Chapter 159: Chapter 146 The Power of the Legendary Ranger
Amberser’s goal was to create an Undead body that wouldn’t be countered by Holy Light, and Big Black and Husky were his test subjects.
Of course, you can’t conduct experints on yourself.
From the movies I watched in my previous life, every doctor or scientist who used themselves as test subjects t a bad end; either they went mad or turned into idiots. People who were once intelligent all transford into muscleheads after their experints.
At the ti, Amberser lanted, “So when you say your darkness increased tenfold, you an your muscles did?”
Once you toss away intelligence, no matter how many tis stronger your muscles beco, the outco is always bleak.
So, taking in these “predecessors'” lessons, Amberser decided not to use himself as a guinea pig until the experints yielded results.
Big Black and Husky were given this glorious yet arduous task, but Amberser wasn’t cruel enough to force them to go to the Laine Empire to die. As High-order Undead, their strength was still formidable. Even if their new bodies lacked resistance to Holy Light, they wouldn’t necessarily die to just any Paladin’s Holy Slash.
Headless Bro had charged in and out of the Paladin Legion seven tis before advancing to Legendary status, so if Big Black and Husky were lucky enough to run into a solitary Paladin, they would likely co out unscathed even after taking a Holy Slash.
There was no need for Amberser to remind them; after all, both were seasoned Adventurers and naturally had their own ways to survive.
Amberser even kindly prepared two pieces of Magic Equipnt for them, naly the Teleport Ring and the Guardian Ring. As the nas suggest, one enabled short-range long-distance teleportation, and the other could cast a Mage Shield—both could save their lives in critical monts.
Thus, Big Black and Husky accepted their mission without changing expression, then headed for the surface.
The desert was still at war, so with a bit of luck, they should be able to finish their mission and return safely soon.
After sending the two off, Amberser began another round of busyness.
First was the task of organizing the excavation of the Underground City; a Lich would never get his hands dirty with labor, so Amberser had to design a new type of Alien Skeleton specifically for the excavation.
This Skeleton, dubbed the Gravedigger, had limbs specifically designed for digging and chiseling, and when working together with Skeletons built for hauling, their efficiency would be high if they worked day and night, certainly more useful than human slaves.
In one night, Amberser produced more than two hundred Gravediggers, and the Underground City began to resonate with continuous clinking and clanking of excavation.
To Amberser, these sounds, much like the ringing of Gold Coins, were music to his ears, each strike signifying that his exploitation was highly effective. However, Katherine couldn’t stand it and had to set up a long-lasting sound barrier in her own room to block out these annoying noises.
With the excavation entrusted to the Skeletons, Amberser still couldn’t afford to relax.
Next, he had an important task to complete.
Amberser needed to master his newly acquired Legendary Power as quickly as possible.
Previously, as a pure Mage, whether it was Necromancy Spell or the School of Prophecy, all were purely for Spellcasters, but after receiving Katherine’s Selfless Share, he also gained the power of a Legendary Ranger and so abilities of the School of Transmutation.
Unfortunately, the “Selfless Share” of the Legendary Grace itself could not be shared with others, or else it could have proliferated like a virus, endlessly splitting the Legendary Power.
Katherine’s Legendary Ranger abilities included the synthesis of Ranger-specific Magic-Breaking Weapons, including arrows, short swords, and so on. Besides that, Amberser also had the agility of a Ranger and other related abilities.
Amberser had obtained the power of a Ranger but was clueless about how to use it.
Therefore, Amberser sought Katherine, hoping she could guide him in becoming a true Ranger.
When Katherine heard Amberser’s request, she looked intrigued.
“You have absolutely no knowledge of being a Ranger?” Katherine asked.
Amberser nodded, explaining, “In this life, I’ve touched a bow and arrows no more than ten tis.”
His words were no exaggeration—when Amberser was an Adventurer, he was a Mage, and the tis he had wielded a bow and arrows were few and far between, let alone sword fighting, which he knew nothing about.
The reason was simple: he feared pain.
Whether it was archery or swordsmanship, all cold weapons required extensive practice, which inevitably ca with injuries.
Amberser was the type to fuss over a paper cut for a long ti; those who practiced martial arts often suffered broken bones, so for him, Magic was a more cost-effective choice.
But now, he had beco a Lich and would not feel pain unless struck by a Holy Slash, which made it the perfect opportunity to train.
Upon hearing this, Katherine’s face lit up with excitent like a little girl who had found a new toy. In the Elf Tribe, it was impossible to find an Elf who had never handled a bow and arrows—they began practicing archery at the sa ti they learned to speak, and the Elf physique was quite different from that of humans.
“I have never taught a student before, especially not one as clueless as you. Let
think.” Katherine reminisced about her childhood, then said to Amberser, “I don’t recall my teacher ever teaching
archery. As the first lesson for a Ranger, I learned how to summon animal companions.”
