9:30 AM.

Class A restricted library — private consultation room.

Maren was already there when I arrived.

Of course he was.

He was sitting at the room’s single table with a cup of sothing hot and a survey map I didn’t recognize. The journal I had returned through the academy’s internal post that morning was open on the table in front of him, turned to the last entry. Vel’s final page.

I sat down across from him.

"You read it twice," W. Maren said.

"Yes."

"How long did the second pass take?"

"Forty minutes."

Sothing shifted in his expression — a quality I was beginning to recognize as his version of approval, which he wore the sa way certain academics wore it: faintly, as if displaying it too openly would sohow compromise its accuracy.

"Most people read it once and co to with questions," he said. "The second pass is for confirmation, not discovery. It ans you understood it the first ti."

"I have one question," I said.

He gestured.

"The Partial Harvest. Vel docunted it but never used it." I looked at him steadily. "His journal says the reason was timing. He found the theory before he ford his core. He ford the core under pressure during an ergency and lost the shaping window. Sub-III unlocked but—"

"Without the correct core architecture, the Harvest function had insufficient mana density to activate." W. Maren’s voice was flat with the specific flatness of soone reciting a fact that still cost him sothing to say. "One charge, theoretically available. No activation threshold t." He set his cup down. "He carried the function for eleven months. He died with it unused."

A silence.

"Core formation," W. Maren said. "Intentional shaping. You’ve reached the threshold."

"Tonight," I said.

"Then there’s sothing you need to know first." He turned the survey map toward .

It was a map of the training dungeon. Not the standard student-accessible floor plan — a detailed architectural schematic. Rooms I had not seen on any official map. Passages. And in the northeast section of the second sublevel, a mark in red ink: a small chamber notated as "Chamber Seven — inscription site."

"The Nexus Foundation inscribed a technique fragnt in that chamber seventeen years ago when the academy’s training dungeon was being reinforced," W. Maren said. "It encodes the first-tier architecture of the path toward Gale Sovereignty — the S-rank mastery tradition of the wind school." He paused. "Not a single-use inscription. It activates for any wind-affinity practitioner who makes contact. But the contact must be made with mana flowing at Interdiate level or higher."

"Ethan will find it," I said imdiately. "He has wind affinity. He’s at Interdiate already. He’s going to clear the dungeon faster than anyone else in the trial — if he takes the northeast route, he’ll find Chamber Seven on his own."

"He will," W. Maren agreed. "Probably on the first day of the trial. He’s been studying the dungeon’s public floor plan and the northeast passage is the most efficient route to the trial’s deep objective."

I looked at the map.

"If I make contact with the inscription before the trial," I said slowly, "I take a partial read of the technique fragnt. Ethan still gets the inscription’s activation. He still receives the first-tier architecture. The inscription remains active — it’s not single-use."

"You would receive a fraction of what the inscription provides. Enough to seed the understanding. Not enough to build the full technique. But—" W. Maren’s finger tapped the map "—a seed grows in the right soil."

"And Ethan?"

"The inscription would activate for him at full output. Slightly diminished from what it would have been if untouched, but within the normal activation range. He would not notice the difference." He looked at . "He has the potential and the technique base to develop Gale Sovereignty. A fractional reduction in the inscription’s first activation will not change his ceiling."

The tree still has apples.

I looked at the map. At Chamber Seven. At the route from the trial’s entry point through the northeast maintenance junction.

"The junction is accessible during the trial," I said.

"I built you a route." He slid a second sheet across the table — handwritten directions from the trial access point to the junction. And beneath that, a small tallic object: a flat disc, faintly warm to the touch, engraved with a wind-mana resonance pattern I recognized from volu two of his restricted series.

"A resonance anchor," he said quietly. "Designed for Vel. For when he was ready." A pause. "He never used it. I’ve been carrying it for seventeen years."

I picked it up.

The mana in it was W. Maren’s — old, patient, structured with the precise care of soone who had spent decades thinking about how to make mana last.

"Don’t make this mistake," W. Maren said.

I put the resonance anchor in my coat pocket, next to where Vel’s journal had been the night before.

"I won’t," I said.

I stood up. So did W. Maren.

For a mont we stood on opposite sides of the table an academic who had been waiting seventeen years and a seventeen-year-old who had been in this world for a hundred and nineteen days and did not say the thing that sat in the space between us, which was: the person who was supposed to be here died. You’re the second chance.

We didn’t say it.

We didn’t need to.

"Tonight," I said again.

"Tonight," he agreed.

I walked out into the academy corridor and stood for a mont in the cold light of late autumn.

One charge. One apple. The dungeon trial in seventeen days.

I had a plan now. A real one.
