A mont later, Wendy Reeves seed to regret her decision and quickly unsent the video.
"Is sothing wrong, Ms. Reeves?" the principal asked with a smile. "Do you know those two students?"
"No, I don’t. It just made think how wonderful it is to be young."
"Young people can’t compare to you, Ms. Reeves. You’re as beautiful as you are kind-hearted, donating money every year to help our school’s underprivileged students. This world would be a better place if there were more kind people like you."
"I’m just doing good deeds in my son’s na." Wendy Reeves put her phone away. "I hope he ets a good girl and gets married, and doesn’t get involved with any of the wrong sorts of won."
"With you to vet his choices, your son has nothing to worry about."
Wendy Reeves smiled. "Principal, let’s not go out for lunch. We can just eat in the school cafeteria."
The principal was both surprised and flattered. "Ms. Reeves, you’re so down-to-earth. If you’re sure you don’t mind, then right this way, please."
When the two of them arrived at the cafeteria, Wendy Reeves imdiately spotted Vivian Quinn and quietly sat down at a table behind her.
Shane Shaw asked between bites, "Boss, Jett Sterling is disabled. What are you getting out of this marriage?"
"I’ve told you before. I married him to solve an urgent problem I was facing."
"So it was a flash marriage, right? I’m so annoyed! If you needed to get married, you should have co to . It would have been perfect if we got married. It would’ve solved your urgent problem, and I wouldn’t have to deal with my family pressuring to get married. We’d kill two birds with one stone."
Vivian Quinn barely stopped herself from rolling her eyes. "What kind of logic is that?"
"But it’s true! It’s a marriage of convenience, anyway. You two haven’t even had a real, physical relationship, so it wouldn’t have mattered who you married."
"Don’t you ever say that again. Just eat your food."
"Alrighty."
The amount of information Wendy Reeves had just absorbed was staggering.
’So that woman married my son just to get herself out of a bind?’
’How despicable!’
’And it’s a marriage of convenience?’
’A marriage of convenience is good. It ans they can make a clean break!’
’If I don’t drive this woman out, then my na isn’t Reeves!’
...
After lunch, Vivian Quinn returned to the classroom to find that the two cleaners had already finished.
She inspected their work and paid them. Just as the cleaners were leaving, she ran right into Diana Davenport.
"Vivian Quinn, you have so nerve! You actually slacked off and hired cleaners? Didn’t I tell you to clean it yourself?"
Without a word, Vivian Quinn posted a screenshot of the paynt to the class group chat: "Our class president is as kind as she is beautiful. She was considerate of my leg injury and used class funds to hire cleaners, leaving in charge of supervising. So thoughtful of you! Rember to reimburse . @Diana Davenport"
The other students in the chat imdiately started showering Diana Davenport with praise.
Diana Davenport saw the ssage in the group chat and was rendered speechless.
’If I don’t reimburse her, I’ll be the one who loses face, won’t I?’
’This Vivian Quinn is so sly!’
Vivian Quinn held out her phone, displaying her paynt QR code. "A thousand, thanks."
Diana Davenport had no choice but to transfer the money.
Satisfied, Vivian Quinn put her phone away and left without another word.
Just as she stepped out of the school gates, Easton Rivers approached her. "Madam, Master Sterling is here to pick you up."
Vivian Quinn didn’t even realize how happy she was to hear that. She imdiately followed Easton Rivers to the car, and sure enough, she saw Jett Sterling leaning back in the rear seat, resting with his eyes closed.
"What are you doing here?" Vivian Quinn asked. "Didn’t I tell you I could get ho on my own?"
Jett Sterling slowly opened his eyes and turned to look at her. "Mom wants us to have dinner with her."
Vivian Quinn: "..."
"You an, your mom?"
"Of course."
"I’m not going." Vivian Quinn pouted. "She doesn’t like . It’ll just be an unpleasant atmosphere if we see her. Why should we put each other through that?"
"Vivian, first of all, I can promise you my mother isn’t a bad person, or I wouldn’t be taking you to see her. Second, I’ll be there, and I won’t let her bully you. We’re going today to officially clear the air. This way, she won’t get any more ideas about splitting us up, understand?"
