It was a little past eight in the evening when a wind suddenly picked up, the ergency room’s doors closed tight. Listening to the whistling wind outside, it began to rain, pitter-pattering slowly.
Nurse Lele suddenly said, “Today is the Ghost Festival, July fifteenth. I saw people burning paper money on my way to the night shift… and now it’s started to rain.”
The senior nurse Fan Xia nodded, “Don’t talk nonsense, just focus on your shift.”
The intern nurse suddenly asked, “Teacher Fan, have you ever encountered anything unclean? ”

Fan Xia shook her head, “It is normal, but the crying didn’t co from the ward!”
“The old treatnt room used to be next to our duty room, but the crying ca from the storage room next door! When I got up to go to the bathroom at night, just after waking up, I always felt like I could hear the sound of a child’s cry in my ears.”
“I was very scared at the ti, so I told my ntor about it, and she told in a hushed voice: That place wasn’t always a storage room, it used to be a treatnt room, where they did the D&C for abortions! Including during the family planning period, many parents who had a second child would be brought to the hospital for abortions… Who knows how many children died there!”

Chen Cang returned to his office and started to process the cases from today’s surgeries.
Doctors have nimble hands, as they often need to write dical records—typing rapidly—and perform surgeries, where slow hands just wouldn’t do, aning overti was a regular occurrence.
Around 1 a.m., Nurse Lele rushed in, “Doctor Chen, you need to co out quickly, there’s a peculiar patient!”
Chen Cang felt Lele’s fear as she spoke.
Chen Cang paused for a mont before getting up and stepping out.
In the hall, there sat an elderly woman, plump and with a full head of white hair.
At first glance, Chen Cang saw that the old lady was soaked to the bone, sitting on a chair shivering, her face as white as a sheet, and an expression of sheer terror spread across her face. Her eyes darted everywhere, unfocused and erratic.
The old woman must have been in her seventies or eighties but sat there restless and anxious, her hair dripping wet.
Chen Cang couldn’t help but say to Lele, “Go grab a blanket, don’t catch a cold.”
Lele nodded and quickly ran inside.
Chen Cang then walked forward and asked, “Old lady, where do you feel unwell?”
Before Chen Cang had a chance to speak, the elderly woman let out a cry and hurriedly ran away, as if severely frightened, running to the corner inside the nurse’s station, burying her head deeply between her legs, and dared not lift her head!
While crying, she pleaded in a sorrowful voice, “Please, let go, I really didn’t know!”
“I’m begging you, please let go… It wasn’t who killed you…”
As she spoke, the old lady began to choke up, and then she burst into loud sobbing.
Chen Cang was stunned, what was going on here?
Could it be a ntal illness?
Thinking this, Chen Cang couldn’t help but swallow his saliva.
At that mont, a man and a woman ran in through the rain, “Mom! Mom, where are you?”
Seeing this, Chen Cang quickly walked out, “Is that your mother?”
The girl nodded, sowhat scared, and when she spoke, she lacked confidence, “Yes, doctor… is my mom possessed by sothing evil?”
The man wiped the rain off his face, both of their clothes completely soaked; it seed they had chased all the way in the rain.
Seeing their mother curled up and crying in the corner, they were anxious and unsettled.
At that mont, Lele covered the old woman with a blanket, just about to speak, when the old lady’s voice suddenly beca shrill, “Don’t co near !”
This cry directly scared Lele into taking a few steps back!
The girl hurriedly apologized, “Nurse, I’m sorry, so sorry!”
Lele shook her head, “It’s okay, it’s okay.”
Chen Cang asked, “What happened to the old lady?”
The girl swallowed and suddenly said, “Doctor, let tell you, it’s like this. Tonight, my mom went out to burn paper money, and after coming ho, she started to act a bit crazy, even her speech wasn’t clear. I wondered if she was overly sad?”
“I thought that my mom couldn’t cook anymore, so I went out to buy groceries, but when I ca back, everything in the living room was a ss, chairs were askew, the sofa was covered in fruit plates, and the things from the table were scattered all over the floor. Then I heard soone crying. Following the faint crying sound, I found my mom in the living room corner, disheveled, curled up and trembling while crying. Just like she is now!”
“When she saw co back, my mom wouldn’t talk to !”
The girl continued, turning to Chen Cang, “I thought there was a burglar in the house, but there was none! Nothing was missing from the house.”
“At that mont, my mom suddenly turned to , her face full of terror, her eyes vacant, and her voice trembling as she said: Daughter, they just ca back…”
