Chapter 904: Chapter 904 The One He Loves is Back (Part 18)_1

He rembered that day when heavy rain poured down, how she, in her haste to leave, hadn’t brought an umbrella and got completely drenched.

And he at that ti? He was struggling with the sudden encounter with Anita Madris.

In fact, in that marriage, he wasn’t just outwardly bad to her. Deep down, he had never cared for her in the slightest.

Madeleine saw Howard Coleman standing stiffly on the spot with dicine in one hand and water in the other, apparently lost in thought. After a long while, Madeleine finally couldn’t help but break the silence and asked, “What’s wrong?”

It was only then, upon hearing Madeleine’s voice, that Howard snapped back to reality. He shook his head at Madeleine, and a hint of warmth flashed through his eyes. Hastily, he took the dicine, popped it in his mouth, tilted his head back, and swallowed it down with water.

After taking the antidote for alcohol, Howard tossed the water bottle into the nearby trash bin and then opened the car door.

Madeleine bent down and got in, and soon after, Howard also took his seat inside.

The driver waited until both of them were settled before starting the car.

The interior of the car was quiet; there was no conversation between Howard and Madeleine. Madeleine turned her head and, through the tightly closed car window, saw Howard’s thin reflection—and the man leaning against the seatback, eyes closed, motionless.

Because the car window was transparent, the reflection of the person inside was a bit blurry. Madeleine couldn’t see Howard’s expression clearly, but from his posture, it seed both weary and uncomfortable.

Madeleine hesitated for a long ti, but eventually, she couldn’t help but quietly turn her head to look at Howard sitting beside her.

The man with his eyes closed, as if sensing the woman turning to him, suddenly opened his eyelids at the exact mont Madeleine’s gaze reached him.

Madeleine hadn’t expected her sneak peek to be caught by Howard; she looked a bit panicked as she dropped her gaze and blurted out in her nervousness, “You drank so much alcohol, are you okay?”

Howard, stunned by Madeleine’s caring question, looked at the woman with downcast eyes for a while before responding, “I’m fine, I’ve gotten used to it.”

Indeed, he had grown accustod to it. In the beginning, when she went to Oceania, he spent his days almost soaking in alcohol.

At that ti, he thought that getting drunk would make it less painful, but who knew that drinking to drown sorrows only multiplied them. In the end, no matter how much he drank, he could never get drunk. Even when he felt terrible all over, his mind was always in the clearest state.

Madeleine, unaware of the details, didn’t understand what Howard ant by “I’ve gotten used to it.” She simply murmured an “Oh” and said no more.

The car fell quiet again until, after a long ti, Howard spoke up, “I just took so dicine for the alcohol, I’m much better now.”

After finishing, Howard paused for a mont before adding, “Thank you.”

“It’s no big deal. The one who should be saying thank you is . You blocked so much alcohol for ,” Madeleine said lightly, then began to feel uneasy. If she initiated buying him dicine for alcohol and inquired about his well-being, he wouldn’t misunderstand it as an indication that she was still hung up on him, would he?

Madeleine clenched her fingers tightly into a fist without looking at Howard. She desperately curved her lips into a smile and hastily added, “Besides, we’ve been siblings for so many years, it’s only right to help and look out for each other.”
