The fire crackled low.

Beast-blood stead on the ground. Shadows stretched like claws across the stone arena. And Ryon sat with his back to the flas, every muscle tight.

Because Shaera, the Beast Queen, hadn’t stopped watching him.

Not once.

Not when he drank.

Not when he stitched his wound.

Not when he t her gaze and didn’t look away.

The Challenge Behind the Fire

"You didn’t sleep," she said at last.

"I don’t sleep where I’m prey."

Shaera smirked. "Smart. The fire isn’t just warmth. It’s a line. Those outside it? Kill or be killed."

"I’ve fought worse than beasts," he replied.

"I’m not talking about them."

She rose—slow, dangerous, catlike.

And stepped over the fire.

To his side.

Shaera knelt beside him, holding a small obsidian blade.

"Do you know why I’m called the Beast Queen?" she asked, almost softly.

"Because you’ve killed everything that tried to chain you."

Her eyes flickered.

"Wrong. It’s because I learned to like it when they tried."

Then she pressed the blade to his shoulder—just above his heart.

"I don’t share my fire. But I shared it with you."

Blood welled beneath the blade, but Ryon didn’t flinch.

He whispered, "Then take what you need."

The Wound that Binds

She pressed the edge deeper—just a cut. A ritual mark.

Then leaned forward, her lips brushing the blood, her breath hot.

"Now I’ll rember your scent in war," she said. "And if you die—I’ll hunt your killer until the sky breaks."

Ryon reached up and touched her silver-bone arm.

"I’ll do worse if anyone touches you without your permission."

Neither of them said anything for a long ti.

But as the second beast champion was dragged into the arena, Ryon stood.

Then looked back at her.

"I’ll bleed for you again," he said. "But you’ll have to bleed for too."

Shaera smiled like a lioness.

"Gladly."
