Evelise looked tired, but the anxiety that had marked her for years seed to have finally lifted.
"Look at those walls," she began, her voice a low, steady rumble of suppressed history. "The city built them up so high to keep the true natives of this land out. It's a cruel irony, isn't it? We are ant to be the heart of this region, yet we were forced to live outside the gates while they claid our ho." Her gaze hardened. "But I am here now. And the lives of the humanimal race change starting this day. I will make sure we get back every inch of our Motherland."
Sid just stood looking at her on the windy veranda, his gaze unwavering.
Evelise spoke again, her voice quiet, steady, and focused entirely on the servant's body Sid occupied.
"It's finished now,"she said, still looking at the darkness outside. "The public fight is over. You did your job perfectly."
Sid remained silent, but the servant's body instinctively bowed his head.
"I know everything," Evelise continued, her voice devoid of judgnt, only regret. "I know about you and my mother…
Sid felt a cold wave of sha wash over the servant's body— a guilt that was profound and absolute.
"I cannot forgive you for the dishonor you brought to my father, or the pain you caused her," Evelise admitted. "But I also need to thank you. You were always there. When I would sneak out, when I was hurt or scared, when I needed a distraction... you always covered for . You fixed the problems I created."
She finally turned, her gaze settling on the servant's face.
"I hated what you did to my family, but you were indeed the guard I should had. You watched over when I was most vulnerable."
She walked toward him slowly, her expression tender and sad. "The Nexus is secured. You are near retirent now, aren't you? Soon, you will be too old for this service."
Sid— trapped in the body felt the man's profound, silent sorrow at her words. This was her goodbye. The body Sid occupied moved entirely on its own, dropping to one knee before Evelise, bowing his head in total deference and sha.
"My Lady," the servant's body whispered, the voice thick with emotion Sid hadn't intended. "I apologize for my transgression. It was wrong. But protecting you was the greatest honor of my life. May you find peace."
Evelise knelt down, placing a gentle hand on the servant's bowed head, a final, poignant blessing.
"Rest now," she murmured. "Rest."
The contact was the final trigger. The mory dissolved completely, pulling Sid back into the void.
[Dead Chapter 3 — Cleared]
Sid awoke with a violent gasp in the cold, dark silence of the cabin. He was back on his soft mattress, his knee throbbing. He sat up, heart pounding, the mory of the servant's final, heart wrenching goodbye still vivid. The revelation— Evelise's awareness of the affair, and her complex, heartbreaking gratitude toward the man he occupied was staggering.
The screen of his consciousness flashed a brief ssage:
[SYSTEM ANNOUNCENT]
[Congratulations, Sid! You have successfully completed Evelise's third Dead Chapter]
[To unlock and view the next Dead Chapter, you must once again achieve "Night Ti" status with your companion.]
Sid awoke with a violent, choked gasp, his body slick with sweat. He was back on his rough mattress, the familiar throb in his injured knee a brutal reminder of reality. Tears, unintended and unexpected, were streaming down his face.
The emotional weight of the servant's final monts— the genuine, absolute sha of the infidelity mixed with the profound, quiet loyalty of a father figure had torn through Sid's usual detachnt. He felt the crushing sorrow of a man who loved and protected the daughter of the man he dishonored.
"That old fart..." Sid whispered hoarsely, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand. "He was a damn good guard. He kept her steady, kept her safe so she could reach the Nexus."
The revelation was staggering. Evelise knew. She had carried that secret and, in the end, given the man a final, heartbreaking absolution.
He looked at the lingering [SYSTEM ANNOUNCENT] flashing in his mind.
"I would not fail the old man's sacrifice."
He needed to see the next chapter imdiately. He needed to ensure that Harry the spoiled heir they threw at her did not exploit her hard won victory. A surge of protective fury, sharp and unwelco, went through him. Was it protection, or was it... jealousy? He pushed the thought away.
"I need Night Ti."
Sid muttered, pushing himself up, the pain in his knee montarily forgotten. He needed to make Evelise forget the trauma of the pink smoke and instead crave the connection that would unlock the next piece of her past.
