No Way Back

The Wraith’s hull groaned as it slipped past the boundary of Architect space—a place where maps beca aningless and every star felt like it was watching.

From the command deck, Elara stared at the void beyond the viewport. "We’re in," she murmured.

Nova adjusted the trajectory manually. "Feels like flying into a mouth that forgot how to close."

Valen checked the radar. "No signals, no interference. Too quiet."

"Exactly," Damien muttered, tapping at the console. "No decay signatures, no civilian transmissions... not even radiation drift. It’s like this region of space has been sterilized."

Aeron leaned forward, eyes sharp. "It ans the Fourth Seed is close. And it doesn’t want company."

Elara swallowed. Her voice was steady, but her hands trembled. "Then we do what we ca to do. We find it before it finds us."

They didn’t speak after that.

There was nothing left to say.

Ghost Frequencies

Later, Elara sat in her quarters, rewatching a corrupted piece of Marrek Voss’s last ssage on loop. Each ti it played, a different word distorted, as if the ssage itself resisted clarity.

"You’ll understand one day," Voss had said. "We build monsters... so that we may rember how to be human."

She pressed her fingers to the screen.

Were they the monsters?

A soft knock interrupted her spiral.

Aeron stepped in. His presence filled the room like a tide. "You didn’t answer my comm."

"I needed space."

He hesitated. "We’re running out of space."

She looked up. "Or maybe we’re about to lose everything that made space feel safe."

Aeron exhaled. "When I was under the Architects’ influence... I saw things. Places that don’t exist anymore. Versions of that never made it out of their labs. But I also saw you."

Elara’s voice was hoarse. "?"

"You were always the anomaly. You didn’t just survive the design. You broke it. You made it your own."

There was longing in his voice. Regret, too.

But before either of them could close the space between them, the ship jolted.

Valen’s voice crackled over comms. "We found it. Drift Hollow."

Drift Hollow

The Wraith dropped into orbit over a planet that barely held together—a fractured husk known only to the Architects. Drift Hollow.

It wasn’t on any navigational charts.

Below them, a web of broken architecture floated above tectonic chasms and corrupted light.

Nova stared. "This is where the Fourth Seed is hiding?"

Damien’s fingers flew across the display. "No. It’s more than hiding. It’s breeding."

Data spiraled on the screen. Spore-like packets of artificial DNA were being released into the crust. A living signal.

Aeron spoke. "It’s preparing to replicate."

Elara tightened her jaw. "Then we go in now."

Beneath the Surface

The team suited up and descended.

The ruins of Drift Hollow stretched like a graveyard chiseled from tal and bone. Every corridor vibrated with the thrum of unseen machinery.

As they passed a corridor of broken statues—figures carved in eerie resemblance to Elara—Nova whispered, "They built temples. To her."

"No," Aeron said. "To the version of her that obeyed."

Valen flanked Elara’s side. "The one they didn’t get."

They reached a circular chamber. In the center stood a pulsating node—its light echoing Elara’s own energy signature.

A screen activated nearby.

Elara’s own face flickered to life—but colder, without empathy.

"Directive breach detected," the hologram intoned. "Elara-Pri has diverged. Initiate correction."

Damien backed away. "It’s not just security. It’s calling sothing."

And then the floor split open.

The Fourth Seed Awakens

It rose from the darkness—twenty feet tall, sinewed with wires, its body shifting between human and machine.

Its face was Elara’s

Its eyes were Aeron’s.

Valen stepped between it and Elara, blade drawn. "We don’t want to fight."

The Fourth Seed replied, "You do not have a choice. Assimilation ensures unity. Unity ensures survival."

Elara stepped forward. "I survived by breaking you."

The Seed tilted its head. "Deviation is not survival. Deviation is corruption."

Then it attacked.

Fractures in Flesh and Code

The battle ripped the chamber apart.

Nova flanked the Seed, blades flashing. Damien lobbed EMP pulses while dodging projectiles shaped like bone.

Aeron charged headfirst, his own neural code lighting up as it collided with the Seed’s.

He and the Seed mirrored one another in terrifying synchrony—moves copied before they were made.

Valen stayed at Elara’s side. "You’re not interfacing with that thing."

"I have to."

"It’ll kill you."

"I’d rather die myself than let them take who I am."

Their eyes locked.

And just before she moved, Valen kissed her.

A silent, desperate plea.

Aeron faltered mid-attack as he saw them—staring from across the chaos.

And for a mont, he almost died for it.

Sync

Elara made contact.

Her palm against the Seed’s exposed spine.

The interface opened like a flower blooming in reverse—neural tendrils invading her mind.

Pain.

mories that didn’t belong to her.

Whole lives simulated inside the Architects’ cold vaults.

Every version of her that failed.

Every Aeron who obeyed.

And at the heart of it all, a code spiral:

rge or perish.

But Elara didn’t rge.

She severed the link.

With one final command: I am not yours.

The Fourth Seed convulsed.

And shattered.

---

Silence

The chamber trembled.

Smoke rose.

The Seed’s body lay broken.

Damien moved to Elara. "You okay?"

She didn’t answer. Just stared at her hands like they belonged to soone else.

Valen knelt beside her. "You stopped it."

But she didn’t look at him.

She looked past him.

At Aeron.

He stood motionless, eyes storm-dark.

And when their eyes t, sothing changed.

Sothing broke.

What Cos After

Back aboard the Wraith, the team sat in silence.

They had won.

But at what cost?

Aeron hadn’t spoken since they lifted off. Not to her. Not to anyone.

Valen sat beside Elara in the d bay, his hand brushing hers.

"You don’t have to choose now," he said softly.

But the weight in her chest told her she already had.

In the Architect Cathedral

Across the stars, inside the heart of Architect territory, a signal surged.

From the core, a whisper:

Elara-Pri has broken recursion.

Initiate convergence.

Pods opened.

The Fifth Seed awoke.

And smiled.
