Jessica’s POV.

I wanted to believe that Hilda wouldn’t do sothing like that, but at this point, I didn’t trust her anymore.

Thinking about Hilda’s betrayal and Sandra’s accusation really exhausted . I tried reaching Sandra but I couldn’t, perhaps, she blocked .

I didn’t see Max after that ti. Not like I was deliberately searching for him, but for so weird reasons, I was feeling restless.

Standing by the school gate, looking up at the evening sky, I wondered what more surprises the day has for . Should I confront Hilda, or pretend I knew nothing? Should I confide in Liam, or stay mute?

"Jessica!"

That was Maddie’s voice. I turned in the direction and saw her running over, almost out of breath. My brows creased, what does she want now?

"I finally found you," without waiting for to speak, she grabbed my hand and dragged away to the cab that was waiting by the road.

I didn’t throw her hand away, because I could feel her agitation and also panic. What was wrong with her?

As the cab began to move, she took a deep breath, turned to , but before she could speak, her phone vibrated. When she looked at her screen, her hands shook and her face paled. She quickly turned off her phone and locked it away inside her purse, as if to get rid of it.

But she said nothing to after that, instead, she turned to the scenery outside.

A minute passed, still she said nothing.

"Why did you co to ?" I asked and she tore her eyes from the window.

I didn’t care about why she looked scared, perhaps, she’s gotten herself in trouble and she needed so money to save her ass.

But what I was expecting didn’t co. Instead, she said these words;

"We don’t hate you, Jessica...mom, dad, ...we don’t hate you."

My brows creased, does she think I was stupid? Yes, I could be naive and too kind for my own good, but I wasn’t stupid. I give people the benefit of the doubt, I give them chances to prove wrong, no matter what they’ve done to , but that doesn’t an I’m stupid. But right now, Maddie was trying to make feel stupid.

"If you’re after so cash, I have none." I replied heartlessly.

I’ve hoped, begged, prayed for these people to change, but every ti, they stab my heart with pain and betrayal all over again.

"Mom is in the hospital," she blurted out.

My heart dinged, like a bomb was dropped on my lap. I was about to grab Maddie’s shoulders and ask her what she was talking about, but I held myself back, faking nonchalance.

"So? Why should I care?"

Maddie looked at with shock and disbelief. But didn’t accuse of anything, and turned her gaze away and remained silent.

"If you’re intending to make pay the bills, I don’t have money," with a pause, I added, "Driver, please pull over here."

The car stopped along the way and I got out. Unlike Maddie to let leave without causing a scene. I watched the car drive off, my fists clenched and my heart raced with trepidation.

Even though these people had treated with heartlessness for all those years, I didn’t have the heart to leave them in their worst.

Stopping another cab, I told the driver to follow Maddie. I wanted to know which hospital she was headed to, then I’d pay the hospital bills anonymously. After all, I can’t let that woman die until I know which orphanage she took from.

I only heard from them that I was adopted from a rundown orphanage, but they never told which orphanage.

My phone’s ringtone suddenly interrupted my thoughts. Glancing down, it was Liam calling.

Answering the call, he asked my whereabouts, because he was in my school to pick up. I told him what happened, we talked a bit more, and he asked to move into the new house. He would drop by at the hospital to bring Kristen ho.

Kristen...

I didn’t have the ti to think about his situation before the cab pulled to a stop, but not at a hospital. It was at Hilda’s workplace. I got down and followed, thinking she wanted to drown herself with coffee, suddenly, I rembered Maddie despised coffee.

Could she be here to implore Hilda to beg ?

It was possible, considering that Hilda was my best friend, but as I moved closer to the entrance, from the see through glass walls of the place, I saw Maddie drop to her knees, begging Hilda.

Hilda, on the other hand, just stood there with a malicious smile on her face.

My brows creased. What was going on?

While I was still wondering, Hilda grabbed a cup of coffee and slowly poured the content on Maddie’s fingers.

Maddie scread. Although her voice was silenced by the glass walls, and I couldn’t hear what they were saying, I felt that sothing terrible was going on.

Perhaps, Hilda was treating Maddie like that because she knew what they did to , but then, Hilda herself has done worse to recently, so this might not be about .

I was tempted to go in. Even though I was mad at Maddie and my adopted mother, I couldn’t stand the thought of seeing them hurting.

However, I stayed back and didn’t enter. I should test Hilda again to see if she would lie about this. With this thought, I turned and left.

Arriving at Hilda’s place, it suddenly felt strange to . The energy in here didn’t feel right anymore. A person who could pay strangers to hurt , could also kill .

Packing my bags, I left her apartnt to the one Liam bought for us.

It was a condominium, situated in a quiet but most protected area in the city. The good thing about this place was that it wasn’t far from the university.

But my problem was, this place could only be gotten by wealthy people. Liam and Kristen are very wealthy people, and their faces were all over the internet. Surely, this would create a ss in their lives...and mine.

’Two enemies living together with a woman, in the sa house...?’ doesn’t that sound weird and fishy?

Perhaps, Liam has a reason, and also, he might have a way to solve this ss.

Walking around to find my room, I realized the house had five large rooms. Why five?