"I've seen the past; now I control the present. We're going straight for Chapter Four."
Sid formulated a plan: Operation: Get Evelise Horny Before Sundown. He would spend the entire day strategically deploying his charisma, physique, and intellect to bypass her conscious anxiety and engage her primal desire.
Morning:
Evelise was already in the basent laboratory, absorbed in analyzing the residue of her latest herbal failure. Oshan stood guard by the door, her eyes fixed on the entrance, still avoiding any direct interaction following the previous night's sha.
Sid appeared at the top of the stairs, shirtless, using his current 'injury' as an excuse to stretch his arms, flexing his shoulders in the dim light.
"Morning, ladies!" Sid called out, adopting his most confident, easygoing tone. "Oshan, I'm just getting so light exercise for the knee. Would you mind handing that hamr? I need to look capable while I pretend to work."
Oshan, startled by his sudden appearance, stiffened. She picked up the heavy hamr and, instead of handing it to him, placed it ticulously on the top step, refusing to co closer.
Evelise rely glanced up, her brow furrowed in concentration. "Sid, can you keep the testosterone out of the workspace? I am dealing with highly sensitive fungal cultures here."
Fail 1. Tool Flexing Defeated by Fungus.
Lunchti:
Sid had prepared lunch: a surprisingly aromatic stew seasoned with scavenged spices. He had made sure to eat slowly, showcasing his strength and focus. He tried to engage Evelise in a stimulating debate about her work, hoping to excite her analytical side with his competence and scientific interest.
"Evelise, how's the progress coming along on that knee salve you were mixing for ?" Sid began, leaning in slightly, using his most intense gaze. "I'm just checking: we're not going to unleash another wave of pink smoke, are we? Hehe."
The joke landed with a thud. Oshan instantly paled further, her eyes darting away in rembered sha, clearly recalling the humiliation of the previous night's chemical reaction. Evelise's expression, however, hardened, her brow furrowing with sudden irritation.
"That wasn't funny, Sid," Evelise said flatly, the warmth draining from her voice. "That pink smoke was a humiliating disaster that compromised our supplies. Our focus needs to be absolute, not on cheap jokes about past failures."
Sid inwardly cursed the failed attempt to lighten the mood. The emotional atmosphere had turned to ice instantly. Seeing his intellectual path abruptly walled off, he decided to switch directly to the physical, seizing on the humiliation as motivation.
"Ah... yeah, my jokes are off today," he muttered, accepting the failure. Then, with a sudden, desperate movent, he deliberately slamd a spoonful of the piping hot stew directly onto his chest—a painful attempt to cleanse the humiliation with a different kind of shock.
"Damn it!" Sid roared, the heat a vicious sting. He stood up instantly, tearing off his shirt in a single, savage motion to reveal his defined abs and muscled chest. Driven by the need to salvage the mont, he simultaneously folded his shorts high—higher than necessary—to ensure his prominent bulge pointed like a defiant weapon directly toward Evelise's eye level. He remained standing, breathing hard, aggressively wiping the stew from his skin while feigning annoyance.
Evelise remained focused on the tactical situation, analyzing his exposed body only from a cold, purely objective perspective. Oshan, however, let out a tiny, involuntary squeak and slamd her eyes shut, her pale face instantly flushing with sha.
Fail 2. He hadn't provoked desire; he had only provoked indifference and embarrassnt.
Afternoon:
Sid decided on the direct approach. He found Evelise in the main cabin, reading through her journals. He sat down opposite her, radiating charm. He stood up, stretching dramatically, then dropped to the floor beside the coffee table.
"Just got a nasty cramp from that stew burn," he lied smoothly, "gotta work it out."
He launched imdiately into a furious set of push ups, aiming for perfect form and maximum muscle visibility. Every rep was a calculated display of endurance and raw physical power, intended solely for Evelise's peripheral vision. Evelise rely glanced over the top of her journal, then returned her focus to the delicate script, utterly unmoved.
