Chapter 713: 299 Breaking Off the Engagent (Part 1)_3
Ma Chengteng sighed softly, “If what Yueyao has said is true, we must indeed call off this marriage. Canceling the engagent may tarnish our reputation, but it’s better than her suffering after the marriage.”
Seeing Ma Chengteng’s expression soften, Yueyao said, “Uncle, I also expressed my feelings to my cousin-in-law just now. She ntioned that calling off the engagent could tarnish my reputation. Uncle, I understand her concerns, but reputation is not more important than life. Besides, I am only fifteen now, and there is ti to find soone suitable.” Yueyao knew very well that she absolutely must not bring up her disinterest in marriage to Ma Chengteng at this ti. If Ma Chengteng learned that she didn’t want to marry at all, canceling the marriage would beco even harder.
Ma Chengteng did not agree imdiately; he had to first verify the truth of the matter. As long as he confird that what Yueyao said about Su Yuzhen and Shen Conghao being in love was true, then the marriage definitely had to be called off. However, due to the significance of this matter, he still needed to consider it thoroughly.
Seeing that Ma Chengteng had not yet agreed, Yueyao felt sowhat disappointed. She had said so much, yet her uncle remained unmoved.
Yueyao returned to Begonia Garden and found Ma Peng waiting for her there.
Ma Peng had also co to Begonia Garden because of the Shen family. In his view, at this point, the engagent simply had to be ended. The Shen family was clearly overstepping its bounds; if they were to back down now, Yueyao would not have good days ahead after marrying into the Shen family.
When Ma Peng heard that Yueyao was also considering calling off the engagent, he nodded. “Now that the Shen family dares to bully Yueyao in such a manner, it’s better to call off the engagent sooner rather than later,” he thought, yet he worried, “Yueyao, once we bring this up, there’s no going back.”
Yueyao’s attitude was very firm, “Cousin, I won’t regret it. Even if I never marry in this lifeti, I won’t regret it.”
Ma Peng, seeing Yueyao’s determination, felt reassured, “Alright, as long as you won’t regret it, I will persuade father. But from now on, absolutely don’t ntion a lifeti of not marrying. You’re only fifteen; there’s a long road ahead of you!”
Yueyao bowed deeply to Ma Peng, “Cousin, thank you.”
Ma Peng helped Yueyao up and said, “Don’t worry, I will definitely not let anyone bully you.” The Shen family’s actions were just a way to take advantage of Yueyao’s lack of support, and he was determined to make the Shen family understand that Yueyao was not soone they could bully easily.
Before Ma Chengteng had people look into the matter Yueyao ntioned, he saw his own son Ma Peng approaching. Ma Chengteng sighed and said, “The Shen family has gone too far; I also want to call off the engagent, but…” Ending the engagent was easy, but the aftermath would involve many considerations.
Ma Peng, without further words, directly said, “Father, consider this: If my uncle and aunt were here, and the Shen family made such demands, what would they do?”
Ma Chengteng was silent. Without even thinking, he knew that if his sister and brother-in-law were alive, they would definitely call off the engagent upon such demands from the Shen family.
Ma Peng continued, “Father, Yueyao insists on calling off the engagent. Yueyao has always been decisive; let’s follow her wishes! With patience, we can eventually find a suitable match for Yueyao. And even if we truly can’t, with here, no one will wrong her.”
Ma Chengteng felt his age and sotis thought that maybe he didn’t need to overthink things any longer. At this point, calling off the engagent was absolutely necessary, “Hmm, I will go to the Shen family to discuss canceling the engagent right away.”
Ma Peng shook his head and said, “Father, let handle the cancellation. You should rest well these next few days.” What Ma Peng ant was to have both Ma Chengteng and Yueyao feign illness while he handled the cancellation.
After learning Ma Peng’s plan, Xiang Wei remarked to Yueyao, “I never expected that in the end, it would be the Eldest Young Master who would stand up for you.”
Yueyao shook her head, “Uncle does care for deeply, it’s just that with his age, he worries about more things. My elder cousin is younger, with fewer concerns.”
Xiang Wei smiled lightly.
Zhuang Ruolan did not object to calling off the engagent, but she felt it was sowhat inappropriate for Ma Peng to handle it, “My husband, it would actually be most appropriate for your father to take charge.” After all, Ma Chengteng was an elder and held more authority. Ma Peng, being younger, had his hands tied in many situations.
Ma Peng had his own reasoning, “Father was upset by the matter and told to handle it.” He preferred not to let his wife know it was his own idea.
Hearing this, Zhuang Ruolan naturally did not oppose him any further, though she felt saddened, “How could such a good child as Yueyao be so unlucky?” Yueyao had first lost both parents, then encountered the heartless Eldest Aunt and Uncle, and now had to call off an arranged marriage. Zhuang Ruolan had once thought herself quite unfortunate, but compared to Yueyao, she felt as if she were living in heaven.
Ma Peng thought that canceling the engagent with the Shen family would relieve them of future worries. “Don’t worry; things will get better,” he reassured as he considered finding a family of equal stature to the Ma family in the future, ensuring he could protect Yueyao.
