While Akatsuki planned to catch the Tail beasts, the Konoha 11 set off towards their first actual missions.
Kakashi and others went to the land of waves to help Tazuna.
But unlike the original, they didn't encounter Zabuza, only so Chunin and a rebellious Jonin from Stone, hired by Gato, which Naruto and others working together dealt with.
Kurenai also took her students to kill the bandits around the small villages near Konoha to gain experience and to help them see what Ninja world truly is.
