5/5Smartbookthatdoeshumorwell-whichisrare.That'sit...Uwantthelongerversion?SpoilerIlovethisseries,Ilikethecharacter.WhatItrulyappreciateaboutthisseriesandauthorthoughistheabilitytowritehumorousscenesanddeliverlaughoutloudmoments.That'srare.Mostbooksthesedaysthatevenattempthumorwilljustthroughinaquiphere,ajoke(ormemereference)there,andverylittleoriginalor'natural'.Thisauthorcreatesarealworld,putscharacterswhofeelrealintoit,andlet'stheminteractandhavefun-fromnaturalconversationsandmakingfun,tosillyinteractions,tomomentsthatcanmeanalot--whilestillbeingalittleridiculous.It'sahardlinetowritewellwithoutgoingtoofarorjust,failingtobefunny-butthisauthorreallydoesitwell.Iadmirethatandmayre-readthesebooks(seriously)justtostudythatskill.Whetheryoucareabouttheskillinvolvedornot,it'senjoyabletogoalongfortherideandmakesforafeelgoodbookandonceinawhile,youjusthavetostopandgrinsohardyourcheekshurtoractuallylaughourloud.Thecharactersaren'toverthetop(themaincharacterlikesto*act*overthetop,butisdecentlygroundedandexploredenoughthatyoudounderstandit'sanact)andtheygettohavesomeverycool"momentsofawesome"thatusuallyreallydeliver.Thisseriesisfunjustforthat,butIcan'tstressenough,there'sanoriginalsenseofhumorhereratherthanjustcopyandpastingjokesorsettingupslapstick,anybookwhichisenjoyableandagoodadventureIappreciate,butabookwhereIcanjustlaughatthefun?That'sspecial.Especiallythesedays.Therewasonejarringmomentinthisbookwherethecharacter--establishedasnewtotheworldandlostashis(early)definingtraitsbeginstohithisstrideandstartstransitioningtobeingawesome/winning,itswitchesalittlefast.That'sit-myonecomplaint.Whichisbasically...I'dhavelikedmorebookthere,halfjustbecauseI'veenjoyedtherestsomuch.Somepeoplehavewrittenthattheydislikethepolitics...wellfirst?Ididn'tthinkaboutpoliticswhilereadingthisbook,Ifeellikethattakessomeefforttotrytodo.Like,youhavetobelookingtobeoffendedalittlebittoseeaguyfightingmonstersandtravelingacrossadesertandthink"Goddamnit,thisremindsmeofacertainpoliticalparty"...Ihonestlydon'tgetthat.Themaincharacterhasopinions...yes.He'sfromashelteredworldandupbringingbeingdroppedintoanadventureworldandhavingtofacesomedifficultcontrasts/choices.Sometimeshe'swrong,sometimeshe'sright,sometimeshe'slearning...noneofitstruckmeaspolitical.He'soutspoken(that'spartofthecharacter),butIdon'tfeellikethat'smorethanawayforhimtoface(orcreatehisown)obstacles.Ifyoucan'thandleacharacterwhohasopinionsorstrongfeelingswithoutgettingoffended...well,it'sprobablygoodyou'rewarnedoff,Iguess?PersonallyIlovemilitarylovingwarbooks,peacelovingadventurebooks,booksthatexplorecompletelynewideas,booksthattakeanyideatoanewlevel...andanymixofanyofthatputtogether-that'shalfthepointofbooksforme.Istilldon'tthinkthisshouldbeamajorconcernfor*this*book,butsincethetopreviewgoesonandonaboutit...I'mputtingitoutthere.Whatdoesthisbookactuallydo?Put'saninteresting/smartprotagonistinanewworld,buildsthatworldandit'smagicinsomedetailandveryinterestingly,andsetsupaseriesthatkeepspushingthecharactertobothdealwithuncomfortablesituations--andgivesaniceridewiththrills,somefeels,andsomelaughsalongtheway.Irecommendit--strongly--it'sreallywelldone.Ilookforwardtothenextbookintheserieseagerly.
