Yueyao returned to Ma Peng the engagent token and the marriage proposal letter that the Shen family had given them, and she also gathered up all the presents the Shen family had brought over that day.
Ma Peng felt that Yueyao must be furious, otherwise, she wouldn’t insist on returning all the gifts received that day. However, he deeply appreciated Yueyao’s actions. Since they were going to break off the engagent, they needed to hold the upper hand.

Ma Peng sneered, “Tell the person in charge of your household that I’ve co to call off the marriage.” Since they were going to break off the engagent, naturally everyone should know.
The Chief Steward was well aware of the situation in the Shen Residence and his face turned pale upon hearing this. Such a serious matter was not sothing the servants could decide, so he imdiately had soone notify Lady Mu, the head of the household.
These past days, Lady Mu had also been at her wit’s end at the Su Residence. If it weren’t for Su Yuzhen biting the bullet and refusing to marry Shen Conghao unless she beca a nun, the Su family wouldn’t have so quickly agreed to the Shen family’s terms.
Upon hearing from her subordinates that Ma Peng had co to call off the marriage, Lady Mu’s face also changed drastically, “What did you say? The Ma family has co to call off the marriage and even returned the gifts?”
In Lady Mu’s eyes, Yueyao’s marriage had to be negotiated with the Lian family, since they were the ones who could truly make decisions. She didn’t care even when Ma Chengteng expelled Shen Congwen; however, she never expected the Ma family to co and call off the marriage. Therefore, breaking off Yueyao’s engagent was out of the question.
Lady Mu imdiately instructed, “Go and ask the Old Master and the Eldest Young Master to co back quickly.” Since the visitor was a man, it wasn’t appropriate for her to greet him.
Shen Qian rushed back upon receiving the news. He had thought that the matter was almost settled, expecting at most so trouble from the Ma family, but as outsiders, they couldn’t override Lian Dongfang’s decision. He had made preparations for any disturbance from the Ma family, but what he didn’t expect was for them to not make trouble at all; instead, they ca straight to break off the engagent.
In accordance with traditional rites, Shen Qian hadn’t done anything wrong. Yueyao belonged to the Lian family, and since her parents were gone, Lian Dongfang, as her elder uncle, had every right to make decisions on Yueyao’s behalf. The most the Ma family could do was to negotiate for Yueyao’s better interest.
Having spent so much ti on the official fields, Ma Peng naturally knew how to speak properly.
Ma Peng, with a heavy expression, said, “Lord Shen, my father fainted from anger yesterday, and the doctor said it was due to extre rage, needing several days of good rest. My father was unable to co and has instructed to handle this matter.” Ma Peng handed over to Shen Qian the engagent token and Shen Conghao’s marriage proposal letter given by Yueyao.

The engagent token and the second son’s marriage proposal letter were given to by Yueyao herself.” He and his father could stand up for Yueyao and negotiate a better deal for her, but calling off the engagent involved the Lian family, so they didn’t have the sa rightful claim without Yueyao herself initiating it. Ma Peng straightforwardly stated it was Yueyao’s own decision, which could save a lot of trouble.
