The old lady had said, last ti, that she would co over to help cook when the Su family Uncle visited.
“Okay, that works out since tomorrow’s Saturday, and I’ll be at ho resting. You go pick up Mom, and I’ll head to the Supply and Marketing Cooperative to buy so groceries. When you guys get back, we’ll both go to pick up Uncle,” Su Wanyu nodded in agreent.
Having planned everything out, the couple went off to work.
Bright and early the next day, Jiang Changhai rode his bike off to Stone Bridge Village.
Zhang Guihua was sowhat disappointed when she saw him coming alone: “Eldest, you’re off today? How co you didn’t bring Mianmian back with you?”
“Mom, I’ve co to take you to our place, my wife’s Uncle is coming over today,” Jiang Changhai explained his purpose.
“Oh, my in-laws are coming! Eldest, wait a mont, I’ll just change my clothes and then I’ll go with you,” Zhang Guihua hurried into the house to get ready upon hearing that Big Uncle Su was coming.
Jiang Changhai saw his mom rushing about and glanced at his watch, reassuring her, “Mom, there’s no rush, they won’t arrive until after ten o’clock.”
Once Zhang Guihua had changed her clothes, Zhiwen and Zhiwu, the two boys, learned that grandma was going to the city. They clung to either hand, insisting on accompanying her.
“Grandma, take us with you, we can help you out,” Zhiwen pleaded.
“Yeah, Grandma, when you co back, we can keep you company, chatter, and help you carry things,” Zhiwu added, cooing and trying to charm her.
“Alright, alright, everyone goes,” the old lady was happy to agree, seeing how attached her grandsons were to her.
However, Zhang Guihua was mistaken about the motives of brothers Zhiwen and Zhiwu. They didn’t want to go to the city because they were clinging to her but because they wanted to indulge in the delicious food at their Big Uncle’s house.
They knew that every ti their grandma went to the town, their Big Uncle Su’s wife would always prepare a lot, a lot of tasty dishes, and at dishes they could eat to their heart’s content.
Jiang Changtao had co back last ti with a face full of relish as he described the delicacies he had enjoyed at Big Uncle’s.
As for the two little burdens, Jiang Changhai didn’t say much and took his mother and nephews to town. Then he and Su Wanyu went to the train station to et Big Uncle Su’s family.
Three mbers of the Su family ca this ti—Big Uncle Su and his spouse along with their niece, Su Wanting.
When the Su family saw the house where Jiang Changhai lived, they nodded, quite satisfied internally.
While it couldn’t compare to their own house, for a rural lad who had made his way on his own, it was already pretty good.
Although Changhai had ntioned earlier that a trip to Haicheng could earn him a tidy sum of seven or eight hundred, hearing it was one thing and seeing was another. Now that they saw this kind of house, they believed his previous ‘tall tales.’
“Uncle, Auntie, cousin, don’t just stand at the doorway, please co in,” Su Wanyu, seeing them lingering at the front door, gently ushered them inside.
