Miles looked at the elevator entrance, hesitated, and called out, "Vera?"

Vera Yves finally snapped out of her daze.

"Miles, I feel so terrible..." Jane Shea suddenly reached out and wrapped her arms around his neck. The mask on her face had been removed, and her small face and exposed skin were flushed with an abnormal redness.

Miles hesitated for a mont, then apologized to Vera, "Vera, I’ll take her to the hospital first, and I’ll explain to you later."

Vera instinctively helped to press the elevator button and stepped aside to make way. Watching him carry Jane into the elevator, Vera asked, "Do you need help calling the police?"

"No need." Miles replied without hesitation, his voice tinged with a bit of anger.

As the elevator doors slowly closed, Vera saw Jane suddenly tilt her head back and press her lips against Miles’.

Vera’s gaze tightened with pain, and she turned her eyes away.

A delayed ache spread in her chest; she believed he would avoid the kiss.

Vera numbly took a few steps forward, then rembered sothing and called Zoe Monroe again.

Zoe picked up quickly, "Vera, I’m on the top floor playing a ga. I’ll call you back after this match."

Vera collected her thoughts, sent her a ssage, took the elevator downstairs, and then took a cab back to her apartnt.

After a hot bath, Vera finally felt warm again, though her head was sowhat dizzy. She threw herself into the warm bed and slept dreamlessly through the night.

In her dreams, it seed like soone was touching her forehead, bringing a trace of coolness.

Vera groggily opened her eyes, thinking she saw Miles. She assud it was an illusion and turned over.

"Last night, I took her to the hospital, and after her agent arrived, I left." Miles’ voice carried a hint of fatigue, "Her contract termination with the agency didn’t go smoothly; her boss set her up."

"Her agent asked for my help, and I couldn’t just ignore it."

"I saw her kiss you."

"I dodged it, Vera." Miles looked at her with concern, "You have a fever. I made so porridge for you. Eat sothing and then take so fever-reducing dicine, okay?"

Vera sat up, leaning against the headboard.

Miles picked up a ceramic bowl from beside him and fed her one spoonful at a ti; Vera only managed a few bites before losing her appetite.

"Miles, did you also take care of her like this when she was sick before?"

"Vera..."

Vera gave a self-deprecating smile, "I know I shouldn’t think this way, but I can’t help it. You treated so well when we were kids. I always thought... you liked too. When you ended up with her, I was really, really upset."

"It’s my fault."

"The problem is you’re too good."

Vera sighed silently, "Miles, maybe we should..."

Miles took her hand, "Vera, can you trust ? My decision to be with you is not impulsive. I’m sure I like you."

Vera withdrew her hand and took the bowl of porridge, "I’ll drink it myself. You must not have slept well last night; get so rest and head to the law firm."

"Vera, you have a fever." Miles looked at her helplessly, "I’m your boyfriend; how could I leave you alone at a ti like this?"

Miles fed her the rest of the porridge and watched her take the dicine.

Vera dozed off again in bed for half the day, finally feeling more alive by the afternoon. When she walked out of the bedroom, she saw Miles busy in the kitchen.

Vera walked in and hugged him from behind.

Miles paused for a mont, then turned and touched her forehead, "The fever is gone. Is there anywhere else you feel uncomfortable?"

Vera shook her head, "Shall we go see a movie tonight?"

Miles nodded, "Which movie do you want to see? I’ll get the tickets."

"An animated film, any will do."

"Sorry, I didn’t know she made a cao in that film." Miles looked down at her, "I haven’t kept up with her news since we broke up."

Vera buried her head in his chest, "If one day we break up, would you also..."

Miles held her tightly and said resolutely, "Vera, we will never break up."

The two of them went out together, first dining at a restaurant near the cinema, then heading to the movie theater. Once inside the auditorium, they realized many parents had brought their children along.

Miles, as usual, selected a seat in the middle. As the two sat down, he let her rest her head on his shoulder, "Vera, if you’re not feeling well, let know at any ti, okay?"

Vera softly replied, "Mhm."

Soone walked into the theater and sat at the far back. Watching the intimately acting couple, the person’s black eyes carried a hint of anger. She is so forgiving with Miles.

Is this the difference between like and dislike?

After the movie, the two wandered the streets for a while. Vera rembered she hadn’t visited his new place before, so they changed their route to Miles’ apartnt.

"Vera, the door lock’s code is your birthday." Miles unlocked it with his fingerprint, "Now that you’re here, you might as well record your fingerprint too. That way, even if I’m not ho, you can co over."

"Miles."

Penelope Langley’s voice rang out, and Miles was sowhat surprised. He entered with Vera, "Mom, what are you doing here so late?"

Vera politely greeted, "Aunt Lana."

Penelope responded and smiled, "Is it late? Aren’t you and Vera just coming back from outside too?"

Miles looked at Vera, "Vera, have a seat; I’ll make you tea."

"I’ll do it. Aunt’s probably here to talk to you about sothing." Vera went to the kitchen, and Miles followed, "I’ll get the tea leaves for you."

Penelope remained calm. When Miles ca out of the kitchen, she led him to the balcony.

"There’s talk going around that you two are getting married before the year ends. How co I, as the mother, didn’t know about this?"

"Vera and I don’t plan to marry before the year ends. It’s probably just idle gossip spread by bored people."

"You may not plan it, but that doesn’t an others aren’t!" Penelope’s voice carried a hint of anger, "Miles, do you need to be more explicit?"

Miles looked at her incredulously, "Vera wouldn’t!"

"She might not, but that doesn’t an The Yves Family wouldn’t. They’ve done this sort of forced marriage thing before."

"Mom!"

"Are you two living together?"

Miles’ expression turned serious, "No! You shouldn’t..."

"Then why did she co ho with you so late?"

Penelope cut him off, pressing aggressively, "Isn’t it because she wants sothing to happen with you? If she ends up having a child, she secures her status! That’s how she married into The Valentine Family before!"

*Clatter!* The tray in Vera’s hand fell to the ground, breaking both the teapot and cups into pieces.
