Edward Turner suddenly realized, covering his eyes with both hands, and his entire being fell into a state of utter desolation.

Layla Lowell handed him a glass of water: "Take your sorrow in stride. I have also lost my teacher."
Edward accepted the water and was silent for a few minutes.
Chloe Collins didn’t bother him.

Edward glanced at her and said, "It’s his latest research, and its na hasn’t been decided yet, only a code na: X-one."
"X-one?" Layla looked at Chloe: "It’s like Emma Foster’s X-four..."
"It seems you guys know about it." Edward hesitated no more, opening his heart and said, "My foster father told that back then, after the group disbanded, everyone kept in touch privately and continued with the related research. There were nine mbers in the experint group, seven of whom kept in touch, while two others did not participate: one was your mother, Joy Taylor, and the other was Albert Green."
Layla nodded: "Last ti we confird, Mr. Green said that he indeed hadn’t been invited to the gathering, nor had he kept in contact with the others."
Edward said, "That’s because they thought Joy and Albert had ulterior motives at the ti, and fearing that research secrets would be leaked, they broke off contact with them."
Chloe asked, "Who told them about this?"
"I’m not sure."
Edward continued: "Later on, six of those seven mbers each developed a new drug called X. My foster father was the first to refine X-one, and beyond that, he discovered a very special activator that, under its influence, gathers all the X drugs together. The resultant compound can effectively counteract the side effects of BDR-2 and will be the main ingredient of the antidote.
After this discovery, my foster father called everyone together for a eting, hoping to share each other’s extraction thods and synthesize the new dicine as soon as possible. But at that eting, my foster father suddenly sensed sothing was wrong and suggested to stop the eting. As a result, soone abruptly broke in and threatened them to surrender all their research results. Everyone stubbornly resisted and fled in panic.
By that ti, my foster father realized that the real traitors were not Joy and Albert, but soone hiding among them. Otherwise, the arrangent of the eting had been so careful that without an insider, it would be impossible for the news to leak."
After listening, Chloe imdiately thought of the record she saw in Alexander Foster’s basent: six years ago, on August 10th, Emma Foster went missing for half a day, and when she returned, there were scars on her arm.
Presumably, it was the injury she sustained at that eting Edward ntioned.
Layla frowned: "Who attacked them?"
