Steeling himself, Jin Jiuchi took a deep, deep breath until his chest expanded to the limit and, with every ounce of strength he could muster, hollered on top of his lungs, "STOOOP—!"
Stooop...
Stooop...
...oop...
...oop...
His roar echoed on and on across every nook and cranny of the clearing before bouncing back to him. In an instant, all heads snapped to him in shock. Even the trees abruptly ceased their movents, leaving only the swaying lanterns which produced a bunch of jarring, noisy chis.
"You..." the ancient tree was the first to recover from the shock, its dignified voice trembling in suppressed rage. "Do you have any idea what you’re doing?"
"Of course, I do!" Jin Jiuchi cleared his scratchy throat while giving a ’wait a minute’ sign. He faced the ancient tree, looking around for its eyes to no avail. In the end, he settled on glaring at its mouth and launched a passionate spiel which had just co to his mind less than ten seconds ago. "I should be the one asking, do you have any idea what you’re doing? Grandpa— yes, you! I’m talking to you! Hey, Grandpa!"
The dense leaves on the ancient tree shook as though a jolt of shock had run through it. "M–...?"
"Yes, you!" Jin Jiuchi remarked in a passionate tone, every inch of his body exuding brazen confidence and noble righteousness. "Grandpa, do you know what century it is now?" Then without giving the ancient tree a chance to respond, he continued seamlessly, "It’s the 21th century, you know. The twenty first! So why are you still using this kind of old-fashioned music? Alright, I know you guys don’t have an internet connection or mp3 players here, but can’t you at least try to improvise sohow? And before you ask who I am to suggest this, let first emphasize that it is not my intention to ruin the dancing competition tonight, but I just can’t bear it anymore! The song is so damn painful to listen to! You have to trust , okay? This is all for your— ahem, for our own good! Even if we’ve beco a ghost, we still have to keep up with the trend! Now let reveal who I am. I am a newcor who had just died recently, or in other words— I am a modern ghost!!!"
The more Jin Jiuchi talked, the more emotional he beca and his blood boiled along with his magnificent speech. Holy shit, holy shit, holy shiiit, was there anyone who wasn’t touched by him? Even he nearly shed tears from how awe-inspiring he sounded!
Too 6661! He was really too 666! A natural genius through and through!
Too bad Shen Nianzu wasn’t here to witness his mont of glory!
At this point, an empty circle had ford around Jin Jiuchi, with all the ghosts subtly keeping so distance, a mixture of fear and astonishnt reflected on their faces. This foolish new ghost who had one-sidedly claid himself as a modern ghost... dared to defy the forest elder?
It was simply too— brazen! Too gutsy!
Had his sense of fear departed along with his life?!
For the ghosts who had inhabited this forest for years, decades, or even centuries, opposing the forest elder, even to the extent of disrupting the sacred annual event, was sothing they never even dared to think of doing. Just the re notion was enough to send chills down their spine. Yet this fearless twenty-first century ghost, not only did he dare to think, he even dared to take action directly!
The audience watched with bated breath, anticipating what would have beco of Jin Jiuchi now that he had angered the powerful elder.
Similarly, the players also adopted a ’wait and see’ attitude. Although they acknowledged Jin Jiuchi’s strength, they had begun to feel a faint displeasure at the man’s holier-than-thou standpoint. So of them shook their heads with a frown, disagreeing with Jin Jiuchi’s straightforward, high-risk thod, while so felt schadenfreude, wishing to see this bigshot fall from his altar.
Regardless of their identities and the hidden thoughts in their minds, all of them collectively fell into a daze when the forest elder responded after a pregnant silence, its tone contemplative,
"What are you suggesting, then?"
Yessss! Jin Jiuchi ntally pumped his fists in midair and ran around the forest twice, howling in joy. But outwardly he maintained a solemn and stern appearance befitting of a prodigy ghost advisor. "Don’t worry, Grandpa, you can count on ! I will lead everyone toward a better future!" He thumped on his chest proudly before snapping his fingers at the nearby trees. "Alright, music— start!"
After a beat’s pause, the trees began to sway back and forth, the leaves rustling and grazing each other, complinted by the gentle chis from the lanterns. A soothing and lingering lody resounded through the forest, suffusing the air with a hint of vintage elegance.
But Jin Jiuchi was extrely disappointed, his striking features morphing into a scowl, "Did I tell you to repeat the sa mistake?! Geez, listen to closely, alright? Faster! One, two, three, four—" he clapped along with the beat.
The trees picked up their pace, the lody turning chaotic.
"Nuh-uh!" Jin Jiuchi shook his index finger, urging, "Co on, is this all you can do? Faster, keep going faster! One, two, three, four— one, two, three, four—!"
The poor trees shook even more vigorously, their branches thrashing as though caught in a violent storm. Torn leaves fluttered down like shredded confetti and so lanterns even slipped off the branches before shattering with dull thuds against the ground. What was once the relaxing song of nature beca more like rock and roll, reminiscent of demonic screeches from the depths of Hell.
Only then did a wide, satisfied grin spread across Jin Jiuchi’s face. "Yes, this is it! This is precisely what you call a modern, trendy song! Woo-hoo~~ EVERYBODY DANCE NOW!!!"
Mimicking the movents he had once seen Gu Luoxin do, Jin Jiuchi threw his arms into the air and began to hop around like an hyperactive monkey, twisting his hips left and right while bobbing his head once in a while. The sight was so absurd that it left all the ghosts montarily stunned. But they swiftly snapped out of their daze and, not wanting to be left out, awkwardly imitated Jin Jiuchi’s ’twenty-first century dance’, even adding so of their personal moves.
In an instant, the arena descended into pure chaos, teeming with hundreds of ghosts flailing and gyrating wildly as if they had contracted epilepsy.
The players, who were watching the show from the sidelines: "....."
