Selene POV
"Queasy?" Brooke muttered shifting uncomfortably "I can relate Luna but I don’t have to run a test again. I already did one and showed it to His Majesty,".
"Yeah," I nodded "I know about that but don’t worry, if you’re not interested in running the test then I won’t force you. You may go,".
"Okay, Luna," she gave a wide, empty grin before she left the room. As soon as I was alone with the fertility doctor, I turned to her eagerly.
"Do you think she’s pregnant?" I asked.
"She doesn’t seem like a woman with a baby, your majesty and I didn’t pick up a baby’s heartbeat too when I stared at her. Besides, if she truly is pregnant with the King’s baby, she should be throwing her weight around and will not hesitate to get tested just to throw it to your face. A lot of won want your position plus given you’re yet to give the King a child... a baby is one of the easiest ways to trap him,".
"I see," I smiled "That will be all but I’ll call you anyti soon, I have an idea on how to make her take the test to determine if she’s lying or not,".
"She might try to get pregnant at all cost now, your Majesty. Even if she doesn’t have access to the King, she might use another person. If she’s lying, she might have to tell another lie to hide the first lie and we cannot determine if the child is His Majesty’s or soone else’s when it’s in its mother’s womb. There is a technology for that, at least the humans are doing it now but not us...".
"Don’t worry about that," I said with a confident smile "I know how to deal with that. Thank you so much. You can go now,".
"How about you, Your Majesty?" the doctor gave a once over. I knew in the past few minutes she had been trying to scrutinize but thankfully, my fate makes impossible to read at any ti.
"I’m fine, doctor. I just wanted to lure her into taking a pregnancy test but it didn’t work but it’s fine. You may go now. If I require your services, I’ll let you know,".
She nodded in acknowledgent and quietly slipped out of the office leaving . Alone, I took a deep breath as my mind ruminated over everything that had happened today and a few minutes ago.
If I go to Noah and tell him that Brooke is faking her pregnancy, he would never believe and just like what Annabeth advised, I’ve decided that I won’t be putting the spotlight on anyone these days except . So, I would work with what I know and only reveal it when I have hard-core evidence.
There was a way out however to make sure she behaved. Quickly, I pulled out my phone and sent a text. I had just finished sending the text when I decided to pack up for the day. As soon as I dropped the phone to pick up my work bag, there was a knock on my door and Noah poked his head inside my office.
"Do you have ti to see one more person, Luna?" he asked giving a wink.
"I suppose I can make an exception for you," I played along "Co on in,".
"How are you doing today? I saw you staring at your phone several tis today. Is everything alright? Were you expecting a call or a text? Is it sothing I can help you handle?"
I contemplated telling Noah the truth but I was worried he would not handle it well either. On the other hand, I hated telling lies because lies have a way of coming back to haunt you. Besides, since Xavier was no longer taking my calls, I might as well travel to Greyhound to know what was going on but Noah would never allow it.
"It’s the girls!" I blurted after a mont’s hesitation "I’ve been trying to get across them for a few days but they won’t take their calls, the sa thing with their father and his Beta but it’s fine. I know they’ll call back or sothing, they might be busy who knows,".
Noah studied for a while before he crossed the room and ca to where I was. "I know you’re freaking out," he said cupping my face "And a million and one thoughts, maybe more may have crossed your mind too but what you’re thinking is not it. Xavier will not take the girls away from you like that. He’s not that kind of person,".
"Then why aren’t they picking up or returning my calls? Do you know how excruciating this pain is just to sit and wait, unable to do anything? I feel like I’m losing my mind by the minute. There must be sothing I can do,"
"Well, I hope one of those things is not travelling down to Greyhound," he fixed a pointed stare "Because I won’t let you, Selene. You can’t keep finding the smallest opportunity to go be with Xavier. I too, am tired of being lenient and understanding. I’m sure the girls are fine and maybe Xavier is just trying to pull tricks and make you co to him,".
"Or they could be in grave danger," I cried. "Listen, there’s no reason for Xavier to keep them away from , honestly. He is not that kind of person. So, sothing dire must have happened for him to just stay silent on and I’m worried that If I don’t help to contribute in a way sothing might happen to them,".
"Nothing will happen to the girls, Selene," Noah sighed "You know what, if there’s no response before the end of the day, then we’ll look for another way but you’re not travelling to Greyhound and if you disobey my orders, I’ll have your punished. I’ll try calling him myself to see if there’ll be any response from my end,".
"I am the girls’ mother... I should be with them. They’re only babies, Noah... please," I sobbed.
"You didn’t consider all of that when you were handing them over to Xavier?" he scoffed "Don’t play with , Selene. I won’t fall for this trick, okay? You have lots of responsibilities here and we should be more focused on trying for our children. I’m serious about that, Selene... honestly, I also want to be a father so I can share in your sentints,".
"I am not deceiving you, Noah. I don’t want to go be with...".
"That’s enough," he raised his hand to stop "We are not going to fight about this on such a happy day. I finally did sothing that made all my subjects smile at genuinely and I feel so fulfilled. I don’t want to deal with this right now, Selene. You should be happy with ... we should be celebrating not fighting over this. You’re not going to Greyhound and that’s all. I’ll leave first,".
"Noah!" I called out after him but he ignored and walked out of the office. I crumbled on my desk as my body shook with sobs. Picking up my phone again, I dialled the girl’s phone. After the third ring without a response, I zeroed my mind and wanted to end the call when soone answered.
"Hello!" the tiny voice greeted. It was Maeve. "Mummy?" she called out again after a mont of silence. I stayed still, trying to listen to her voice and to check for signs of distress but she sounded like her normal self.
"Mummy, are you there?" she asked again.
"Y...Yes darling," I stuttered fighting back tears "I am here. How are you doing dear? But before you answer, could you please pass the phone to your dad? Is he close by?"
"I’ll go give him the phone," she replied. I waited for her to give the phone to her father before.
"Hello!" I heard Xavier’s voice "How are you doing dear?" he asked.
"Nothing, I want to ask you for a favour and I’ll be so grateful if you can grant this at least,".
"Sure thing," he urged "Go ahead,".
"First, I want you to put the girls on the next flight back to Moon Whispers. Thank you for everything you have done and I’ll make sure they co visit soon,".
"C’mon, Selene," I heard him sigh "Fine, I apologize for not taking your calls nor returning them. It’s because I’ve been so busy. With Jared in power and...".
"That’s splendid, dear," I said easily interrupting him. "I understand how this works. I get it that most tis you might need to rest and just unwind from everything plus you’re always busy and I forgot to send their nannies with them but don’t worry, I’ll take care of it now and you will have all the ti to concentrate on more important pack issues,".
"Selene, please..." he cried "The girls have barely stayed two weeks with and you want to take them away? That’s not fair okay,".
"You left your phone unanswered including the girl’s own for days and you want to let this go. I’m sorry, Xavier but I don’t gamble with my children’s lives,".
