other mbers of the Royal Family. However, unlike the Grand Duchess, Duchess Flavia chose to stick to my side rather than keeping the king company.
"Let’s head over there to our seats. Oh, I definitely made sure that we get to sit next to each other," Duchess Flavia said as she hooked her arm into mine.
"You two can go ahead," Prince Leonard said before smiling at us.
"Well then, I don’t mind stealing her for a bit," Duchess Flavia said a little flirtatiously to the prince.
It wasn’t long after that everyone was seated in their seats at the dining table. Although it was supposed to be a celebration, the event was nothing more than a cozy dinner with extra-special catering. I shared a casual conversation with Duchess Flavia before Prince Leonard joined in. Duchess Flavia clearly had a talent for engaging anyone in conversation. She made our conversation so entertaining while also making sure to engage Prince Leonard. It was because of her that I felt so relaxed and that I had a pretty good ti.
After finishing my salad, the main course was served. I stared at the large piece of steak that was placed on a round luxurious plate in front of . My nose twitched, and I felt that the sll of the steak felt unusually strong. I lifted my hand up to my nose as I looked away.
"What’s wrong?" the Duchess asked with clear worry in her tone.
"Oh, nothing. I just think that the steak slls a little strong," I replied before flashing her a smile to tell her that I was fine.
"Should I ask them to get you sothing else?" the Duchess quickly suggested.
To say that the steak slled a little strong was actually an understatent. At that mont, the sll felt so unpleasant that I could barely take it. The only reason that I didn’t get out of my seat was that I didn’t want to create a disturbance during the dinner party.
“No, it’s fine...” I replied as I tried not to stir up unnecessary trouble.
"What’s wrong, Mila? Are you feeling unwell?" the prince asked as he placed a hand on my shoulder. I turned to face Prince Leonard, but before I could reply to him, a feeling of nausea strongly overwheld . I suddenly felt so sick, and my stomach started churning.
"Mila, are you okay? Your face is a little pale. Should we head back?" the prince asked with a very worried look on his face.
I didn’t want to inconvenience anyone, most of all Prince Leonard. Because of that, I tried my best to bear with it. I began to wonder if I had eaten sothing strange that was causing to feel so sick all of a sudden.
"Mila just told that the steak slled too strong. Maybe we should ask the chef to prepare her another main course," Duchess Flavia reported to the prince.
"Right, that could be arranged without any problem," the prince replied as he slowly stroked my back. Prince Leonard was probably not aware that his comforting gesture only made feel like I was ready to throw up. Suddenly, I felt like I could no longer hold it in and that I was on the verge of puking.
