Kain Locke

"His mochi?" I repeated, mouth wide open with disbelief.

Audrey nodded dazely, "Aren’t you?"

What in the seven hells has co over Kael? "No fucking way I am."

Audrey blinked at , still looking dazed. "But he called you that."

I scoffed, running a hand through my hair. "He can call whatever he wants. And that doesn’t an it’s true."

He tilted his head. "So you’re saying you’re not his mochi?"

I gave him a deadpan look. "Do I look like a damn mochi to you?"

He humd, tapping his chin seriously like a literary professor will do. "Well... thinking about it... you are kinda small. There’s this thing about your eyes... beautiful I could say, And, you’re soft-looking like a fluffy kitten..."

I groaned, blushing shalessly at those remarks. "Audrey."

He grinned. "I’m just saying, moreover who says only an Alpha can find an Oga attractive and beautiful? And If the Alpha heir, Droco himself calls you his mochi, maybe you should—"

"No," I cut him off before he could finish, "Whatever he’s playing at, I want no part of it."

Audrey crossed his arms. "Uh-huh. So you don’t care at all that Kael is walking around calling you his mochi?"

I opened my mouth, then shut it.

Because no, I didn’t care.

Not one bit.

Not at all.

...Right?

Audrey smirked like he could read my mind.

I shot him a glare. "Not. A. Word."

He held up his hands in surrender. "Fine, fine."

I sighed, rubbing my temples. "I swear, if Kael is spreading weird rumors about , I’ll—"

"Do nothing?" Audrey finished for . "Because, let’s be honest, what can you really do?"

I scowled, hating that he’s right. Besides, that man also wandered into my room yesterday and ended up spending the night there, allowing to take the chair. And I didn’t do anything but agree.

"And how’s the mission report?" He asked finally .

I exhaled. "Doesn’t matter. I don’t have much to report anyway." I scratched the back of my head. "We barely made it out alive."

"Barely, huh?" he said, his eyes narrowing slightly. "And the others?"

"They’re... gone," I said, feeling the weight drag down. I couldn’t even properly process the loss.

"Oh... and I heard you were tead with Mateo and two others. They also didn’t make it, did they?"

Oh yes, Mateo. I was so occupied with getting Bella to the base for treatnt that I forgot about him completely.

aning I have no idea whether he died or lived, but could he have really survived? "We barely survived by luck. Bella is out there in the treatnt section. She got poisoned."

Thinking about it, I can’t call it luck. It’s all because of that man, if not, I would also be dead, and talking about it, it’s so unlikely for him to randomly show up whenever I was at the brink of death. "Have you heard anything about an Alpha presence in the base?" I asked, given the fact that Bella had told before that the rules had been bent, who knows if betas aren’t the only party they’re accommodating now.

"An alpha?" He went silent, thinking for what seed like ten seconds before shaking his head negatively, "No, there’s nothing like that. Did you see an Alpha in the base?" He asked.

"Not at all.. I was just wondering if there’s an Alpha."

"There’s no Alpha, and the only Alpha you can find in this base are the Draeven’s, and I’m sure you’re aware of that."

"Right." I muttered.

"Is everything alright with you?" He asked, staring skeptically at .

"I’m fine, just have a lot to figure out." I said.

"Good luck with that. I gotta go pretty," he patted my shoulder, "Since his mochi isn’t aware of where he was then I better start going."

"Audrey!!" I gritted and he raised his hands one more ti.

"Sorry... sorry. It’s not like I can help it." He laughed, smacking his lips before walking away, "And if you ever see an Alpha, let know I’d also like to et them." he said over his shoulder, winking one last ti as he walked away.

"Yeah.." I muttered finally, there’s no Alpha in the base aning it’s pointless. But who is he really? He’s obviously an Alpha, or could he be a beta with a physique similar to an Alpha?

Well perhaps, I’ll figure that out later.

I turned on my heels and headed for the sa room where Mateo and the beta along with were given the mission.

I walked down the hall. Although my body still aches from last night, I pushed the discomfort aside. I needed to report back to the instructor whether I liked it or not.

The corridors were quieter than usual. A few Betas passed by.

When I reached the instructor’s office, I took a deep breath and knocked.