Amberser said with a puzzled look, “I rember that’s not a skill an apprentice can master. Are you sure your teacher didn’t get it wrong?”
Katherine said proudly, “It’s different, my talent is especially good.”
Amberser couldn’t find a reason to argue, even a girl who had spent years cooped up at ho had managed to beco legendary, her talent really was exceptionally good. Amberser himself didn’t know how many tis he had co close to death before becoming a legend, and he was still diocre at best.
“Don’t worry, you now have directly acquired the abilities of a Legendary Ranger, what you lack is experience, just like
at the beginning. So you can skip the basic training. If you don’t believe it, you can give it a try.”
Katherine took out an elegantly designed longbow and handed it to Amberser, then threw a dagger outside the house.
The dagger whooshed through the darkness, its distance unknown, until a ting sound indicated it probably stuck in a wall sowhere.
Katherine said, “Try to hit the dagger I just threw.”
“No way?” Amberser was a bit incredulous; the dagger had flown beyond the range of his soul perception—how was he supposed to shoot it?
“You must have heard the sound just now… uh, I don’t know if Liches have good hearing, but if you concentrate, you should be able to sense the location of the dagger. Give it a try.”
Katherine wasn’t very confident, but Amberser still tried as she suggested.
Liches don’t have ears and can’t hear sounds, but they can sense vibrations.
The world was like an overly complicated manual, describing the sound to Amberser in a complex and burdenso way.
As Amberser recalled carefully, it seed as though this description suddenly contained a lot more information that he had not noticed before.
The direction of the sound, its volu, and the subtle movent of air… These details were originally outside Amberser’s perceptive range, but now, as long as he concentrated, it felt like he could know all the relevant details.
Amberser raised the longbow, notched the arrow, and drew the bow in one fluid motion, then fired an arrow into the unseen darkness.
A tink sound was heard, and the arrow actually hit the dagger Katherine had thrown.
Amberser was a bit shocked, he really did hit the target!
Is this the power of a Legendary Ranger? No wonder they say Legendary Rangers can sterilize a fly from hundreds of ters away, it’s not an exaggeration at all.
Katherine was also very pleased and said, “See, I told you there’s no need for any basic training.”
Amberser nodded and said, “You’re right, there’s really no need to waste ti. So next, should I summon an animal companion?”
Katherine said with a very serious tone, “Exactly, I am a Ranger with a penchant for Beast Tars, and since you inherited my power, an animal companion is particularly important for you.”
“Then how should I choose an animal companion? Are there any special requirents?” Amberser humbly asked for advice, always maintaining the utmost respect for knowledge, even if the elf maiden before him was a naive and childlike shut-in.
“The only requirent is a deep mutual understanding. An animal companion doesn’t need to be very strong, Rangers can share their power with their animal companions, so even a butterfly could possess formidable combat strength if it’s my animal companion. What you really need to care about is your synergy with the animal companion, which is very important.
“When I contracted my first animal companion, it took
a whole year, mainly spent on finding the right one. So you’d better be ntally prepared, a transcendently connected animal companion isn’t so easy to co by.”
Katherine’s first animal companion was a prematurely born black panther, whose mother had been seriously injured while hunting and happened to be found by Katherine. It was Katherine who personally helped deliver it and then gained her first partner.
At that ti, the black panther was only the size of a palm and too weak to survive, but it was thanks to Katherine sharing her own strength that the tiny panther lived on and has now grown as big as an elephant. Because of their shared history, the relationship between the black panther and Katherine is the most intimate, and their coordination is the most in sync.
However, such chances are unpredictable, and Katherine could only offer guidance rather than directly solve this problem for Amberser.
“Not particularly strong, just spiritually connected… So the range of possible animal companions is quite broad, it doesn’t have to be wild beasts like lions, tigers, or bears, right?” Amberser asked.
Katherine replied, “Yes, birds, insects, fish, even Treants can be companions, and many from the Elf Tribe have chosen Treants as their contracted partners.”
Amberser imdiately thought of the rcury Avatar he had created, which was also a living being. Wouldn’t contracting with his own creation be perfect?
Amberser quickly picked up the rcury Avatar that had been bounding around everywhere since moving to the new house and asked Katherine, “Would this work? I created it.”
Amberser explained the origins of the rcury Avatar to Katherine, letting her make a judgnt.
Katherine carefully examined this peculiar creature. She had been curious about what breed the rcury Sli was, and after hearing Amberser’s explanation, she was quite astonished.
An Undead had created a new species, and a living one at that.
This was an event that could be recorded in history books. Sharing such a secret made Katherine feel trusted.
However, after hearing Amberser’s description, Katherine shook her head and said, “It’s not suitable. This little one is a child you created. If it really matched you, it should have automatically signed a contract with you when you first held it.”
