Chapter 290: Middle Of Nowhere (Ch.290)

A chilling cold wind swept across a vast field, carrying along with it an upper layer of snow, the snow swirled in the wind, raining down ever so slowly over the earth’s surface, as well as over a figure laid down in the snow.

Neveah’s eyelids twitched ever so slightly, the rays of sunlight seeping through her closed eyelids and casting away the haze of sleep that held tight to her consciousness.

A quiet groan escaped Neveah’s lips, she lifted a hand to shield her eyes from the sun rays. Sowhere in the back of Neveah’s mind, she wondered just what that freezing chill was all about.

Unconsciously, Neveah reached out to her side, patting around in search of her covers to fight off the chilly wind, but Neveah ended up with a fistful of freezing cold snow.

’’What the...?’’ Neveah wondered sleepily as her eyes fluttered open slowly to find herself staring right up at the open sky, grays and blues all lded together in a beautiful harmony.

But the beauty of the sight was secondary to Neveah’s astonishnt as she beca fully aware of her surroundings.

The whistling wind, the billowing layer of snow and the chilling cold wetness she could feel through her rider’s suit.

Neveah tilted her head to the side, staring out into the vast field of snow in confusion.

’’Where am I?’’ Neveah wondered as she sat up slightly, glancing around her to discover she sat alone in an unending field of thick snow.

Neveah blinked once, and then twice, yet she opened her eyes to find she was still out on a strange snow land, a place she certainly could not recall how she had gotten to or what exactly she was doing sleeping out there.

’’This must be an illusion of so sort...it surely is.’’ Neveah assured herself with an uncertain chuckle.

If Neveah’s mory served her right, which she was certain it did, the last thing Neveah recalled was being led back to her quarters in the rider’s academy by Elina and Janice.

It was right after Neveah had been let off by the elders with a stern warning and not much else. Neveah was ant to have a good night’s rest before her trials would begin at dawn.

So how had she left her perfectly good bed in the Rider’s Academy, to find herself out in a snow field in the middle of nowhere?

It simply made no sense, Neveah’s conclusion was that it could only be an illusion or nightmare.

Neither of these options sounded all that appealing to Neveah. Thinking back to the last ti she was caught in an illusion, Neveah shuddered visibly and it had nothing to do with the chilling wind.

’’Those fairies are all dead. I could not be caught in their illusion again...’’ Neveah assured herself.

One event of relieving her greatest fears was more than enough to last Neveah a lifeti... Neveah was still yet to get over the scars left on her heart since the mate bond was awakened, she did not think she could face that again.

’’It must be just a dream...only a dream.’’ Neveah assured herself quietly, struggling up to her feet from the snowy ground.

Letting her eyes go closed, Neveah vigorously shook her head from side to side, attempting to shake off whatever mind trick was being played on her but it was still to no avail.

The mont Neveah’s eyes ca open again, she was still standing right there in the middle of nowhere.

’’It can never be that easy, can it?’’ Neveah murmured to herself.

Neveah heaved a quiet sigh as she dusted off the snowflakes from the top of her rider’s suit, before she lifted a hand to unwound her damp hair from it’s pony tail.

The snowflakes had stuck onto Neveah’s hair, Neveah wondered for how long she had been in the snow that her hair had gotten so damp.

Neveah shook her head slightly, shaking off the snowflakes before she ran a hand through her hair to get out the rest of it.

It was a futile attempt considering it still snowed lightly and the snowflakes just got right back onto Neveah’s hair.

’’This is crazy...’’ Neveah grumbled beneath her breath as she let her gaze wander across the field.

Neveah was completely at a loss on what to do, one mont she had been in a strange but oddly comfortable bed of her new residing quarters and the next mont, she was out in an unknown place.

’’The reasonable thing to do would be to find a way out of here, we can think over the rest later.’’ Neveah’s wolf finally made her presence known in Neveah’s mind.

’Which ans you also have no idea how we got here.’’ Neveah thought back to her wolf.

’’I can take a guess. That old Maloway must have waited till we were defenseless and taken us out here to get back at us for growling at him.’’ Neveah’s wolf said with certainty and underlying malice.

Neveah thought over it for a mont but shook her head in disagreent.

’’He is just an old man...and he can barely stand upright. He could not afford to be so petty.’’ Neveah dismissed her wolf’s suspicion.

’’We are the ones who cannot afford to be so considerate. Did you not find it odd that we were let off so easily?’’ Neveah’s wolf thought back to her.

’’I thought narx was our only way to truly live her in the stronghold and not just survive each day looking over our shoulders... But I was wrong, we just are not ant to be here.’’ Neveah’s wolf growled out.

’’There it is again... You get agitated too often recently, and you know as well as I do that it will only get worse if we do not allow at least one bond.’’ Neveah thought back to her wolf.

Neveah’s wolf did not give a response, she could not deny the truth in Neveah’s words.

"In any case, my guess is quite different from yours... I believe this is our trial." Neveah thought to her wolf as she trudged through the snow, heading in a random direction.

Neveah had chosen her direction due to the silhouette of a towering mountain she could vaguely sight from where she stood.

It was the only thing that stood out in the snow field and so Neveah assud that was where she was ant to go.

"You are too slow, let

out." Neveah’s wolf thought to her as Neveah struggled through the thick snow, her boots sinking into the snow with each step.

"Very well." Neveah replied as she let her wolf rise to the surface, her shift took over and soon, Neveah was seeing through her wolf’s eyes.

Neveah’s vision in wolf form was much sharper and the mountain which she could vaguely see had beco clearer in view.

It was also much easier for Neveah’s paws to navigate the thick snow without much hindrance.

Neveah lurched forwards in her wolf form, her paws making contact with the snow for only a brief mont before she was propelled forwards.

The chilling wind no longer felt all that cold, not with the thick layer of midnight blue fur that was Neveah’s coat.

An excited yip slipped out of Neveah as she ran even faster, handing over the reins of control to her wolf entirely.

They ran at a blinding speed, the wind in Neveah’s fur and Neveah had to admit, it had been far too long she felt this free...free to be what she truly was.

Neveah suddenly felt waking up all alone in an unknown place was not so bad after all, not if it afforded her a mont of quiet and reprieve.

"What do you suppose we shall find in the mountain?" Neveah’s wolf thought to her.

"I cannot begin to contemplate the heart of the dragon kind and their acquaintances. We can only know for certain when we arrive there." Neveah thought back to her wolf.

"How are we to know in what form the trial will be?" Neveah’s wolf thought to her again.

"This is an uncomfortable change... I am usually the one with the questions while you always have all the answers." Neveah amusedly reminded her wolf of the dynamics of their relationship.

"It would serve better if you just say you have no idea." Neveah’s wolf huffed in their mind link.

"You are in my head, you would know if I did...but then again, we would not have been sent here in our sleep if we were ant to know from the onset." Neveah reasoned.

"We were caught off guard, taken heaven knows where without our knowledge and even now, we are completely ignorant of what lies ahead of us."

"I do not know about you Veah, but this sounds like a story which we shall not like the ending to..."

"A story that began with us trusting and letting our guard down...we are not as cautious as we used to be in Dragon Keep and believe , it will not end well." Neveah’s wolf reminded her.
