"How about Vina?" Maeve tugged at the leg of my pant pulling out of my reverie. When I turned, she was regarding suspiciously. "Should we also ask her to lie to Mummy? You know she’s Mummy’s best friend and might spill the secret. What do you intend to do?"
"Not if I talk to her first," I replied quickly wondering what was wrong with . I should be a good example to my kids not aiding them to lie but what could I do, if Selene ever finds out, I’ll be dead. "You don’t know your mom as much as I do. If she ever finds out, it’s going to be an issue and she might not let you guys co to vi..." I was about to say the rest of the words but rembered I was talking to my brilliant four-year-old and she was going to catch on.
"She won’t let us co visit you?" Maeve arched her brow in my direction "Maybe in the first few days and then she’ll feel guilty about not letting us spend enough ti with you and will put us on the next flight to Greyhound. That’s just how mum is... half the ti, she never follows through with her threat. Her anger fizzles out faster than a candle,".
"Not just that," I shifted uncomfortably "I just think it’s best I avoid any situation that will lead to that entirely for everyone’s sake,".
"Fine!" she rolled her eyes "When we were still in Moon Whisper, I used to hear all the maids whisper about how good looking you are and then sigh and wonder what kind of luck mummy has for her to have the two handso n ever,".
"How does that make you feel?" I squatted in front of her with a wide grin. "People pinning all over your dad and maybe trying to make friends with you to see if you can hook them up with ,".
"Dad!" she gave an accusatory glare "You cannot say such word around children. Those are bad words what if I pick them up? Mummy would be so mad if she’s here and hears you saying such word to ," she shook her head and crossed her arms around her tiny chest.
"I’m sorry dear, it won’t happen again," I murmured trying to fight back the proud smile that was fighting to co on my face. Won were all the sa irrespective of their age. I tried to reach for her but she shrugged off my hand and continued to give the silent treatnt. On cue, the door, I heard footsteps coming towards the living room of the pack house.
Turning to Maeve, I stroked her hair "I’m sorry darling but I’ll have to leave you here to tend to your sister or sleep off or whatever it is you want to do. Daddy wants to go and have an important in the living room. So, can you wait for a few minutes? I’ll be right out, okay?"
"Yeah," she nodded "Can I watch cartoons? Please?"
I was torn. She has already exhausted her screenti for today and Selene had told repeatedly about letting the kids watch TV for more than an hour each day that it made them hyper but at this point, I had no choice. If it will keep her less distracted, then I would take it.
"Okay dear, go ahead,".
She nodded with glee and scampered out of the room. After she left, I went into the living room. Kragen and Lucius entered the sa ti I did. As soon as Kragen’s gaze t mine when we entered the room, he shot look of pure disdain. This ti, he didn’t bother to hide how he felt.
"Do you realize that you’re the architect of your problems?" he shot at "Your fate and that of Selene’s is bad but wasn’t supposed to be so bad to the extent that you’ll over hate your wife which you did all because of that woman. She’s a witch, Xavier... disguised as a wolf,".
"I know that!" I responded "Tell sothing I don’t know,".
Kragen stared at for a while then shook his head muttering, "How did you beco an Alpha in the first place if you’re this dull? Do you realize what it ans for you to be sleeping around with a witch? How she can make you forget even your na and everything that mattered most to you? Isn’t it strange that there was a ti you liked, Selene. Not love – love her but you had at least the smallest compassion for her and wouldn’t stand by to see her suffer?"
I shifted uncomfortably, piercing him with a fierce look of mine. "Yes, there was such ti but that was in the beginning of our relationship and the full extent of the curse wasn’t as potent as it was at that ti,".
"Curse?" he scoffed "The fate of a dark moon is not a curse, Xavier. It’s not a curse as you Werewolves think it is. It is a fate and what does a fate an? A curse? No! it ans that you cannot decide what happens to you and that no matter how you try to run away from a life’s path, sohow, you’d end up on it, right?"
"Yes... And when this fate of yours is so rigid, it’s also a curse... we are not wrong, Kragen. As Werewolves, we should have a lot of options to a path, so...".
"It was a commoration between the moon goddess and the two families who lost their children and themselves on the sa day. "Stop insulting , Kragen..." Lucius who was standing beside him shook his head slowly, trying to dissuade .
"So, she told Alpha Kiba that she won’t be able to bring his family back but she could make that day special and Kiba insisted that children born on that day should have a fate so intertwined that even if their parents refused their union, that they would have to agree because these children would not be able to do without each other and in his grief, he said that they mustn’t be so much in love but let them not be able to leave,".
"I don’t rember reading this part of the story, Kragen," I shook my head "Where did you hear this?"
"I’m not finished, Alpha Xavier," he said coldly and hissed "So, the moon goddess granted his wish and decided that it will not be a usual occurrence but once every ti that the moon shed its skin. So, you won’t be able to do without your mate... you’ll have to leave with them, stay with them through thick and thin and cannot be separated with them no matter what but do you know what you just did or rather what Belinda did?"
My heart began to pound in my chest. If this had to do with her putting under a spell to hate Selene, then I’ll kill her myself.
"What?"
"She’s a direct descendant of Gaia... and for years, she turned your heart away from your True mate and made you lose her. The farther you are away from Selene... the weaker you beco. It doesn’t matter if you feel fine now or if she helped rejuvenated you but you will always need Selene. It is your fate to be her one and true mate but guess what... you broke her heart and made her leave and that’s why, your thread of fate has not intertwined with Belinda,".
"For Moon’s sake," I laughed trying to hide the fear in my heart "What are you talking about now?"
"I guess, Gaia had waited centuries just to do this. To get revenge for her daughter and because of your foolishness and stubbornness. Why didn’t you listen to Lucius when he was asking you to tell Belinda to leave the pack when she first ca here with that long, fake, concocted lies?"
"Wait a second!" I scoffed and turned to Lucius "Are you now telling him our business? A total stranger? Really?"
"He doesn’t need to tell anything, Xavier. I know these things and I’ve been in the business longer than you can ever imagine. I know everything about you... when you were born and when you first ca to be with Selene. I see everything and now... you’ve created the worse ss ever known in history and all I can see is doom,".
"Hey... don’t curse !" I turned helplessly to Lucius who just and exasperated look on his face but he wasn’t making an attempt to hide it.
"It’s not a curse!" Kragen’s voice took on a steely edge. "The person who must have recruited Belinda and sent her after you must be soone well-versed in secrets like this and knew that using a direct descendant of Gaia would do a lot of damage but do you want to know what’s funnier... they’re two. I know Kurtis is the other person who escaped from the fate of the dark moon but managed to have the fate that can help him seize the power of the universe to beco and elental wolf... I think this person that put you onto Belinda shares similar fate,".
"And how do you know all these things?" I questioned.
Kragen drew closer to , and lowered himself to my height until we were staring eye-to-eye at each other "Because, I am a god!"
