Chapter 435: Chapter 281 Do Not Lose, Do Not Forget_2

Yuanyi whispered, “Alang… the Lady has just been brought back and hasn’t had the chance to change her clothes. Maybe you should wait in the outer room…”

The answer he received was silence.

After a long while, Chai Xuanyi finally said, “Give the clothes.”

Yuanyi gestured for the maid to hand over the clothes.

Chai Xuanyi took the clothes and said indifferently, “You all leave.”

The maids hesitated for a mont, then all turned their gazes towards Yuanyi. Yuanyi waved her hand, and everyone left quietly after leaving behind so hot water and towels.

mory was faint; apart from the events of the day, Chai Xuanyi rembered nothing else. However, it felt as though there was a hole sowhere deep within him, chillingly painful.

“Wanping.” Chai Xuanyi no longer rembered that his wife’s actual na was Li Wanshu; he only rembered the woman who smiled radiantly at him that day, the Lady who had written “never forget, never lose” on paper.

Outside the door in the corridor stood two rows of maids, against the howling wind and snow. Yuanyi, staring at the shadows reflected on the window, bit her lower lip hard, the faint taste of blood spreading in her mouth.

“What’s going on?” Suddenly, soone quietly interrupted her thoughts.

Turning around, Yuanyi realized that unknowingly, the courtyard had filled with people, led by a man in his mid-thirties, tall and thin, with features sowhat resembling Chai Xuanyi’s. It was Chai Wulang, leading the family mbers hurrying over through the snow. Yuanyi, being a servant of the Chai Family, naturally recognized him.

“I have seen Wulang.”

Yuanyi bowed in greeting but was interrupted by Chai Wulang, “No need for such formalities, tell what exactly happened!”

“The slave does not know, an hour ago, General Si personally delivered the Lady’s corpse back to the residence and said he was going to the palace imdiately to report the incident to His Majesty,” Yuanyi replied.

“General Si? Si Chengtao? Nonsense! Since when does an outsider like him interfere in the Chai Family’s affairs!” Chai Wulang glared at Yuanyi, “What was the Lady doing leaving the residence? Which maid was with her?”

Chai Wulang, who was lean but not soft-spoken, made Yuanyi’s ears buzz. After pausing for a mont, she replied, “The Lady always preferred not to be disturbed and was often alone, so no one knows when she left the residence, nor did any maid accompany her.”

“What?!” Although Chai Wulang had heard of the temper of Princess Wenxi, Yuanyi’s answer did not surprise him too much. What shocked him was the possibility that if the Chai Family was negligent, leading to the death of the sole heir of the hidden Crown Prince, it wouldn’t bode well. However, he soon thought of Si Chengtao, who had recently been assisting the Ministry of Criminal Justice with a case—the very attack on Chai Xuanyi might be linked.

Thinking this, Chai Wulang imdiately ordered those around him, “Return to our family house imdiately, and have elder brother monitor the situation in the palace.” Having said this, he turned to Yuanyi, “What are you all doing standing around? Get inside and attend to your duties!”

Everyone froze, and Yuanyi said, “XIV Lang is personally helping the Lady to change.”

Chai Xuanyi, being the fourteenth in the family, was always referred to by his ordinal number by the family mbers, to maintain clarity, Yuanyi had to use his family rank.

Chai Wulang looked at the lights inside the house and remained silent for a long while, choosing not to disturb them.

After waiting in a side room for a mont, Chai Wulang felt it was ti and asked Yuanyi to summon Chai Xuanyi.

Hearing the door open, Chai Wulang got up and stood by the door of the side room, watching Chai Xuanyi walking through the courtyard in solitude, his figure desolate. Yuanyi followed behind holding an umbrella, but she fell quite far behind.

“Fourteenth brother.” Chai Wulang scrutinized Chai Xuanyi. Dressed in a pale blue robe with wide sleeves and his black hair loosely hanging behind, he stood alone in the snow, his expression calm yet inexplicably lonely and desolate.

Having heard from Yuanyi about the visitor’s identity, Chai Xuanyi called out according to protocol, “Brother Wu.”

“Yes, co up.” Chai Wulang responded softly, imdiately explaining why he was the only family mber present, “Uncle is seriously ill, father is sick with worry, and eldest brother has stayed ho to attend to the illness. They will co first thing tomorrow morning.”

As he spoke, he quickly thought that Chai Xuanyi wouldn’t rember this event tomorrow, making his words equivalent to not having spoken them. He cut straight to the point, “These are servants from our family house, all versed in funeral rites. They will help you make so arrangents tonight. Tomorrow, once the palace sends instructions, it will notify how the Princess is to be interred… Take care and adapt to changes.”

Chai Wulang sighed and patted Chai Xuanyi on the shoulder, swallowing the words that reached his lips.

Actually, the death of Princess Wenxi was a blessing for Chai Xuanyi, and for the Chai Family as well. When the Imperial Family had reluctantly pushed this hot potato to them, the Chais were unwilling to accept. Although Chai Xuanyi was only a son of the secondary wife, he was talented, and not without a promising future…

By marrying Princess Wenxi, the Chai Family had no choice but to distance themselves from him, allowing him to establish his own residence. Unless it was a matter of life and death, they generally had no involvent.

With the death of Princess Wenxi, as long as Chai Xuanyi could recover from his amnesia, his future was undoubtedly bright.

Chai Wulang bid farewell and left with his personal servant.

Chai Xuanyi stood still for a while, then returned dully to the hall. In just the short ti he had been gone, many white mourning flags had been hung. Several maids were changing the light crimson drapes.

Chai Xuanyi stood blankly in front of the couch, which was covered with a snow-white silk quilt. Princess Wenxi, dressed in red, actually made her pale face seem sowhat flushed, and her lips still bore a faint smile.

In this state, she appeared like a sleeping bride.

“Husband.” After standing for a long ti, Chai Xuanyi only heard a faint voice in his ears. A shy smile flashed across his mind, and then everything before his eyes went dark.

Yuanyi, who was standing by, caught a glimpse of Chai Xuanyi out of the corner of her eye and saw him swaying as if about to fall. She couldn’t help but cry out, “Alang!”

The busy servants around were so frightened that they stopped their work. Yuanyi rushed forward to catch Chai Xuanyi as he fainted. The servant at the door, hearing the noise, also rushed in, and in confusion, they carried Chai Xuanyi back to his bedroom. (
