The silence stretched between us, it was suffocating.
"Yes," he answered, turning to face the ceiling.
I felt my heart ripped out of my chest, then squeezed so tight before being chopped by a knife, afterwards it was nded back together and shoved back into my chest.
My breath hitched. It was not like I wasn’t expecting that. "And who might that be?"
’I fucking hope it is not Allison... I wish there were no one.’
"You don’t need to concern yourself with that." He murmured under his breath.
"So... you are not going to need as your breeder anymore. So are you going to send away?" My fingers tightened around the bed sheets.
’He was going to abandon too.’
The bedsheets shifted beside , and Damon turned to . "Why would I do that? You are my pet, rember."
His fingers brushed through a lock of my hair, then he began to twirl it around his fingers.
"But your Luna would not be pleased with being here... and this room would be out of my reach." My tone was distant.
His eyes squinted at , as if he were trying to read my expression. "You sound sad."
’Because I am?... Now I really regret falling for you... Why do you always stand for ... why do you always save when I am in danger? Why are you... always around ?’
"You asked what my feelings are towards you earlier?"
"And you said I’m just a pet to you." I turned my back on him.
"I don’t know what I feel towards you Ember. You are my pet... but you have a mark that matters to on you." His brows furrowed.
"So are you saying you only care for because of the mark?"
Then it occurred to , Damon always growled in hatred and anger whenever I touched him or he touched . But during that night when he helped ... he really did that because of the mark on my shoulder.
In other words, he didn’t really care about ... he did those things because of the mark. Hot tears stread down my cheeks.
My knuckles whitened from how tightly I was clenching the bedsheets.
"And besides that, I can’t love you. I’m not capable of doing that. But I can protect you."
His words were like a hot knife slicing through my heart. ’Stop Ember... this isn’t you. This isn’t you... When did you ever care about love? Just treat him like one of those guys you hang out with... pleasure yourself and live your life. That is less burdenso.’ My fingers loosened, my breath cald as I blinked away my tears.
"You don’t have to love . I mistook your protectiveness for love, If you had said that you loved that would have been awkward." I chuckled, snuggling into my pillow.
"Good. Now that we have cleared this out. We don’t need any more emotional strings attached." He said curtly.
His face hovered above mine, his chest pressing into my back. His lips brushed against my ear, sending shivers down my spine.
’Damn this.’
"I’ll let you rest today... but tomorrow I won’t be so kind."
He rested his head on the nook of my neck.
’Tsk, tsk, tsk. This is what happens when you fall for a psychopath.’
...
Morning ca with reluctance. I stared at the sky, watching the birds soar freely, and chirping happily. It made wonder what I really wanted.
But life is not always black and white. So there was no way I could soar freely and happily without a cost.
My surroundings blurred as my gaze stayed fixed on the sky, not even sparing a glance at the beauty of the adows.
"Ember!"
I turned around, my gaze softened before my lips quivered into a smile as Caroline and Lydia ran towards .
I ran towards them, we t midway in the adow, our hair dancing to the tune of the wind.
I threw myself into their arms, my eyes burning with tears.
Caroline and Lydia collided into , their arms wrapping around so tightly I could barely breathe, but I didn’t care. I held onto them like my life depended on it.
Lydia’s voice cracked against my ear. "We thought we’d never see you again."
"I thought they’d keep us locked down there forever... or have us executed," Caroline whispered, her fingers trembling as they gripped my back. "But you’re here. You’re really here."
I choked on a sob, burying my face into Caroline’s shoulder. "I’m sorry... I’m so sorry."
Lydia pulled back slightly, confusion flashing in her eyes. "Why are you apologizing?"
"Because you ended up in the dungeon... because of ." My voice broke. "You gave that cloak to help ... and they punished you for it."
Caroline shook her head fiercely, her eyes already brimming with tears. "Don’t say that. We did it because we wanted to."
"You were alone in there," Lydia said softly. "How could we not help you?"
My chest ached. They had been locked up and humiliated just for trying to protect . And yet here they were, still reaching out for , and smiling through the pain.
"You didn’t deserve that," I whispered, tears slipping down my cheeks.
Caroline cupped my face, her thumb brushing the tears away. "Neither did you."
I pulled them into a hug again. "You guys look so thin." I wailed.
Soon they joined in wailing. I thought they were going to die... I wouldn’t have known what I would have done if they had died because of .
I was thankful to whatever gods that existed in this realm for touching Damon’s heart, and getting them released.
Lydia pulled out of the hug. "You look like you haven’t been eating well." She brushed my hair away from my face.
"How could I eat well when my favourite cook is locked up. I didn’t even have a good appetite."
’Liar.’
Caroline pinched the bridge of her nose, her eyes still swollen from crying. "We can see."
But why did it sound sarcastic?
