But in that situation, he did not have any strength to fight back and protect any of the students.

Looking at those incoming attacks, David doesn’t know what to do. But one thing you can say is that he already can feel that he is going to die.
David just closed his eyes and was ready to accept death. In this situation, there is nothing he can do to protect him or any of the students.
But before closing his eyes, he decided to stand in the way of those incoming spirit beams and other attacks. Naturally, those monsters attacked from various directions and David only decided to stand in one direction.
He just hoped at least with his sacrifice he would be able to protect soone.
