Fortunately, she had things to keep her busy during this period, primarily traveling back and forth between the hospital where she treated patients and Paigou Village. This helped ease the yearning in her heart.
Then ca the incident with Cai Xing and their life-or-death separation. Although it was a misunderstanding, it considerably lessened her reserve, making her long to spend ti with Wang Jian, just talking comfortably. If possible, a hug would have been even better.
However, when she reached Wang Jian’s room, it was empty. Though the lights in the living room were still on, he was long gone. With no other choice, she had to settle for second best and seek comfort from Sister Qian.
To her utter surprise, before she even reached Xu Qian’s door, she heard amorous sounds from within. The sound was very faint through the door; if the entire house hadn’t been so exceptionally quiet, she never would have noticed such a subtle noise. At first, she was skeptical, but after standing still for a mont, she confird she hadn’t misheard.
Sister-in-law... has it been too long since she’s been with a man?
Cai Qiong initially thought Xu Qian was entertaining herself, but a man’s voice soon ca through. This startled her so much that she imdiately turned and fled, tiptoeing back to her room. She was careful not to make any noise that might disturb the people inside, trusting that in their heated state, they wouldn’t notice her anyway.
Back in her room, Cai Qiong collapsed onto the bed and pulled the blanket over her head, her face burning. At first, she wondered who the man could be, but now, it seed obvious it couldn’t be anyone but Wang Jian. She recalled how, when she first arrived at the Wang family ho, she sensed his relationship with his sister-in-law wasn’t ordinary. Unexpectedly, that initial hunch had turned out to be true.
In this day and age, consensual romance was quite normal, especially for soone with Xu Qian’s past. Cai Qiong felt no disgust, more a mix of embarrassnt and utter confusion. After all, she considered herself to be into won—or at least, she thought she was. She really liked Xu Qian; with her virtuous, motherly nature, she was irresistible not just to n but even to a woman like her.
But therein lay the problem. The mont she realized the man in the room was Wang Jian, a strange feeling washed over her.
Could it be... I like n, too?
Cai Qiong threw the blanket off her head, her face a mask of astonishnt at her own thought. But once the idea surfaced, other thoughts from the past few weeks ca flooding back, all seemingly affirming this new notion. The more she pondered it, the more certain the answer beca.
As she dwelled on it, her thoughts grew increasingly chaotic. At first, her mind was filled with Xu Qian’s beautiful image, but then it shifted to the mory of Wang Jian saving her. The two images intertwined, replaying over and over until... she suddenly rembered the sounds she’d heard outside the door. Then her mind completely short-circuited. The two figures no longer alternated; they appeared together, tangled with each other.
Cai Qiong couldn’t stop envisioning various positions—ones she’d tried and ones she hadn’t—all at once.
She didn’t know when she finally fell asleep, only that she woke up to the sounds of people moving about outside. Despite having slept very soundly, she could only get out of bed with a flushed face. The mont she saw Wang Jian, she felt a wave of embarrassnt and ran off after exchanging just a few words.
Since they had to keep Cai Xing’s survival a secret from outsiders, he had to stay at the Wang family’s ho until the Cai Family released the official news. Not only that, but he couldn’t even leave the house, lest he be seen and the opportunity be wasted.
He was currently at the square table on the first floor, eating the breakfast Xu Qian had prepared. For a patient like him, recuperating properly here was a good thing.
This was Wang Jian’s first impression as he ca downstairs and saw Cai Xing’s relaxed expression. He didn’t stand on ceremony. After exchanging a smile with his sister-in-law, Xu Qian, he sat down next to Cai Xing. "If you can just rest and recover like this, it’s far better than being so boss. Living a long life is better than anything, right?"
After speaking, Wang Jian grabbed a fried dough stick, stuffed it into his mouth, and took a bowl of congee from Xu Qian’s hand.
"Hahahaha," Cai Xing laughed, nodding in agreent. "Actually, I’ve felt this way for a long ti. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have taken this chance to make it happen."
Thinking about the Cai Family’s arrangents, Wang Jian had a realization. "So, you’re planning to retire?"
"Yes," Cai Xing said, sipping his congee and explaining unhurriedly. "I’ve had the idea for a while. If not for the lack of a good opportunity these past few years, I wouldn’t have bothered holding on to such a demanding position. More than one or two people are eyeing my spot."
Sipping congee while eating fried dough sticks and side dishes, this simple life was truly comfortable. The morning sun stread through the window, bathing the area in a warm light and adding to the cozy atmosphere.
"However, this corporation is sothing I built from scratch. I’m not about to just hand it over to soone else," Cai Xing said. "The incident with the Gu Poison still isn’t over. Soone in the Cai Family is colluding with outsiders, but unfortunately, we couldn’t find them. By faking my death this ti, I estimate no one will be able to hold back.
"As for whether my death will impact the group, I can only say that while I haven’t officially stepped down, I’ve actually let Wen Ji make the decisions for years. So to outsiders, it seems like I have the final say and my death would surely shatter the Cai Corporation. But in reality, they vastly underestimate Wen Ji."
Wang Jian nodded, one of his doubts resolved. He was just a doctor and hadn’t paid attention to the Cai family’s affairs over the years. Since the father and daughter weren’t worried, there was no need for him to be, either.
"Then use this ti to get so proper rest," Wang Jian advised. "Less stress and less worry will be good for your recovery."
"Don’t worry," Cai Xing agreed. Turning, he saw Cai Qiong coming downstairs and called out, "Co and have breakfast."
"Okay," Cai Qiong responded, but she paused the mont she saw Wang Jian. She then went straight to Xu Qian to get her food.
Cai Xing caught her reaction and his eyes narrowed slightly. He had, in fact, tried to matchmake Wang Jian and Cai Qiong before. But he knew she had co out, so even though he’d arranged for her to stay at the Wang family’s place, he’d felt at ease, believing his daughter didn’t like n. Cai Xing had even harbored the thought that if Wang Jian did win her over, it would at least ’normalize’ his daughter.
Now, seeing Cai Qiong’s reaction to Wang Jian, it was impossible for Cai Xing not to have so ideas. As an experienced man, he certainly knew what that look in her eyes ant. But just as he was about to say sothing to probe, Cai Qiong’s attitude toward Xu Qian gave him pause. From his perspective, it also seed like his daughter was interested in Xu Qian.
What in the hell is this?
Cai Xing imdiately squashed his urge to investigate. He could only lant that every family has its own skeletons in the closet and that he should leave his children’s happiness to them. As soone with one foot in the grave, he was better off just enjoying a peaceful retirent.
Thinking this, his gaze toward Wang Jian changed, now tinged with a clear hint of sympathy.
This left Wang Jian stunned. What did that look an? He glanced at Cai Qiong, then back at Cai Xing.
What in the world is with this father and daughter? Wang Jian was completely baffled. Sothing had been off with both of them all morning.
The thought of sothing between him and Cai Qiong did cross his mind, but then, shouldn’t a father be angry if he saw sothing like that? Why the sympathy? Fortunately, Wang Jian knew Cai Qiong was a lesbian, so the idea was snuffed out before it could even form.
