Mauve didn't leave the library until it was almost ti for the second al, and Jael ca to get her. He didn't look very pleased when he saw Louis seated next to her.

The books had been cleared away a long ti ago, and they had just spent the rest of the hours talking about random things. Mauve had read a book at so point, and Louis did too. He offered so recomndations, and she gladly welcod them. As always, his company was always appreciated.

"Jael," she cried as she got to her feet. She rushed to him and hugged him, unable to hold back her happiness.

"Soone is in a good mood," he comnted and leaned backward so he could look at her face. "Did sothing happen?"

Mauve didn't miss the glare he shot at Louis. "What?" She asked, feigning a look of horror. "Are you saying I can't be happy to see you?"

"I didn't say that," he replied and bent his head to kiss her lips. He held her around the waist as he deepened the kiss.

"I mind, you know," Louis said.

He stared nacingly at Louis without lifting his head, so that the whites under his eyes showed. "You know where the door is."

"Jael, you don't have to be an to Louis; he was just making a joke."

"I wasn't being an," Jael responded, not hiding the fact that he was annoyed that he was the one getting scolded. "I just stated a fact."

"Anyway, how was it?" She asked.

"How was what?" He asked, wondering if he had missed sothing.

"I don't know what you were up to before you ca here."

"Oh," he said. "It was okay." Suddenly, Jael jerked his head toward Louis. "Weren't you supposed to be there?" He asked.

Louis shrugged. "I am a lover, not a fighter."

"Shut the hell up. We both know you fight like a deranged psychopath."

"You're ruining my image," Louis said with a loud sigh.

"Find so other woman to impress. This one is mine," his arm around Mauve's waist tightened.

"Relax, you don't have to act like a wild beast. Besides, you should be thanking ; I am the only reason she is here right now," Louis gloated.

"I believe I have shown my thanks enough. Watch it." Jael stared daggers at him.

"Jael," Mauve called, a little shocked.

At first, she had thought it was just harmless banter, but the way Jael's eyes glowed and his fangs protruded, she could tell he was serious.

"Oh, Lord. You're all brawn and no brains. I am not trying to take her. I couldn't even if I wanted to, and truly, if you ask what she sees in you, I could not tell you."

"Louis, you're not helping matters," she turned to look at him.

"What? I should be the angry one. I can't believe he would make assumptions like that. I am guessing you had a rough day," he said and jumped out of the chair. "I will use the door after all."

Jael watched Louis leave and realized his anger was not appeased. His brain knew nothing was going on, but his feelings thought otherwise.

There was no reason to react like that, but for so maddening reason, he needed every single person to know Mauve was his, and nothing of that sort would be entertained.

Still, he knew he had gone a little overboard in the conversation with Louis, but it wasn't sothing he was going to apologize about. Surely, Louis knew exactly what he was doing, purposefully spending all that ti with Mauve. It annoyed him to no end. If it wasn't for her, Louis wouldn't be here.

"Are you okay?" She asked lightly, touching his cheeks, and he wanted to lt in her arms.

Her warm touch would always be welco. He placed his palm over her palm on his face and closed his eyes. His hand was still around her back, and he had no intention of taking it away.

"Did you have a rough ti today?" She asked, her eyes filled with concern as she looked up at him.

"Yes," he said. Nothing was going right, and he was worried it would only get worse.

When Kieran had co up with the drug, he had assud they would be rid of Palers in a short ti, but the more they hunted them, the more popped out, and Kieran feared they might build up a resistance to the drug soon enough. That was too fast; they could barely keep up now.

There was also the fact that he was thinking they were getting smart enough to hide their unconscious mates from the sunlight. Since the drug put them to sleep and Vampires could only hunt them at night, they had no choice but to leave the bodies and hope. However, this was re speculation.

"Do you want to talk about it?" She asked.

He held her gaze for a few seconds. It wasn't that he didn't want to tell her, but this was his problem to deal with. "It's Palers as always," he said.

She gasped, "Did they attack anybody again?" She asked.

He shook his head, "Not that. They have even been a bit scarce recently. However, I fear this might be the calm before the storm. If we don't figure out a way to kill them soon enough, things might get worse."

Mauve gasped and brought her hand to her lips. "I am sorry about that."

He didn't like the defeated look in her eyes, so he kissed her forehead.

"That's not for you to worry about. I am sure Kieran would co up with sothing soon enough."

"I wish there was so way I could help."

"You help," he said.

"Really?" She asked sarcastically.

"Of course. You make their Primus very happy and you keep him satiated. That's helping." He wiggled his brows.

Mauve smacked him. "Jael, be serious."

He laughed. "You have no idea how serious I am."