Vivian Quinn thought about it for a mont. "It’s not that I’m afraid of a fight," she said. "With anyone else, I’d face them head-on. But your mom is different. If she picks on , I can’t fight back, since she’s your mother. But if I don’t fight back, I’ll just feel so frustrated..."
Jett Sterling was exasperated but amused. "Darling, I’ll be there. She won’t bully you. I promise, I won’t let you feel frustrated."
"Alright, then." Vivian Quinn reluctantly agreed. "I don’t want to put you in a difficult position, so I’ll try my best to be patient with her."
"Good girl." Jett Sterling kissed her on the forehead. "Don’t be afraid."
"I’m not afraid."
"Yes, of course. Mrs. Sterling is the bravest of all."
...
The two of them arrived at a high-end revolving restaurant. There were no other custors inside; the entire place had clearly been booked.
Vivian Quinn pushed Jett Sterling’s wheelchair inside. In the distance, she saw Wendy Reeves, exuding an air of elegant nobility as she sat at a table sipping tea in a smoky-grey cheongsam.
"Mom," Jett Sterling greeted her first, his tone neutral.
Vivian Quinn followed suit. "Mrs. Sterling."
Jett Sterling interjected, "Vivian, be polite."
Vivian Quinn had no choice but to correct herself. "Mom."
Wendy Reeves glanced at her. "Sit."
Vivian Quinn sat down.
A waiter brought over the nus. "Mrs. Sterling."
Wendy Reeves smiled. "I doubt she has ever been to a place this upscale. Let her order."
"Of course." The waiter handed a nu to Vivian Quinn. "Here you are, Miss."
Vivian Quinn didn’t take it.
Jett Sterling stepped in to defuse the tension. "I’ll order."
Wendy Reeves nonchalantly sipped her tea.
After Jett Sterling placed their order, the waiter quickly departed.
"Jett, I heard your condition flared up a couple of days ago and that you were in a great deal of pain. How are those doctors of yours even taking care of you? It’s simply unacceptable! I’ll arrange for so new ones for you—we’ll have both Western and traditional Chinese dicine specialists on hand. How does that sound?"
"That won’t be necessary. I’ll make my own arrangents," Jett Sterling said coolly. "Just take care of yourself and stay out of our affairs."
Wendy Reeves was clearly displeased. "I’m your mother. Is it wrong for to be concerned about you? With all this talk of ’we’ and ’our,’ are you treating your own mother like an outsider now?"
Jett Sterling turned to look at her. "I don’t dine with outsiders."
Wendy Reeves: "..."
"Alright, alright. I know you don’t like interfering too much. But son, with your poor health, and you not being by my side, how can I not worry?"
"I’m married now. Vivian will take care of ."
Wendy Reeves: "..."
Her expression turned serious. "Jett, do you know why I asked you two to dinner today?"
"I figured you had an agenda. Just say what’s on your mind."
Wendy Reeves was seething. "I just don’t get it! You could have any girl you want, so why did you have to choose her? Even if you can overlook her face and her leg, and you don’t mind her poor family background, you can’t ignore her character!"
"Jett, I consider myself a very open-minded parent. But as the matriarch of the Sterling Family, I must prevent you from welcoming this wife you’ve found into our family. You have to listen to on this."
Jett Sterling took a sip of hot tea and said calmly, "Why would you suddenly say Vivian has a bad character? It’s related to that video you sent at noon and then imdiately unsent, isn’t it? Let’s have a look."
Wendy Reeves turned to Vivian Quinn. "I’m not an unreasonable person. I’ll give you one chance. If you can confess your own mistake, I’ll consider letting you save so face."
Vivian Quinn: "...???"
"Mrs. Sterling, I’m afraid I really don’t know what mistake I’m supposed to have made. Why don’t you just say it directly?"
"So you’ll do it, but you won’t admit to it? Fine. Then don’t bla for putting this all out in the open." Wendy Reeves took out her phone and played the video.
Vivian Quinn focused on the screen. It showed her and Shane Shaw walking and talking. A mont later, Shane put his hand on her shoulder, and the two of them looked unusually close.
Vivian Quinn instinctively turned to look at the man beside her, only to see his deep, cold eyes fixed on the phone, his handso face as dark as a thundercloud.
