Chapter 212: Chapter 9: Puppet Master

Coldly observing the handso yet arrogantly-boned Thunderhorse knight before him, another Thunderhorse knight remained silent, sitting quietly in the guest seat as if deep in thought. Kor sat upright amidst the chairs in the Conference Hall of the Lord’s Mansion, enveloped by a chilly atmosphere that lingered between them.

“I apologize, Knight Jep, but I cannot fulfill your request. The evidence you’ve provided is insufficient to prove anything. I’ve heard of the Great Mysterium Sect, but I’m not a fan of religious studies; I never have been. Therefore, I cannot believe your conclusion that the Great Mysterium Devotees are frequently appearing in the Caucasus, implying a secret proliferation in my territory. Furthermore, your demand that the Lord’s Mansion dispatch personnel to investigate and issue a notice for the public to be wary of the Great Mysterium’s invasion is even harder to accept. Hinging on your word alone, I’m asked to issue such an announcent that could undermine the stable and peaceful atmosphere of the Caucasus—I cannot do that. As for your ntion of wanting to help the Judicial Officer track the movents of these devotees, that doesn’t seem to comply with the Kingdom Law, and there’s never been such a precedent. I cannot authorize anyone other than the Judicial Officer to act. However, I will inform the Reese Judicial Officer about your concerns and ask him and his staff to be vigilant of this issue during their regular duties. Would you be satisfied with how I handle this?”

Kor tried hard to control his emotions, making his manner more akin to that of a courteous noble, but the arrogant fellow before him was truly intolerable. Had it not been for the shield provided by the Thunderhorse Knights, Kor might have even chosen to challenge him, just to rid himself of that uncomfortable feeling akin to swallowing a fly.

“I’m sorry, Lord, but I think you are overlooking the problems existing within your territory. The Great Mysterium Sect is far from as simple as you imagine; their hidden nature and the level of evil are not readily noticeable by average people. I’m puzzled by your approach. Are you truly oblivious to everything that’s happening in your territory?”

Jep had an indescribable distaste for the baron, whose eyes always seed to flicker with a mocking tone. This seemingly elegant noble was fundantally no different from Jep, steeped in mutual disdain. He could feel the hostility, though it wasn’t proof of the other party’s dark mana. Still, the subconscious enmity ant that the other party would not have a good predisposition towards the Church of Light.

“Knight Jep, I cannot agree with your perspective. If you suspect that I, as the Caucasus Lord, am derelict in my duties, you are entirely free to file a complaint with the Kingdom Star Chamber Court. However, you must be clear about one thing: I am the Lord of the Caucasus people, not the lord of any particular sect or church!” When Kor heard the other party’s sowhat uncourteous phrasing, he too beca provoked, and his tone grew firm.

“My apologies if my companion’s tone was a bit harsh. But, Sir Baron, I believe our stance does not conflict with yours; in fact, our interests should align. The Great Mysterium is indeed a very evil sect, adhering to darkness, worshipping death and paranoia. The spread of such a sect in your territory, I believe, is what neither we nor you, Sir Baron, would like to see. Even if it’s just taking precautions, we think you, Sir Baron, should take so asures.” Seeing the conversation between both parties grow heated, the other knight who had been silent could not stand by any longer, cleared his throat, and interjected.

“Green Knight, your thoughts are certainly not wrong, but as you know, the Caucasus has only recently entered a developnt phase. People from all over the Continent, particularly many immigrants whose hos have been overrun by Beastn, have found a stable environnt here where they can live quietly. It’s not appropriate to cause alarm over an unfounded suspicion of the Great Mysterium Sect, contrary to the actual situation in the Caucasus. Besides, as I’ve said before, religious matters are not the focus of the Lord’s Mansion. Religious freedom is also a principle I established early on; as long as it doesn’t violate Kingdom Law, any religion can proselytize in the Caucasus. The Church of Light can, and so can other sects. Of course, if the Great Mysterium is a sect prohibited by Kingdom Law, they are naturally excluded. I don’t want so people to disguise their self-promotion of their own doctrines under the pretense of punishing evil and promoting good.”

Kor’s insinuating and sarcastic remarks made the Green Knight’s face grow sowhat unsightly, and another knight’s expression changed abruptly.

“Baron Kor, I didn’t expect you to have such a profound misunderstanding of our Church of Light. Since you insist on your views, I think my companion and I have nothing more to say. However, I must remind you, we will report everything we find to the Holy Church Main Hall. The Kingdom of Nicosia has an agreent with our Church: any sects that promote darkness and death are subject to prohibition. We of the Church of Light have the responsibility and obligation to fulfill this duty, and the Religious Court is very interested in such matters. I hope their arrival does not displease Lord Kor.” Green Knight’s words were soft with underlying hardness and carried a blatant threat as they progressed, making Kor tense up.

“Green Knight, I can’t agree with your words. Whether I have misunderstandings about the Church of Light or not, I’m sure Priest Beran and Pastor Gustav will provide the Bishop of Tulado with a satisfactory answer, not for the two of you to decide. As to whom you need to report to, that’s not for

to know. In short, do as you see fit. Whoever cos to the Caucasus is welco, as long as they do not violate the laws of the Kingdom and the Caucasus, else I believe the Caucasus people would also disagree.”
