Chapter 240: Chapter 240 Juicy Pork Chop and the Mysterious Woman
The sky gradually darkened as the sun set the last cloud ablaze with a blood-red glow.
It was now 7 PM, and the Holy Oak villa district, as a wealthy enclave in Opportunity City, wasn’t particularly crowded.
Most tycoons would not choose to live in this declining city, and those who had bought property here were slowly selling off their real estate for cash, transferring their funds elsewhere.
After the automotive industry downturn, the city governnt didn’t actively seek a new pillar industry but chose the most comfortable way to boost GDP: selling land to Spiritual Businesses to hold as Spirit Explosion Spaces.
Because of this, many industries had no room to develop in the city and couldn’t provide more jobs, so businesses pulled out one by one, and the city’s population was slowly dwindling.
If this city didn’t change its current state, it would sooner or later beco a wasteland full of Black Box Spaces, and by then, Opportunity City would truly be Monster City.
Without job opportunities and related infrastructure, the land prices in Opportunity City remained frighteningly high, because they were based on “Black Box prospective land” aid at Spiritual Businesses.
Chen Ke wasn’t too concerned about this because Hainerd’s words had intrigued him sowhat. If he could really settle his own issues afterward, then… buying a house in a big city like Carefree City and starting a family seed like a good choice.
Before crossing over, he was a poor, friendless wage slave, but in Opportunity City… he decided people’s fates, earned a million in three nights, had a Latin beauty who loved him, and a number of friends who were good with guns…
As a price, he could only live for one more week… He had to find a way to return to being a normal person! Even if it ant losing these abilities, Chen Ke wouldn’t mind at all.
A Glock pistol with a silencer attached would be quite long, making it difficult to conceal on his person, so Chen Ke had to first disassemble the silencer and pocket it.
This ti’s target was a white-haired man with a youthful face; he looked like a professor in the photo, if not a professor then surely a highly respectable businessman.
Chen Ke subconsciously felt he didn’t seem like a bad person, which once again triggered his intense curiosity. What exactly were these targets involved in? What were they doing?
It was still early. Intelligence indicated that the target would appear in his villa at 11 PM, so Chen Ke had nothing to do at the mont. Thus, he found a small diner on the street corner, ordered so simple food, and sat by the window.
The diner, nad “Maywell,” was a very common type in the United Federation, mainly offering steak, fried chicken, instant coffee, salads, and other affordable foods.
The restaurant was illuminated with orange-tinted lamps, and the street opposite the window was lined with rows of white villas.
The interior decor was very simple; wooden tables and chairs were neatly arranged, with seating for just two people against the wall. Red brick walls were adorned with various oil paintings.
Besides Chen Ke, there were so other diners in the restaurant who didn’t look like wealthy residents from the nearby neighborhood, but rather like average middle-class people.
He ordered pork chops, whose doneness was unclear, and a hot coffee, then pulled out his phone to pass the ti.
After taking control of many souls, it seed as if ti itself had slowed. Chen Ke’s life was now half over, but he was not in a hurry.
The juicy pork chop squirted a mouthful of at juice as his molars crushed the muscle fibers, allowing the at and juice to mix and slide down his throat into his stomach.
The frustrating thing was, no matter what Chen Ke ate, he could only chew it in his mouth; as soon as he swallowed it past his throat, there was no other sensation… as if there was a black hole inside him… That’s why Chen Ke could drink an entire crew of postal workers under the table all by himself.
If he competed in an eating contest, the championship would undoubtedly be his…
Chen Ke munched on the pork chops while browsing the news on his phone. The Newton Tis was the biggest newspaper in the United Federation, equivalent to The New York Tis in the United States before Chen Ke crossed over. As the federal capital, Newton City was a global supercity, a city of dreams and opportunities.
The headline of the Newton Tis was just as Parker had said; the authentic news was discussing the recent assaults on the union coins system by foreign syndicates. The exchange rate of the union coins had continuously declined over the past few days, depreciating rapidly.
Chen Ke didn’t understand economics and had no interest in the financial industry’s ga of money, but sowhere deep inside, he felt that sothing was happening, which might lead to consequences more terrifying than the 2008 economic crisis in the near future.
While waiting, Chen Ke suddenly rembered Parker, who was still warming himself by the fire at Fan Hede Church… Before entering the statue of the goddess, he had told Parker to stay put and not to wander off…
Chen Ke calculated in his head that he had left there a good few days ago. He wondered how Parker was doing now, even if ti stood still in Fan Hede, as a human being, one would still have a sense of ti passing.
Now, he had over forty souls in his possession. Opening a door would be more than easy for him and, moreover, the cycle at Fan Hede’s great church should have been unraveled by him, so the door could probably be pushed open…
Chen Ke made up his mind that after this assassination task was over, he would open the door and enter Fan Hede once again…
“Have you arrived yet?”
At the next table, an Asian woman was on the phone.
Chen Ke glanced over and saw a long-haired woman dressed in a brown top and black trousers. She was wearing sunglasses, and her lips were painted a commanding shade of blood red.
Chen Ke didn’t an to eavesdrop on her phone call, but the two were sitting too close, and the restaurant was especially quiet, making it difficult not to overhear.
He guessed that this woman might be so tycoon’s plaything…
“I’ll co find you after I deal with them, you’ll be very safe, professor,” the woman said, hung up the phone, secured her tip under the coffee cup, and stood up from her seat, brushing past Chen Ke’s table.
The hem of her clothing almost swiped Chen Ke’s coffee off the table, but Chen Ke quickly steadied the cup, causing so coffee to slosh out.
The woman turned around, and with her right hand, she slightly lowered her sunglasses. Brown eyes looked at Chen Ke, and she said apologetically, “Sorry.”
“No problem,” Chen Ke said.
The woman put her sunglasses back on and left the restaurant without turning her head.
“Hmm…” Chen Ke wiped the coffee off the table with a napkin and took out his cell phone to check the ti; it wasn’t even 9 o’clock.
Professor…?
Chen Ke’s eyebrows raised.
From the woman’s words, he sensed sothing fishy…
The woman said she had to deal with so people… Who was she going to handle? It sounded for sure not as simple as taking out the trash; it could get bloody.
The assassin’s intuition didn’t let Chen Ke continue to sit still. He had a feeling this woman was no simple character, and the professor she ntioned intrigued him…
“Follow her for a bit,” Chen Ke silently thought.
It wasn’t that he was curious about her intentions; he was concerned that if this woman’s professor and his target were the sa person, that could complicate things.
Although this probability wasn’t high, it wasn’t nonexistent.
Chen Ke placed his paynt under the coffee cup and also carefully followed her.
