Chapter 542: 21 Hunter’s Legacy
The tranquility of the town ended.
As Vic walked down the street, he saw endless ruins and the corpses buried beneath, with the surviving people tidying up the debris, their faces blank.
It seed like a different world after just one night.
“It wasn’t just the Wildfire believers causing chaos in this city last night; there were also those Corpse Ghosts.” Bai Wei stood behind Vic, leisurely explaining, “While you went to find that old hunter, I also did so investigating. There are quite a few hunters in this city, and it’s precisely because of their presence that this town is sowhat more peaceful compared to other places… Of course, that’s not the only reason. It seems the Corpse Ghosts originally didn’t want to co this way, although it’s still unclear why… But now it doesn’t matter, they’ve arrived, and the hunters who protected this town have all died.”
Vic slowly clenched his fists, murmuring, “Why did it turn out this way?”
Bai Wei didn’t answer, and Vic didn’t need his response.
Because Vic knew the answer, although his mory of last night was quite vague, he still recalled what Wood said to Ryan.
“Only the light that shines into the darkness is the most dazzling.”
Was it because of this?
Was it just because of this?
After a mont of silence, Vic spoke again, “Can I go see that old hunter?”
“Hmm?” Bai Wei said, “He’s just a corpse now… Oh no, to be precise, just a few pieces of corpse blocks. Are you sure you still want to go?”
“I’m sure.”
“Then suit yourself.” Bai Wei shrugged, muttering, “It’s really strange, why are people in your world so interested in corpse blocks… Let lead the way for you.”
Vic shook his head, “No, I can sll his scent.”
So, Vic and Bai Wei went to the old hunter’s ho.
As Bai Wei said, the old hunter Ryan was now just a few charred pieces of corpse blocks, much like Ulu and Gerard before.
But when Ulu and Gerard died, Bai Wei wasn’t able to personally help with their burial; instead, he managed it for Ryan, whom he had only t once.
Although retrieving Ryan’s body wasn’t a wise decision, it could lead Vic to suspect that Bai Wei was watching nearby last night.
But what can be said?
Bai Wei truly couldn’t convince himself to leave such a hero without soone to tend to his remains, ultimately being burned with the dead Wildfire believers by the townspeople.
So he made this rather unwise decision, pondering how he would respond if Vic asked.
Fortunately, Vic didn’t ask; once inside, he rely stared blankly at the remains.
Alright, it seems I overthought it, this guy doesn’t have that much on his mind.
Vic gazed dazedly.
The tattered black hat of Ryan lay on the remains, making it seem, from afar, as if he were still alive, dozing by the fire as he had last night.
It was only upon closer inspection that he realized it was just remains.
“He died to save ,” Vic suddenly said.
“Yes,” Bai Wei nodded, “he died to save you.”
“He could have survived.”
“Yes, he could have survived.”
“Really, he had already escaped at that ti.”
“I see, at that ti he had already escaped.”
Bai Wei kept repeating Vic’s words.
This made Vic’s originally blurry mories clearer.
He recalled more things.
Ryan pulling him to flee, protecting him but suffering more attacks in return, ultimately being driven to a dead end.
Yet, at this mory, it beca vague again.
He rembered Wood saying sothing to Ryan, and Ryan responding.
But he just couldn’t rember exactly what, and even though he tried hard to recall, it only made his head hurt more.
“Priest Ulu…” Vic said softly, “they called Saint.”
“Yes, I know.”
“They said I should be one of them.”
“I see.”
“…But am I really one of them?” Vic turned to look at Bai Wei, “I can’t rember anything clearly, I don’t know anything.”
“So do you think you’re one of them?”
“I don’t know, I really want to say I’m not… but I’m the sa as them.” Vic lowered his head, looking at his hands, “I still rember; last night I beca a monster like them, fighting and battling with claws and teeth. I know all their moves, I understand their language… Doesn’t that make one of them?”
Saying this, Vic’s hands began to tremble slightly again.
“I was never a hunter from the beginning, but a Wildfire believer, I should be on their side. If I hadn’t lost my mory, then last night, I should have been one of the monsters attacking and slaughtering this small town.”
Vic’s hands trembled more and more violently.
In Bai Wei’s view, Vic’s light brown eyes were gradually turning green, with bristles growing on the back of his fair hands.
“And Mr. Ryan died to save , this monster… he died to save , this monster.”
Vic’s waist was gradually bending downwards, soon to be on all fours.
“I and they… are the sa kind of people.”
Seeing this, Bai Wei calmly said, “Then why do you fight them?”
