Chapter 555: Chapter 566: So It Was True

Jas Smith quickly stepped up to Uncle John, stopped, and extended his hand, wanting to shake hands with him. Normally, Uncle John should have stopped to shake hands too.

But who knew that Uncle John didn’t stop at all, he walked straight past him, completely ignoring him.

Jas Smith paused halfway through his hand gesture, unable to extend it further. He realized he misread the situation; Uncle John wasn’t headed for him at all. This was truly awkward, but no matter how embarrassed he felt, he didn’t dare say anything. Although his family had so influence, they were not on the sa level as the Smith Family. Even if he had grievances, he couldn’t express them at all. More so, he didn’t position himself correctly; why would they bother coming over to shake hands with him?

Bitterly retracting his hand, Jas Smith slowly turned around, wondering whom Uncle John was greeting.

But at a glance, his eyes almost popped out. Uncle John was shaking hands with Jas Brown, and even patting Jas Brown’s shoulder with another hand, appearing quite affectionate.

This man was the fourth son of the Yawk Family, Steven Johnson. Jas Brown had t him before, and after visiting the Yawk Family, they had had als together. Jas Brown’s performance at the Yawk Family had earned him acceptance. While they were not clear about Jas Brown’s abilities, given he could transfer lody Yoody directly from Mayor to Deputy County Chief, they couldn’t help but take him seriously.

Jas Brown smiled at this mont: “Fourth Uncle, what a coincidence to et you here.”

Steven Johnson laughed heartily: “You rascal, coming to the City Center, why didn’t you co ho for dinner?”

Jas Brown imdiately said: “I went back last night, Fourth Uncle, you weren’t at ho.”

“Is that so, a sha really, I had so matters to attend to last night.”

Watching the two chatting and laughing, Mrs. White and Mr. White didn’t feel much but thought Jas Brown’s Fourth Uncle was quite impressive.

At this mont Steven Johnson said: “Next ti you co back, make sure to call Fourth Uncle. Fourth Uncle wishes to have a good chat with you.”

“Okay, then you’re busy now Fourth Uncle, I’ll definitely call you next ti I co back.”

Steven Johnson left, but Jas Smith was stunned, not speaking for a while, realizing Jas Brown actually referred to Steven Johnson as Fourth Uncle, and Steven Johnson asked Jas Brown to go ho, aning Jas Brown was a Smith Family mber.

Jas Smith understood so about the influence of the Yawk Family. No wonder Jas Brown could speak so boldly, solving things with just a phone call, whereas earlier, he had mocked Jas Brown; wasn’t he courting trouble? If Jas Brown really held a grudge, and decided to retaliate, even his father wouldn’t be able to withstand it.

Thinking about this, sweat rolled down Jas Smith’s forehead, he imdiately approached Jas Brown, and said apologetically: “I was wrong earlier, I shouldn’t have doubted your abilities.”

Mrs. White and Mr. White were confused by this sudden change in Jas Smith’s attitude, staring blankly at him. anwhile, Emma quickly responded and said to Jas Smith: “Smith Chief, don’t stoop to the level of the young one.”

She thought Jas Smith was intentionally tornting Jas Brown, so she stepped in to smooth things over.

Jas Smith gave a bitter smile, and said: “No, Mr. Brown shouldn’t stoop to my level. I was being foolish, completely unaware of Mr. Brown’s prowess. Mr. Brown, please don’t concern yourself with soone like , it would tarnish your status.”

Of course, Jas Brown wouldn’t concern himself with soone like Jas Smith, he gave a mild smile and said: “It’s nothing.”

Jas Smith wasn’t sure what Jas Brown’s attitude was, seeing the waiter approaching, he imdiately rushed to say: “Waiter, the bill.”

After the waiter ca over to specify the amount, Jas Smith promptly pulled out his wallet to pay, alarming Mrs. White, who quickly said: “I’ll pay, I’ll pay, how can we let Smith Chief settle the bill.”

Jas Smith instead shoved the money into the waiter’s hand, urgently saying: “It’s only right, only right, dining with Mr. Brown is an honor for , how could I let you pay.” Having said that, he quickly turned to leave, having lowered his status and rushed to pay, it could count as an apology. He figured Jas Brown wouldn’t hold it against him too much, additionally, as he departed, he signaled to Michael Johnson, hoping Michael would speak on his behalf.

“Jas, this is…” Even Mrs. White, although quite shrewd, was utterly confused by now.

Michael Johnson imdiately chid in saying: “Old classmate, you’ve really taken for a ride. With your nephew-in-law having such influence, you certainly don’t need my help.”

