Selene POV
"K...Kragen is your son?" I asked, my eyes popping out of my head.
The woman nodded slowly giving a crooked smile.
"I an, I had no idea," I smiled back "He never talks about his family or you for that matter and I’ve never asked which I know it’s bad of but it’s fine. Wow, I’m delighted to et you and..." I trailed off as the realization struck .
If Kragen was the King of the underworld and this was his mother... it could an that she was either a goddess of so sort or sothing else but I was sceptical about asking her. I didn’t want to provoke her either and since she didn’t furnish with that information, it would be best to keep mute about it.
"Kragen is one of my best friends... maybe the only best friend I have right now. Big heart, and is the sweetest god I’ll ever et if I’m lucky. You did a good job raising him," I comnded.
"I wish!" she smiled sadly "I didn’t raise Fenrir and he’s good with a large heart because it’s his nature and he chose to be like that. Given the kind of father he grew under, he’s supposed to be cold and without a heart but I’m surprised he turned out differently,".
"What do you an?" I gazed at her curiously.
"When I was pregnant with him, because of my position and responsibilities, I had to give him away at just 8 weeks," tears pooled in her eyes "It was the hardest thing to do because I wanted so much to be his mother but I just couldn’t and the responsibilities I had didn’t give another option,".
I was quiet for a few minutes wondering how huge her responsibilities could be that would make her abandon her 8-week-old baby. But what do I know?
"In a lot of ways, Selene... I admire you. You have the resolve and the grit that most creatures do not have. You’re stubborn..." she chuckled "But in a good way and to say the truth I wish I could be like you but I cannot and even though it’s a little late for , this is the only way I can be a mother to my son,".
"What do you an? What are you talking about?"
"You see!" she rose to her feet, her back turned to . I could feel the atmosphere crackle and beco denser "Fenrir had aided you a lot of tis to co against your fate. Not just once, or twice or thrice but severally and for each of those tis, he keeps getting on the nerves of the Fates. They’re running out of patience and everyone is just waiting for the next thing he’d do before they unleash their wrath on him and there’s only so much, I can do. I too have to follow orders no matter how powerful I am,".
That was news to . I had no idea that I was going against my fate.
"Kragen didn’t tell any of this," I murmured "In the beginning for saving he agreed that I would give him sothing in return but recently, he hasn’t talked about it and I know about my fate which is the dark moon’s but I am not trying to go against it,".
"Yes, you are!" the woman sighed "Your daughters were designed to have died that day that Fenrir saved you. You could have been arrested by the soldiers, thrown into the dungeon for days until you lose your baby but each ti, he cos in between us saving you and now, I’m afraid, you’ve run out of ti,".
"I don’t understand!" I quizzed becoming more confused "What are you talking about?"
"You have to let Fenrir go. You have to stop making him your errand boy. He’s a god... one of the biggest in the realm and yet he’s reduced himself for you. You must put an end to whatever relationship it is that exists between the two of you. I am begging as a mother who wants to protect her only child and as a mother...".
"Don’t blackmail , ma’am" I scoffed "Kragen is old enough to choose his friends and he’s not my errand boy. I always make sure of that. I have never made him do things he doesn’t wish to do and you know this. Besides, aren’t you all supposed to help us out every ti? What’s this talk about killing my children?"
"The fate of the dark moon is one of the biggest naces that keeps happening every cycle in our world and it’s ti to put an end to it. We wanted to... sohow when we saw that you had already broken the number one rule, we just had to take advantage of the situation,".
"The situation?" I asked still confused "You an, I was going to be punished for trying to leave my mate? The sa person that dealt with for seven years in a row and in all seven years, I was never respected... maltreated in the worst way ever... that is the sa person you didn’t want to leave? What were you all doing when I had to put up with everything?".
"It was your fate, Selene!" the woman said coldly without avoiding my gaze "Even though soone played foul but you would have suffered nonetheless and we didn’t know how to put an end to the cycle but thankfully we found an opening, we were just going to take the babies and give you a second chance at life but you didn’t want that... so, now it’s having to be you!"
A cold chill ran down my spine as I stared at this woman. Wasn’t I stupid to be holding a conversation with a total stranger for more than thirty minutes?
"You know!" I scrambled to my feet "I will be a fool, to take everything you’ve been saying to heart. I don’t know you; we’ve never t anywhere and for the moon’s sake, you might be one of these people going around looking for gullible people to deceive. I’ll leave first,".
"You will not stay alive to nurse your child, Selene..." the woman spoke again, making to stop in my tracks. "We’ll give you from now until the baby is born and we’ll keep Noah too, but that would depend on how much you cooperate with us,".
I threw my head backwards and laughed, then walked back to the woman, my eyes burning with annoyance now. "You have a lot of guts to show up in front of , spitting nonsense. In case you don’t know I am a big deal around here. The Luna of this pack and I can get you arrested on a whim. Don’t try !"
"If you say so!" the woman chuckled "Listen... your idle threats won’t work on . It’s out of concern that I had to leave all the important things to do... I could have sent one of my ssengers but I ca myself, so you can do with this information whatever you would. Your unborn child will be the next Lycan King of Moon Whisper and bring together the territory’s four nations. For the first ti, there’ll be one Lycan King that will rule over all,".
"Whatever you’re talking about!" I tried to interrupt but she continued as if I had not spoken.
"Your children, Maeve and Vina will do well. Vina would make an excellent replacent for her father and Maeve would serve beside her as her Beta. As for Xavier, he would never be with another mate for the rest of his life. He’s going to remain alive and watch everyone he loves die before him. He would beg for death but will not be given that until... he serves his punishnt in full,".
"You can’t be serious!" I reiterated, as my heart pounded wildly in my chest. She didn’t seem to be joking or mincing her words.
"When he let you go, he also broke the law of the fate of the dark moon, by extension, he’ll be punished too. I’m sorry, Selene... I wish there was another way but that’s just it,". She said finally.
We both stood there for a minute as I gazed at her, trying to make sense of everything she had just said. After a while, I cleared my throat, fighting the tears that gathered in my eyes.
"I’ve always wanted to be a mother to my children... the thought of not having to be there and watch them grow..." I trailed off as a tear rolled down my cheek "That’s a bit too unfair... I don’t deserve it!"
"You’ll be compensated with a rebirth in another lifeti, Selene and for what is what, you’ll be putting an end to the centuries-year curse and only you can break that fate for the first ti but if you have any other requests to make... I might grant it who knows!".
"I just want to know that my children would be in good hands when I’m not here," I sobbed.
"You were right about Noah... he’s a good man and he’s going to take good care of the kids. Don’t worry about that! Brooke would leave eventually and lasting peace and normalcy would be restored to the pack. So, don’t worry!"
I nodded biting my lips hard. If this was true, I might as well take advantage of it now.
"Then... can I at least hold my child for a few minutes and na him?" I said, "I deserve that at least,".
The woman stared at for a few seconds before nodding. "Okay!".
