Chapter 44: Ch 44: Imdiate Rejection - Part 1
’Huh... how weird. I don’t feel any extra weight on top of . Did I... wake up alone today as well?’
I opened my eyes, only to see no one else in the room. Even the black mass on the side table was asleep.
For a second day in a row, Theo was not in the room with
when I woke up. It felt liberating but also concerning.
"It is a good thing that Theo is getting more and more independent each day. There is no need for
to feel guilty or anything..."
I reminded myself, but a part of
still felt worried. And that worry must have shown on my face because even the mass of black on my table looked at
with a worried expression.
"Hey human, are you alright? You look worried about sothing. Can I help you out?"
The black mass asked and I felt suspicious of its intentions.
Fortunately, I was not in need of its services so I ignored most of its chatter and posted an inquiry in the hunter’s forum about an open space on any team participating in the hunter’s championship.
Within minutes, I began to get replies back from teams that had 4 mbers but just needed a 5th one to fill the spot.
Most of these teams were not even qualified to participate, but because the championship was an open competition, everyone wanted a shot at it, mostly to get famous and make a living that way.
Not that I cared.
But one of the teams on the list caught my attention. Mostly because of the A-ranked hunter that was heading it.
The hunter who posted his team list was Joshua Klein, an A-ranked hunter and also ranked 105. There should have been no reason for his team to have a vacancy.
But the fact that he replied to
told
a lot—he likely had a personality flaw that prevented him from being a good teammate.
Not that it mattered to . I just needed soone to carry
to the championship. Personality and other things did not matter to
much.
So I decided to reply to Joshua and et him during my lunch break.
Then I went to work and found that Theo was early to work today as well. He looked at
and imdiately looked away with a blush on his face.
I could imdiately tell that there was a story there I was better off not knowing. But I did feel a stab of irritation at being ignored like this.
So, for the first ti in a while, I decided to approach Theo instead of the other way around.
"Theo, is everything alright? You have been avoiding
for so ti now. Are you sick..."
I asked and as soon as I ca into focus, Theo went red-faced and turned his head away once more. This was getting ridiculous now.
"D-Don’t co too close. Your sll... it’s too strong. It’s making
feel weird... and I... don’t think it’s safe for you to be around ..."
Theo warned
and I almost laughed at his words.
After all, what could a powerless puppy like Theo do to an S-class hunter like ? Not that he knew much better either.
"It’s fine, right. I know you won’t do anything to . Now, would you like to—"
I did not finish speaking when I felt Theo’s strong hands grabbing my arms and holding
at a distance.
"Y-You don’t know that... Kyle, I am not as innocent as you think I am and I am not weak either. You should be more cautious around
during this ti because I... I..."
Theo’s face exploded once more as he jerked himself back and hid his face in his hands.
As hilarious as this was, it was also concerning and I was beginning to think I needed to take him to a hospital.
Theo’s sll was also stronger right now and it was beginning to make
feel dizzy and take a step forward.
"Alright, that is enough entertainnt for both of you. Kyle, Theo is likely near his rut as well, and that’s why he is this sensitive. You should give him so space."
Ben called out from behind as he watched both
and Theo make a fool out of ourselves.
His words caused Theo’s neck to redden as well and even I could feel the heat from where I was standing.
"A-Ah I see. In that case, I guess I should head to work now. G-Good luck with your rut, Theo."
I awkwardly told Theo, not knowing how else to react. This was not a situation I was trained to follow.
While I was not a shy person, I usually did not talk about private matters like these. The others around
had been private people as well who disappeared when it was ti and returned when they were done.
And because all the hunters were busy people in the past, there was no telling when one had disappeared because of a mission or a heat cycle.
"Co on, Ben. You should stop teasing Kyle and Theo about this. They are still young and at that awkward stage of their lives. I am sure they would get better with ti as well. Kyle, co with . We should get started on the preparations."
Emma assured us before she whisked
away from the situation. Ben went toward Theo to help him out with his tasks.
Soon, the café started and people began to pour in. The busy schedule helped
forget all about my awkwardness and I was able to concentrate on my task.
My lunch break arrived before I knew it and I knew that it was ti for
to head out and et Joshua not too far away from here.
"Emma, I will be stepping out now. I will be back once my break is finished. Do you need anything?"
I asked Emma and she looked back at
with a thinking face.
"Hmm, not that I can think of anything. But perhaps, get us so ice creams when you are out. The nearby shop is selling a limited flavor that I want to try."
Emma told
and I nodded before heading out. I made sure to use a potion that masked my face.
That way, even if soone were to see my face, they won’t rember it but think that it was natural reaction of their mine because I was that unremarkable.
There was a steady increase in traffic these past few days as everyone arrived early to check out the venue for the hunter’s championship.
It made walking difficult but I made it to the junction where I was supposed to et Joshua.
Sohow, I imdiately knew who Joshua was even before I took a look around. There was only one person dressed from top to bottom in fashionable clothes and with a beautiful face.
"Hey, are you Joshua—"
I had not even finished speaking when that man grabbed my arm and dragged
close to look at .
"Let
look. Tired skin and dry eyes. Dark circles are also there and it is clear your hair has never heard of conditioning. Tsk, I had a feeling you were in dire need of help, but I did not expect it to be this bad. Tsk, I cannot take you into my team as you are."
The oga hunter imdiately rejected .