Mrs. White turned her head in confusion towards Jas Brown, then turned back towards Michael Johnson, stamring: “Then you an… Mr. Jones’s move to the North Bureau is… real?”

Michael Johnson laughed heartily and said: “Of course it’s real, old classmate, there’s no way it could be fake. However, old classmate, you’ve really got quite a sense of humor.”

Mrs. White shook her head vigorously, still with so disbelief, then Michael Johnson said: “Old classmate, Jas Smith is also quite a good friend of mine, he’s just a bit impulsive, so don’t hold a grudge against him.”

John Brown smiled and said, “No way.”

Michael Johnson finally breathed a sigh of relief and said, “That’s good. Well, I have so things to do, so I’ll head out. Old classmate, let’s organize a class reunion in a couple of days, and you better foot the bill. Everyone is happy for your family mber, Mr. Jones.”

“Great!” Aunt Mary nodded repeatedly.

After Michael Johnson left, the four of them took a cab straight ho. Along the way, Aunt Mary and Uncle John remained silent, seemingly in a daze, unsure if they were dreaming.

Once at ho, Aunt Mary could no longer hold back. She grabbed Emma Campbell and exclaid excitedly, “Emma, are you all not joking with Aunt Mary?”

Emma Campbell said with a smile, “Aunt Mary, even if I were to joke with soone, it wouldn’t be with you.”

“Then… what about your uncle’s job?”

“Of course that’s true too. Uncle John will definitely get the job.”

Aunt Mary’s eyes imdiately welled up with tears, surprising Emma, who quickly said, “Aunt Mary, why are you crying?”

“I’m just so excited,” Aunt Mary said, wiping her tears, then facing John Brown with a mix of excitent and apology. “Jas, it’s all Aunt Mary’s fault. At that ti, I didn’t believe what you said and even kept arguing with you. Don’t hold it against Aunt Mary.”

John Brown quickly smiled and said, “Oh, Aunt Mary, co on. You’re Emma’s aunt, so you’re like my own aunt. As an elder, even if you scold or hit a bit, it’s still how it should be.”

Aunt Mary nodded repeatedly, saying several words of praise, then held Emma’s hand, excitedly saying, “Emma, you really found a good man. I’m truly happy for you and for your late mother.”

Thinking of Emma’s late mother, Emma also felt emotional and softly said, “I believe my mom would definitely support .”

“Yes, yes, absolutely. Jas is such a good kid. If your mom saw him, she’d be overjoyed.” Aware that the topic was becoming a bit sad, Aunt Mary quickly changed the subject and cheerfully said, “Today’s a day to celebrate, Mr. Jones. We didn’t get to eat much earlier, so I’ll fry up so more dishes. You and Jas should have a proper drink.”

Uncle John imdiately said, “Then hurry up. Frankly, I wasn’t in the mood to eat at the restaurant earlier. Besides, dining with Smith Chief wasn’t appetizing. It’s much more comfortable at ho.”

Emma Campbell also went over to help Aunt Mary fry so dishes, and then the four sat down once more to eat and drink.

“Jas, is this really true? I’m not questioning your word; it just feels like a dream right now. I can’t believe this is happening.” After a glass of wine, Aunt Mary was both excited and sowhat anxious as she looked at John Brown.

John Brown understood that for people like them, becoming a formal employee at the tax bureau required a lot of effort. Since they hadn’t received a call from the HR departnt yet, they naturally felt uncertain.

Just then, John Brown’s phone rang again, and it was the old man’s call. This ti, the old man didn’t babble and directly gave John Brown a number, instructing him to have Uncle John call this person to handle the job issue.

John Brown reckoned the number had already been given earlier, but fearing the old man would rattle on, he’d hung up the call early without letting the old man say everything.

John Brown told the number, and Uncle John took it down, feeling nervous. He asked hesitantly, “Should I really call it?”

John Brown laughed and said, “Of course you should call.”

Aunt Mary glared at her husband and said, “Look at you, all nervous. Hurry up and call.” However, she couldn’t help her own hands from shaking, tapping the table repeatedly without realizing it.

With a determined effort, Uncle John dialed the number.

“He…hello, I’m Richard Robinson. You are… yes, yes… that’s right… great.” Uncle John barely managed to say who he was before nodding repeatedly. No one knew what was said on the other side, which left Aunt Mary anxiously biting her nails. She hurriedly asked her husband as soon as he hung up, “How did it go?”

Uncle John took a big gulp from his wine glass and began laughing heartily, then suddenly hugged his wife tightly. Tears flowed from his eyes as he exclaid, “It’s done, I’ve really got the job!”