"Co in," a voice called from inside.

I pushed the door open and stepped in.

The room was not that bright, just a dim one from the bulb in the ceiling, a single desk in the center with a few scattered papers. The instructor looked up from his notes. His eyes landed on , scanning from head to toe.

"You finally decided to show up," he said, setting his pen down.

I stood straight, keeping my expression neutral. "I ca to report on the mission."

His gaze darkened. "I already heard. Two Betas died. One Oga poisoned." He leaned back in his chair. "And yet, you’re still standing just like you were during the pheromone attack."

I clenched my fists. "It wasn’t supposed to happen like that. We were ambushed."

He raised a brow. "Ambushed?"

I nodded. "They knew we were coming so we were deliberately set up so as to walk into a trap. It’s already too late, and we didn’t stand a chance."

The instructor studied for a mont, his fingers tapping against the desk. "Mateo?"

I hesitated. "I don’t know. He got separated from us. I don’t think he made it."

Silence fell over the room imdiately.

"And the formula?"

"The formula? That’s what you care about? People died right in front of !" I grind the words out, "All died in my face!" And it’s funny how he wasn’t concerned for them only about the damned formula;

The sa one I retrieved back then!

"People died? Well that’s no new thing, and you know to get the mission done even at the cost of yourself!" He slamd his fist against the table.

I chuckled, biting the inside of my mouth to suppress my annoyance from punching his face! This place is so sick!

"How could we complete the mission when there wasn’t one to begin with! Every single thing in that pace was nothing but an holographic projection! We only walked into a long abandoned factory, it was a murder!"

"You don’t speak nonsense! Are you trying to say I got the wrong order from higher up?"

"Perhaps. Because Bella and her team, even though they were there sooner, couldn’t find it. How could they find one when it doesn’t even exist there any longer!."

"How do you know?" He raised his brows.

"Because the very formula was retrieved by eight years ago!"

Finally, the instructor sighed."Well that is none of my business. As it is, this mission was a failure. And failed missions co with consequences." He said as he reached for a folder, flipping it open. "Normally, the punishnt would be severe. But since you managed to return alive... and you saved an Oga..." He looked up at . "You’ll receive a warning this ti."

I exhaled slowly. A warning. That was better than what I expected. But do I really deserve to be set free? Being the only survivor wasn’t sothing to be proud of. What’s there to be so proud about when the rest die?

"You’ll be sent out again soon but this ti it’s not going to be simple and you’re going to need to go regardless. No rest. No excuses."

"Understood." I muttered, hands trembling by my sides.

"Good." He closed the folder and waved off. "you’re dismissed."

I turned and left, stepping out into the hallway.

My hands felt cold. The weight of the mission, of the lives lost, sat heavy on my chest.

But before I could think too much, a familiar scent caught my attention.

I turned my head sharply.

Of course it was him,

He was standing a few feet away, leaning casually against the wall, arms crossed against his chest. His eyes t mine, and sothing in his gaze made my stomach twist.

I scowled, not giving him an audience as I continued to walk away but he pushed off the wall and took a step closer, grabbing my arm to restrict my movents, "Don’t you think it’s quite rude treating like that? I’m not invisible you see."

I took a step back. "I don’t have ti for all this... just let go." I said, shaking my hand, I was already tired from all this so the last thing I want is him making it worse.

He humd, tilting his head slightly. "You don’t? That’s a sha."

"Let go of my arm," I grind , forcefully peeling his hand off as I turn to walk away.

But before I could take another step, he grabbed my wrist again, "You know that’s not a very nice way to talk to soone you’re going to be sharing life experiences with henceforth."

"The fuck are you talking about?" I snapped angrily.

"Didn’t he fill you in?" He curled an eyebrow.

I frowned, brows tightening with confusion, "In what?"

"Guess I have to say it since we’re technically a team now." He sighed, "Stop looking at like that. I’m not the one who failed the mission, in turn getting paired with ." He said with a smile and my breath caught in my throat.

A mission with him? No... or could it be the one the instructor was talking about?

But then...

I yanked my hand away before he could stop it, "bullshit!" I sneered.

Damn him. Damn every single one of them! I thought as I walked out on him. Even though I can still hear him chucking.

Psycho.
