The doctor explained the risks of the surgery. "It can easily lead to liver failure and hepatic encephalopathy post-operation."
A fifty percent probability, at that, Luna Axton silently added.
The doctor was accustod to the silence and confusion of patients’ families. "Think it over and give an answer before six p.m."
"Okay," Luna Axton replied chanically. A few seconds later, she managed to find her voice again. "How much will it cost?"
Her mom’s condition was improving, she was on better dication, and now, she needed surgery. They must have racked up a significant amount in dical bills again.
She didn’t have a part-ti job. She wonders if she has enough money on hand? If it’s not enough, she’ll have to ask Blaze Fairchild.
She had never asked anyone for money in her entire life. Just thinking about it now made her feel embarrassed and ashad.
But what choice does she have?
In her current situation, besides asking Blaze Fairchild for money, she had no other options.
"This morning, I saw that five million was just paid. The fees are not a problem."
"Five million!" Luna Axton was astonished.
"You didn’t know about this?"
"I do now," she said. She knew exactly who paid for it. "I just didn’t expect it to be so much."
"I’m Dr. Wyatt. If you have any questions, feel free to find . If you can’t, just have a nurse give a call."
Luna Axton frowned. Her mother had been hospitalized for almost a year, and this was the first ti a doctor had spoken to her so politely.
Most of the ti before, Dr. Wyatt would dismiss her with just a word or two in the hallway or by the hospital bed. All her knowledge about cryptogenic cirrhosis ca from her own research in textbooks and papers.
She had even been the one to proactively approach this very doctor to discuss treatnt plans. But he wouldn’t even give her a minute before cutting her off. "I’m the doctor, I’m more of a professional than you are. If you’re not willing to listen to , you can transfer to another hospital."
A sense of sorrow welled up in Luna Axton’s heart.
A healer should have a benevolent heart, but Dr. Wyatt clearly doesn’t.
Her mom’s treatnt plan was no longer one-size-fits-all. People were now holding etings to discuss it, taking her mother’s illness seriously. Even the doctor before her had beco more responsible.
Blaze Fairchild must have put in a word behind the scenes.
Sotis, you had to admit that society’s resources weren’t distributed or shared equally.
Luna Axton didn’t bring these emotions into the hospital room. Even though it was only the second day of the revised treatnt plan, her mother’s skin was noticeably less jaundiced than before.
Jenna Axton heard the door open. Seeing it was her daughter, a smile imdiately blossod on her face. "Sweetheart."
"Mom, what book are you reading?"
Jenna Axton closed the book and showed the cover to her daughter. "It’s The Complete Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth. I had one of the young night-shift nurses find it for ."
The little bit of unhappiness in Luna Axton’s heart vanished in that instant.
Her mother was no longer staring blankly out the window, bereft of hope, like she used to.
Luna Axton placed a hand on her flat stomach. She had always been thin, so when her belly had gotten a little bigger before, she thought she’d just gained so weight. She never imagined it was actually a precious little bundle.
Oh, little baby, you’re truly my Lucky Star. Ever since you ca along, everything in my life has started looking up. From now on, I’ll call you Lucky. Okay?
Luna Axton happily shared parts of her conversation with the doctor, relaying the good news to her mother.
"So, Mom, let’s both do our best. I’ll still need you to teach how to take care of the little one."
Luna Axton rested her head on Jenna Axton’s arm affectionately. Jenna, a doting smile on her face, ruffled her daughter’s short hair. "Of course, of course. Ms. Axton is already preparing her lessons."
"Ms. Axton will definitely be the most elegant grandma, a perfect combination of knowledge and theory."
After school, Luna Axton returned to Lakeside Manor. She took a shower and went downstairs to get a drink of water.
Mrs. Creed inford her that dinner was ready.
Luna Axton rembered coming ho at noon and seeing the lonely figure of Grandpa Fairchild writing calligraphy at his desk.
Grandpa Fairchild needs company, too.
When she had suggested they eat lunch together, neither Grandpa Fairchild nor Mrs. Creed had said anything. She decided to voice her idea. "Mrs. Creed, from now on, I’d like to eat my als with Grandpa."
Mrs. Creed, who was arranging the dishes, bead even wider upon hearing her words, the crinkles around her eyes deepening. "It’s wonderful that the Young Madam is willing to have als with the Old Master."
Mrs. Creed knew the Young Madam was a kind and sensitive person, so she couldn’t help but say a little more.
"The Young Master is getting busier and busier, and the Old Master is ho all by himself. He doesn’t have anyone to talk to and always eats alone. Now that you’re here to keep him company, the Old Master will surely be very happy."
Luna Axton didn’t understand. Rosalind Fairchild was Grandpa Fairchild’s youngest daughter, so what about his other children? And what about Blaze Fairchild’s parents?
She was curious, but she had a sense of boundaries and wouldn’t casually pry into other people’s private affairs.
.
When Julian Fairchild saw Luna Axton arrive with Mrs. Creed at the Pinehurst Estate, followed by several maids carrying trays, his lips curved into a smile. He murmured to himself, "This child is just so thoughtful. This old man’s heart is filled with joy."
Eating together might seem like a trivial thing, but for their family, ever since Susie passed away, the dining table at Fairchild Estate had never been lively.
For over twenty years, he had almost always eaten alone.
Only during the Spring Festival would Rosalind bring Miles Jacobs and his grandson, Kai, over for a al. The house was only lively that one ti a year.
But now he had Luna. In eight months, the Fairchild Family would have a new addition, and then this dining table would be full of life.
As Julian Fairchild was thinking about this, Luna Axton reached the doorway. Her tone was cheerful. "Grandpa, I want to have dinner with you."
"The honor is all mine. Co on in."
"From now on, can I eat with you, Grandpa? It’s so boring eating alone."
Julian Fairchild knew perfectly well what was going on. It wasn’t that she found eating alone boring; Luna was clearly just afraid that he would be lonely.
She was only saying that because she was soft-hearted and kind, not wanting to point out that this old man was all alone.
As expected, a granddaughter-in-law is so much more considerate than that grandson of his.
The warmth in his heart made his tone gentle as well.
"Alright. From now on, your als will be prepared here. It’s getting cold, and I’m afraid they’ll get cold on the way over."
Luna Axton replied sweetly, "Okay, Grandpa."
Keeping each other company, the two of them had a particularly happy dinner.
After dinner, Luna Axton rested for a bit before starting the prenatal health and psychology classes she had missed that morning.
She had initially been resistant to the classes. First, she felt they were a waste of ti. Second, as a dical student, she had already studied prenatal care, and psychology seed even more unnecessary. Now that her financial worries were gone, she was in a great mood.
However, Blaze Fairchild was holding up his end of the prenuptial agreent. He hadn’t just moved her mother to a VIP ward, but had also paid the dical bills and had the doctors adjust her treatnt plan.
She ought to show the sa commitnt to fulfilling the contract. At the very least, she should properly complete the tasks Blaze Fairchild had arranged for her.
As for the duration of the classes, she could control that herself.
As long as she learned quickly, she believed she could finish Dr. Miller’s course in no ti.
Luna Axton was listening intently when her concentration was broken by her vibrating phone. She frowned in annoyance. It was a call from Blaze Fairchild.
What is he calling for?
