The doctor nodded, and understanding finally dawned on Zhao Zhe. He then recounted the incident on the highway, which left the other doctor utterly astonished. "So, he’s that kind of big shot! No wonder he has connections with the Cai family."

This remark caught Zhao Zhe’s attention. "What’s this about the Cai family being involved?"

The other doctor chuckled. "I just ca from Paigou Village. That powerhouse was on the phone with the Cai family the entire ti in the ambulance. Judging by their tone, it’s not a simple relationship. The Cai family kept insisting he be transferred to their private hospital, but he refused. Tell , how’s that for impressive?"

Zhao Zhe silently gave a thumbs-up. "Very impressive."

No wonder he didn’t accept my invitation. Zhao Zhe began to ponder sothing else. With such amazing dical skills, why would Wang Jian be a village doctor? He couldn’t wrap his head around it.

Zhao Zhe asked again, "Is Doctor Wang from Paigou Village?"

The other doctor nodded. "I believe so. When I went to pick up the patient, it was from his house."

Hearing it was his ho, Zhao Zhe’s curiosity was piqued. For doctors, a little gossip was a good way to de-stress, so he asked directly, "What happened at Doctor Wang’s ho?"

"About that... I didn’t get a clear picture." The doctor had gone straight to get the patient upon arrival, so he only caught a few words from the neighbors. "It seems a relative in Doctor Wang’s house has a problem up here," he said, tapping his head, "and attacked soone with a knife."

Zhao Zhe understood imdiately. ntal illness. That really is a troubleso matter. No matter how exceptional Wang Jian’s dical skills are, he probably has no way of dealing with it. In Chinese dicine, these kinds of problems are almost always categorized as Soul Loss Syndro... There are no clear treatnt thods; you can only leave it to fate. Even in Western dicine, the approach to ntal and psychological illnesses prioritizes supportive asures. There’s no magic bullet that can cure the condition instantly.

With this in mind, a hint of sympathy appeared in Zhao Zhe’s eyes as he looked in the direction Wang Jian had gone.

No matter how skilled a doctor is, they aren’t gods. They and their families get sick, and facing helpless situations is all too common. You can’t dwell on these things. Isn’t that why a doctor needs to be ntally tough? During busy tis in the ergency room, Zhao Zhe himself had monts where he was close to breaking down.

In the blink of an eye, Zhao Zhe was once again imrsed in the battle for his patients’ lives.

anwhile, Liang Xiu’s arrangents were impeccable, sparing Wang Jian from having to worry about a thing. From a private ward to a consultation with an orthopedic specialist, Xu Qian’s follow-up care was quickly put in place. It didn’t actually take long to get everything done. This was the kind of treatnt generally reserved for the families of dical staff or other important figures.

After such a trying day, even the most energetic person would feel exhausted. Xu Qian and Wang Jian were both tired, and with the sky outside long since dark, sleepiness began to set in for both of them.

But a glance around the ward revealed only one bed. The question of how they would sleep tonight beca a problem. Only after the doctors and nurses had left did the two of them realize the issue, and the air suddenly filled with a mix of awkwardness and a tinge of eagerness.

Wang Jian and Xu Qian exchanged glances. Each could see the desire in the other’s eyes, but it was overshadowed by embarrassnt.

Wang Jian stood by the window for a while before awkwardly rubbing his nose and saying, "I’ll go ask the nurse if we can get an extra bed."

They both wanted to sleep together, but now that the mont was here, they were holding back. It felt like their first relationship all over again, with the atmosphere at its peak.

Wang Jian’s search didn’t yield much. He only managed to borrow a folding cot that the nurse used for her own overnight shifts. If not for his handso looks and the considerate thought of not sharing a bed with his girlfriend, the nurse might not have lent out her personal cot.

That night, Xu Qian slept on the bed while Wang Jian lay on the cot beside it. He was much lower, but she was still just an arm’s reach away.

How ironic. He’d been exhausted a mont ago, but now, lying down and thinking of the person next to him, he wasn’t the least bit sleepy. He lay on his side for a long while, but sleep eluded him. He desperately wanted to ask the woman beside him if she was still awake but held back, afraid he would disturb her.

Just as his right hand was starting to go numb, he turned over, only to be t by a pair of bright, wide-open eyes.

"Still awake?" Wang Jian swallowed. Maybe she can’t sleep either. "You can’t sleep?"

"Mhm," Xu Qian humd softly. "That thing can’t be comfortable..."

"Why don’t you co up here and sleep? There’s no one else around anyway," Xu Qian said in a soft voice. "The nurses don’t know us, so no one will gossip."

Hearing this, Wang Jian dropped all pretense. He shot up from the cot so quickly that he startled Xu Qian.

"Slow down..." Her voice held a playful pout.

Wang Jian chuckled. "Hehe, I didn’t step on you, did I?"

"No." Xu Qian was lying on her side with her injured ribs facing upward. She shifted over, making just enough space for two people to lie on their sides on the single bed.

Her face flushed as she lay there. When she didn’t hear Wang Jian get into the bed, she knew he must be hesitating again. What an idiot, she cursed inwardly before speaking up. "Hold ."

Wang Jian gave a dry chuckle, lifted the blanket, and lay down. To avoid her injury, he carefully placed his hand on her waist. At his touch, he felt her body stiffen for a mont before relaxing again.

Wang Jian’s hand didn’t dare move. By unspoken agreent, they stopped talking and closed their eyes to rest.

However, as Wang Jian lay there, his breath tickled the back of her neck. The sensation was utterly devastating. She lted completely. With his warm palm resting on her waist, her mind began to wander uncontrollably. As her thoughts drifted, her body began to respond. Her lips felt dry, and she instinctively leaned back just a fraction. Then she froze, her eyes flying open. She had just bumped into sothing hard.

In truth, Wang Jian hadn’t closed his eyes at all. The scent of Xu Qian’s hair was too intoxicating. If he closed his eyes, his mind would only be filled with images of her; he might as well keep them open and look. Moonlight stread in through the window, illuminating the nape of her neck and the curve of her ear. He stared, captivated, inhaling the scent of her hair right up until the mont their bodies pressed together.

A primal flood washed over him, and all reason vanished.

"Xu Qian..." Wang Jian’s mouth was dry as he whispered, "May I touch you?"
